I lunged at the nearest wolf and sent it tumbling into the undergrowth. Before it could recover, another crashed into me from behind. I twisted sharply and sank my teeth into its neck. It yelped and staggered away, but more wolves were already circling me from all sides.

There were too many.

One attacked again and I struck it aside, but another replaced it immediately. Claws raked across my shoulder. I hit back hard, but a third went for my throat. I ducked, yet something slammed into my side and pain exploded through me, and I fell.

Blood soaked into my fur as I tried to push myself up again. The largest wolf stepped forward and lunged at me. I reacted too late. Its claws tore into me and threw me back to the ground.

The impact stole my breath completely.

My body began to break apart as the shift took over. Bones snapped, muscles twisted, and fur receded beneath my skin as I was forced back into human form.

I screamed as the transformation finished.

Then I was on the ground, in my human form, bleeding, and exposed.

The wolves advanced slowly.

I dragged myself backward across the forest floor, but my hands kept slipping on the wet earth. One of them lowered its head, teeth bared as it prepared to strike.

Then everything changed.

Something entered the forest.

The wolves reacted instantly, shifting their attention away from me as if whatever had arrived outweighed even their hunger.

Footsteps came through the trees, and a figure stepped into view.

Even through the pain and fading vision, I recognized him immediately.

“Liam,” I whispered.

I reached out for him as the wolves closed in on me, but before he could get to me, the nearest one turned and leapt.

Its body hit the air—

And I couldn’t tell where the shadows were coming from.

Something pierced my heart, and I gasped.

---

I woke up too fast, like something had pulled me out of darkness by force.

For a few seconds I did not move. I lay still in the attic bed, staring at the wooden ceiling. My chest rose and fell unevenly, as if I had been running for a long time.

The dream was still very clear to me.

I pressed my hand to my forehead and forced myself to sit up. My skin was cold, but there was heat beneath it that made me sick to my stomach. It moved in slow waves under my ribs, as if searching for something.

“I’m fine,” I said quietly, but that was a lie.

Outside the attic window, the Croft property looked normal. Morning light, open yard, distant movement near the barn. Nothing suggested danger. Nothing except the feeling inside me that refused to settle.

I swung my legs off the bed, trying to stand, and the moment my feet touched the floor, something inside my chest reacted.

I froze.

The air in the room felt heavier suddenly, like it had changed density without warning. My heartbeat slowed for half a second, then picked up again too strongly.

A voice came from below.

Liam.

My body responded before my thoughts did. I stepped back from the window instinctively, like something had just been alerted inside me.

It spread under my skin in a way that made my fingers curl without permission. I looked down at them and saw a faint tremor. Not fear exactly. Something older than that.

The same instinct from the night I couldn't remember.

The memory flashed without warning. The dark trees, and a body hitting the ground.

My own voice breaking into something I did not recognize.

I staggered back until my shoulder hit the wall.

“No,” I whispered, but it did not sound like refusal anymore. It sounded like a warning.

From downstairs, footsteps were heard.

Then Liam’s voice again, sharper this time, as if he had noticed something wrong in the house.

My pulse jumped violently.

And that was when I let out a painful scream.

It started beneath my ribs first, like something tightening from the inside. A slow pressure that spread outward through my chest and spine. I inhaled sharply, but the air felt dry in my lungs.I grabbed the edge of the bed.

The wood creaked under my grip.

My fingers dug in harder than they should have.

“Stop,” I said, trying to control myself, but my voice sounded strained.

The heat spread faster.

My skin felt too tight, like it was no longer the right shape for what was inside it. The ringing in my ears felt horrible. It was as if someone was calling me.

But how could I answer something I could not see?

My vision blurred for a second, and when it cleared, I realized I was breathing too fast.

Then pain ripped through me.

I doubled over as heat exploded beneath my skin.

And suddenly, I wasn't entirely human anymore..

Pain tore through my spine without warning.

I gasped and dropped to my knees as something inside me pulled tight, like bone remembering a shape it was never meant to forget. My breath broke halfway out of my throat.

“No—” I tried to say, but it collapsed into something else.

My hands hit the floor.

And I felt my skin turn to fur. My skin no longer felt like it belonged to me.

The room tilted slightly as my senses sharpened in ways that made no sense. I could hear everything now. The house below. The movement outside. The wind against the walls.

The attic door creaked open, and Liam stepped inside.

His eyes widened, and neither of us moved.

I could smell his fear. I could hear his heartbeat.

And for the first time since the night my family died, the wolf inside me became completely still.

"Kaela...?"

The growl that answered him wasn't entirely mine.

