I pushed past two guys arguing over fantasy football on the narrow landing and made a sharp right down the second-floor hallway.

The door to the bedroom Carter had dragged Britney into... second one on the left... was shut tight. No sound coming from inside. Just a thin strip of yellow light spilling out from under the bottom wood panel onto the worn carpet.

I didn't stop. I didn't linger or lean against the wall trying to listen like some pathetic girl in a high school drama, lol.

I walked

Allie POV The Theta formal had a chocolate fountain, a string-light canopy, and an ice sculpture of the Greek letter theta that was already weeping onto the carpet by eight o'clock, and I stood next to it in a green dress I'd bought for a wedding I hadn't attended, pretending to be a woman with no regrets. My plan was scientific. Clara had taught me the word in a week of walking around with a purple pen: a control group. If I took a man to bed who had no history, no hoodie, and no idea how I took my eggs, and felt nothing at all in the morning, then Dean was a habit, like biting my thumbnail, and habits can be broken. I had a list of requirements, and they were the same as always. He had to be handsome. He had to be a stranger. He had to be someone who would never, ever, wait outside my building. So when a very tall man in a gray suit appeared beside the weeping sculpture and said, "It's crying," I turned around with my chin up and my heart beating like a woman reaching the top of

  • BOUND TO THE BILLIONAIRE CAPTAIN   Chapter 130

Marcus POV I keep all the messages in a folder on my phone. My dad always told me that a man should always have a paper trail. There were 306 messages sent to a girl named Clara Hayes. She stopped replying after the first week. I read them almost every night. I scroll down the months on my phone in my hotel room. Did you make it back okay? We should talk about Saturday. I'm sorry if it was awkward. You're being dramatic. Please just answer me. The last message was on the 14th of June, 3 years ago. It just said "ok. whatever. take care." At the time I thought that was very polite. She stopped replying. This is what my life revolved around. Other men revolve their lives around war or inheritances. A girl had stopped replying to a nice boy. She changed her number, changed schools, changed her whole life. No one in Tucson would tell me where she had gone. By the time my dad had enough contacts in enough offices to find out, I was 19 and didn't care anymore. However, in October, a

Carter POV There is a kind of quiet that settles in a hockey player's body just before a hit, a stillness that starts at the base of the skull and spreads out through the shoulders, and I had felt it a thousand times and never once like this. "That's him," Clara said again, so softly that I read it off her lips. For weeks I had been carrying a shape. I had built it in the dark out of almost nothing, a shadow with a stick, a faceless boy in a basement in Arizona, and I had kept it at a careful distance in the part of my mind where I stored the things I could do nothing about. I had imagined it a hundred ways. It had never occurred to me that it would be wearing rust and cream, laughing, with a bag of sunflower seeds in the pocket of its warm-up jacket. I looked at him for exactly as long as I could stand. He was tall, well-built, and entirely unremarkable, which was the worst part, because I had always assumed there would be something to see. He had the face of every boy who has b

Clara, I knew. Not by his face he was rounder now, smooth from never being asked anything or his jersey number it was just 9. But by his left slouched shoulder. How many times had I sat at the bottom of the stairs in the basement of a Tucson house and watched him do that little shrugging thing before the first face-off? I’d never be able to forget in a hundred sleepless nights. My body knew. The noise in the arena cut out to half volume, the chill from the ice hit my face and my legs felt like they were on a concrete floor. I could hear the score board humming in the corner of the rink. It turned into a tumble dryer in a laundry room. I sat down in Row 3 Seat 1 with a bed sheet hanging over my head with huge lettering that could be read from the moon. CHEER UP CLARA. I thought to myself. He knows my name. "Dolores," I said. "Honey," she replied. "Hands." I looked down. I hadn’t realised how tight my fingers were gripping the seat. My knuckles were white, like the ice. Dolo

  • BOUND TO THE BILLIONAIRE CAPTAIN   Chapter 127

Allie POV Clara had slept on the couch with her boots on and the lamp burning, which is how you sleep when you have decided to leave quickly, and at nine on Saturday morning I stood in the kitchen doorway with a coffee in each hand and the growing, unpleasant suspicion that I had been a terrible friend for about a week. I had noticed the pieces without putting them together, the way you notice a pot boiling over in another room. She had said fine eleven times on Thursday, which is ten more than a person who is fine. She had stopped humming. She flinched when the radiator knocked, a small whole-body shudder like a horse that has heard a branch break, and when I asked about Carter she answered in tidy, evenly spaced sentences, like someone reading from a card. She had not asked me one thing about Shawn, which, considering that I had spent three days working out how to tell her I'd said no and meant it, was either a miracle or a very bad sign. I had been busy, is what I'm saying. I ha

  • BOUND TO THE BILLIONAIRE CAPTAIN   Chapter 126

POV: Carter Sitting in the red seat in row 3 column 102 was an older man wearing a large fleecy vest as he ate salted peanuts out of his cardboard tray and threw the shells between his boots during the whole of the first period. I found my eyes drifting to that exact spot every time I made a rotation. It was something I couldn’t help, I found my natural instinct to check my edges as I circled around our net. Tilt my helmet up to look at the lower bowl to see if the dark hair, big briar hoodie and calm nature of the girl would be there. Her hands always folded neatly over her knees. But it was empty. Which hit me like a blind side check from a 6ft 4 enforcer. My feet felt heavy like they were stuck to the ice as if the zamboni had created a huge amount of wet slush. On the other bench Marcus Drake was sat in the bright white and red away jerseys of the Redwood team. His left hand was planted flat on the boards as he leant forward. He looked like he wasn’t someone who had hi
