DANICA

Hospitals were supposed to feel safe after what we’d been through, but this one had become a second home.

Valerie was sleeping soundly beside Ivan’s bed, her tiny chest rising and falling beneath the thin blanket. Ivan sat upright, pale but stronger now, and little Ivan drew circles with a blue crayon on the tray table.

For the first time in days, the room was peaceful.

Then the door opened.

A woman stepped in—heels, perfume, perfect hair, the kind of presence that didn’t belong in a hospital. My stomach twisted before she even spoke.

“You…” I started, blinking as her smile hit me like something rehearsed.

She didn’t falter. “Me. Hello, Danica.”

Ivan looked up from the papers on his lap. The faintest muscle ticked in his jaw. “What are you doing here, Amy?”

Her perfume reached me before her words did. It wasn’t loud, but it carried weight— like an old memory brushing past, almost familiar.

Amy moved closer, I could see through her feigned politeness. “Your assistant Mia, told

AMYHospitals have a way of making everyone smell the same—disinfectant, latex, and quiet fear. Yet as I walked through the long, white corridor toward Ivan’s private ward, my scent trailed behind me, soft but deliberate—warm vanilla, jasmine, and a hint of spice. Familiar. Tempting. The kind of fragrance that once made him stop breathing for a second too long. The nurse at the door hesitated when she saw me. She wasn't the same person I'd met the last time I came here. “Mrs.—”“Miss,” I corrected gently, flashing a calm smile. “Amy Bart. I’m an old friend of Mr. Clarkson’s. His assistant let me know he was hospitalized.”She gave a small nod, uncertain, but I knew the power of a polite smile mixed with confidence. Seconds later, I was in.The moment I stepped inside, my chest tightened.Ivan sat on the edge of the bed, dressed in a gray robe, pale but still maddeningly composed. That same unshakable presence even after surgery. His hair was slightly tousled, his eyes sharper than any

NOLANThe drive up to the Clarkson estate always has that way of swallowing sound. The farther I go, the quieter everything feels— the city’s hum fading into long, private roads lined with trees too perfect to be real. Father loves his quiet. Says it helps him think. I say it helps him control. The guard at the gate gives a curt nod before letting me through. The mansion looms like a monument to pride, all marble and glass, the kind of beauty that demands you bow, even if you hate it. I kill the engine, step out, and straighten my blazer. My pulse thumps just a little faster than I’d like.I shouldn’t feel that way. But no matter how old you get, your father is still your father, especially when that father is a Clarkson.Inside, the air smells of leather and polish. A maid greets me softly, tells me father is in his study. Of course he is.When I push open the door, he’s sitting by the fireplace, a chessboard before him, a glass of whisky beside it. He looks up once— those same cold

AMYThe cab hummed quietly, the driver tapping his fingers on the steering wheel to a faint jazz tune playing on the radio. Outside, the city blurred past—glass towers, bright billboards, and people moving like clockwork pieces.I sat back, my sunglasses hiding the spark in my eyes.My fingers hovered over my phone screen for a moment. Nolan’s number glared at me from my recent calls list.I almost pressed it. Almost. Then I caught the driver glancing at me in the rearview mirror and decided against it.Not yet. Not with an audience.Instead, I leaned against the window, pretending to be lost in thought, when in truth, my mind was running faster than the cab’s wheels.Ivan— my old obsession. Now lying in a hospital bed, and she was there beside him.Danica.Even the name tasted like something sour.I smiled faintly. “You really think you’ve won, don’t you?” I murmured under my breath.“Ma’am?” the driver asked, catching my voice.“Nothing,” I said smoothly. “You just missed the turn.”

“Amy, you look divine as always,” the stylist crooned as she ran a brush through my honey-blonde hair. “Planning to slay someone today?”“Not someone,” I said, watching my reflection with a smirk. “Just checking on an old friend.”The salon smelled of hairspray, nail polish, and gossip— my kind of perfume. I crossed my legs, admiring the glint of sunlight against my champagne-colored heels. The morning show on the mounted TV was buzzing about celebrity scandals, but none as juicy as the one I had stirred.“Still talking about that CEO marriage scandal,” the nail tech muttered, scrolling through her phone. “Man, whoever leaked those documents deserves a medal.”I smiled faintly. “You think so?”“Of course. Everyone’s been glued to it for days. Poor guy though— imagine being a billionaire and your whole private life out there like that.”I tapped my freshly manicured nails against the armrest. “I’m sure he’ll live.”The girl laughed, not catching the sarcasm. “Yeah, probably.”When my h

DANICAThe sun spilled through the hospital windows, warm and soft, and for the first time in weeks, the air didn’t feel heavy. Valerie was sitting up on her bed, giggling quietly as her brother showed her a new cartoon on the tablet. Ivan, beside her, looked a lot better—paler than usual, yes—but the spark in his eyes had returned.I was adjusting the blanket at the foot of Valerie’s bed when the door creaked open. Pete and Emma stepped in. Pete’s expression carried that same strange mix of warmth and something else I couldn’t quite place, something heavier, almost nervous. Emma, on the other hand, walked in smiling as always, holding a basket of fruit.“Well, would you look at that,” she said softly, setting it on the table. “You all look better already.”Ivan smiled faintly. “It’s been a long few days.”Pete’s gaze shifted from him to Valerie, lingering briefly on her small wrist where the silver bracelet glinted under the fluorescent light. Then his eyes moved up to the photo of m
