DANICA

I watched as Ivan’s footsteps echoed down the long corridor. He didn’t look back once. His phone had rung— its sharp vibration filling the silence between us and though he didn’t answer it, I knew it was pulling him back into the business that demanded him.

In no time, he was out of sight.

My arms tightened around the children, as though shielding them from the angry cloud he left behind. Valerie clung to me, her little face pressed into my side. Beside her, Little Ivan sniffled, his cheeks blotchy from crying.

I crouched down, brushing his hair with my fingers gently. “Shh,” I whispered, forcing my voice to soften even though my own chest was tight. “It’s all going to be alright, my loves. Do you hear me? Mama’s here now. You’re safe.”

Valerie peered up at me with those questioning eyes that always saw more than I wanted her to. “Why were you shouting at uncle Ivan?”

Her small voice broke something fragile inside me.

“I wasn’t shouting,” I lied gently. “We were just… talking t

IVAN“Daddy!”The word struck me like a blow. A small, bright voice that carried an innocence I didn’t deserve but still somehow claimed me.The boy’s little arms wrapped around my legs, warm, insistent, familiar in a way that rattled the bones of my pride. I bent instinctively, hands scooping him up before my mind caught up with my body.He was light, yet solid. His small frame nestled against me as though he’d always belonged here— in my arms, in this house, in my world. And then I saw it.The resemblance. His dark hair that fell across his forehead in a stubborn wave. His piercing gray-blue eyes that looked at me with unfiltered joy. The set of his jaw, the tilt of his small chin, even the faintest expression when he smiled. My son.My blood. And Danica had kept him hidden from me.Anger coiled in my chest like a snake. For years I had mourned, searched, raged in silence at her absence. And all the while, she had kept this boy— my boy from me.“Daddy,” he said again, giggling, as t

IVANThe weeks quickly flew by as I got occupied with one thing or the other. Business on the other hand, seemed to try out every last nerve of mine.It was just eleven in the morning and I already needed a break from work today. Good thing I had to see Pete. We've been postponing seeing each other for weeks now, if not a month. Due to one reason or the other.“Mia” I spoke into the intercom. “Tell John to get the car started. I'll be down in the next five minutes.”“Alright sir,” replied the clipped female voice.Clearing the huge mess of work on my desk, I picked my phone and headed for the elevator. It was a private one used only by me and in no time, I was at the ground floor.By the time I got to the car, John already made it purr to life. Sliding into the sleek seat, I felt the cool air from the conditioner hit my skin. Just what I needed at the moment.“Where are we headed sir?” He asked courteously.“The cafe upstreet. St Laurent's.”“Yes sir.”The drive was a smooth one. With

IVAN“Back to work,” I grunted. The glow from the glass walls of my office cast long streaks of morning light across the polished floors. Chicago buzzed beneath me, a restless city that thrived on ambition and achievement. My fingers drummed lightly against the large office desk as I scrolled through the latest acquisition reports. Numbers never lied, but people did. That was the lesson Amy had driven into me. My jaw flexed involuntarily at the thought, but I forced the muscle to still. She no longer mattered. She was dust in the wind— ashes I had already blown off my palms.A knock at my door snapped me from the spiral.“Come in.”My assistant, Mia, stepped inside with her usual briskness, dropping a thick file onto my desk. “Quarterly breakdown from finance. We’re above projections by twelve percent.”“Not enough.”Her mouth twitched nervously. She knew better than to argue. I flipped the file open, scanning the pages with practiced ease, eyes darting from profit margins to operat

DAVIDDays crawled past, after the incident that happened at home, with Ivan stopping by. The thought had been circling my head all morning, a restless bird that refused to land. I had promised myself— no, I had sworn— that today would be the day I finally said it out loud. Three years of pretending, of burying feelings under the guise of friendship and loyalty, was long enough. Danica deserved to know. But Ivan’s shadow lingered like smoke in a closed room. Even here, thousands of miles away, the man found a way to intrude. Greece had been our haven, a place to breathe again, to build something whole out of the wreckage of her past. And yet, the second he appeared on her porch, it was as though the air thickened again, poisoned by his voice, his accusations, his arrogance. But today, I was to pick up little Ivan from school and Valerie from the hospital.I gripped the steering wheel tighter than I meant to. The kids were in the backseat, their laughter bubbling like music as they a

IVANThe flight back to Chicago left me feeling more at loss than how I imagined it would. The sight of Danica and the new life she had formed for herself played a huge role in it.Home now, I headed for my study which was silent, save for the faint hum of the air conditioning and the soft thud of a drawer sliding open. I sat there with the brown envelope in hand. The original copy of the same one I’d tossed at Danica days ago.I could still see her face when she read the first line, her lips parted, her eyes burning with defiance that made my blood heat.I pressed my lips into a tight line. I couldn’t afford distractions. Not now.Sliding the envelope into the lower drawer, I turned the key twice and pushed it into my pocket. This wasn’t for anyone else’s eyes. Fortunately no one lived with me.But as I pushed the drawer shut, my gaze caught on something lodged deep in the far back corner. A small golden case with dark trim, faintly scuffed along the edges. For a moment, I thought it