  • BOUND TO MY AWAKENING    The Awakening

The nightmare was always the same, but every night it grew clearer. The smell of burning pine, the copper tang of blood in the dirt, and the deafening roar of a wolf pack closing in. And then... Liam.“Run, Kaela! Don't look back!”I woke up with a sharp gasp, my lungs burning as if I had been running for miles. The silk sheets of my bed were tangled around my legs, soaked with sweat."My lady?" a soft voice whispered from the darkness near the fireplace. The lights came on, illuminating the gentle, warm face of Elara my maid. She was a young, quiet shifter from the lower valleys whom Draven had assigned to my wing weeks ago.Elara hurried over, carrying a copper cup of cool water. "The bad dream again?""I keep seeing him, Elara," I breathed, taking the cup with shaking fingers and drinking deeply. "Liam. Every time I close my eyes, I'm back in the forest the night my pack was slaughtered. I hear his voice calling my name."Elara sat on the edge of the mattress, her soft brown eyes

Kaela's POV "Again, Kaela," Madame Vespera said, tapping her silver-topped cane against the damp flagstones. "You're grabbing for the flame. Stop trying to choke it.""I'm not choking it," I gritted out, wiping the sweat from my brow with the back of my forearm. "It's jumping.""Because you're tense," she replied sharply, her spectacles reflecting the dim torchlight of the sunken arena. "Your power isn't a blade you draw when you're angry. It's the floor beneath your feet. Stand on it."I closed my eyes and took a long, slow breath."Drop your shoulders," Vespera instructed, her tone softening just a fraction. "Feel the pulse in your chest. Now... don't push it out. Command it to stay."I exhaled. The hum beneath my ribs shifted. Instead of sparking into a jagged flame, a smooth, humming sphere of silver and crimson light expanded outward from my core. It hovered three feet from my body, dense, quiet, and steady."Look at that," Vespera whispered, leaning on her cane. "How does it fe

  • BOUND TO MY AWAKENING    The Alpha’s Gambit

The rain beat a steady rhythm against the tall, arched windows of my tower study.Candlelight flickered over the massive oak map table, throwing long shadows across the stone walls. On paper, the Citadel was asleep. In reality, every faction within these walls was quietly sharpening their knives for the Equinox Assembly.A soft knock echoed at the heavy door—three quick taps, followed by two slow ones.I didn't lift my eyes from the map of the border passes. "Enter, Marcus."The heavy oak door creaked open, and Marcus stepped inside, locking the latch behind him. Rain dripped from the shoulders of his leather coat onto the dark stone floor as he pulled off his gloves."The border scouts just checked in," Marcus said, keeping his voice down. "Vane’s private men are still moving along the western ridge. They think they're invisible.""Let them think so," I replied, my voice calm, deep, and steady. "And Lyssandra?"Marcus let out a low huff, stepping closer to the table. "She had a late

  • BOUND TO MY AWAKENING    The Assembly Chessboard

The Grand Assembly Hall was huge, cold, and dark at night.I stood on the high balcony looking down at rows of empty stone seats. In just a few days, every pack leader, Elder, and trade chief would fill this room for the Equinox Assembly.Footsteps echoed softly behind me. Two men walked out of the shadows: Lord Vance, who controlled the southern farms, and Commander Rhys, who led the border guards. Both were powerful men, and right now, both were undecided on who to support."You called us out here very late, Lyssandra," Lord Vance said, crossing his heavy arms. "Elder Vane says Draven is losing control of the Citadel. People are nervous.""Elder Vane wants you to be nervous," I said calmly, stepping forward so the moonlight caught my face. "Because when you are scared, you stop thinking clearly."I opened a small leather folder and handed them two simple papers."Vane wants to return to the old Council system," I explained, keeping my words clear and direct. "Under Draven, your far

  • BOUND TO MY AWAKENING    The Eastern Network

The damp river mist clung to the hem of my charcoal cloak, down at the private river landing beneath the Citadel’s eastern cliffs, the morning sun had not yet touched the water. The black hull of a low-slung river vessel cut silently through the fog, its muffled engine slowing to a quiet hum as it bumped against the wooden pylons. Two men in dark, unbranded coats threw heavy hemp ropes around the iron cleats. Moments later, a tall figure stepped off the wooden plank, pulling back his hood to reveal sharp grey eyes and pale, silver-blond hair that matched my own."You look remarkably awake for five in the morning, little sister," Cassian murmured."Sleep is a luxury reserved for people without three trade guilds to manage," I replied, stepping forward to meet him. "Did you clear the lower bend without Draven’s border scouts seeing you?"Cassian offered a dry, faint smirk. "Draven’s scouts are looking for rogue shifters along the ridge. They aren't looking for a family cargo transport

  • BOUND TO MY AWAKENING    Silk and Steel

Sunlight filtered through the glass ceiling, catching the deep emerald tones of my silk blouse and reflecting off the crystal decanter resting on the white iron table.I sat at the head of the long garden table, holding a silver pen loosely between my manicured fingers. Around me sat my inner circle—three younger pack heiresses and two sharp female trade envoys who managed the regional logistics for the eastern territories."The northern transport routes are secure for the winter," Seraphina, a sleek shifter with silver-braided hair, reported softly, setting a leather folder before me. "We cleared the tariffs without the Elders' oversight.""Good," I said, my voice smooth, calm, and absolute. "Ensure the family heads in the lower valley receive their cut before Friday. We keep them loyal to us.""Lyssandra," chimed in Camille, an ambitious younger girl sitting near the end of the table, leaning forward with a conspiratorial smirk. "Speaking of the Elders... everyone is still talkin
