I couldn't wrap my head around the fact that Ivan's copy of the contract was what had led us to this point.

My fingers brushed over the scattered contents of the drawer, rifling through it. Just maybe it was still there somewhere.

And then I froze.

The metallic golden case. An exact replica of the one in my room. What in hell was it doing in Ivan's room?

“What is this?” I whispered, turning round to face him as I lifted the object up.

He looked at me quizzically before responding. “Oh, that! It was gifted to me. Two of them, but someone… a woman was foolish or maybe smart enough to run away with one.”

His words made my heartbeat drum in my ears.

“Ivan—” my voice cracked, “Why is this here, Ivan?” I was trembling now.

“Because I just told you it's mine. Where else would my property be?” The quizzical look was back on his face now.

“Oh my goodness!” My mind was running wild. I must be in some kind of dream right now.

“Are you okay?” Ivan asked. “You look like you just escaped from a nig

IVAN “You did what?” I couldn't believe my ears. This must be some kind of mistake. Except… Except, she truly was the person. A gasp escaped my lips as I stood up from my crouching position beside her. “That was why when I saw the other one in your room, I was shaken to my bones,” she said, lifting herself from the ground. “And you're sure it's the very same thing?” I asked “Yes it is. Why would I lie about it or even have the same type of golden cigarette case with ‘CI’ initials also marked on it.” She let out a shaky sigh. “It's not like I wanted this to happen, but here we are.” I paced my office for a short while, using my fingers to rake my hair at the same time trying to gain control over everything at once. It's been a long time since news like this has shaken me. Unexpectedly. “So, that means Valerie and Ivan are both my kids?” I stopped pacing to brace myself for the next course of action. “If indeed it was the both of us that night.” “Yes,” she simply said. “Then

IVANSince the missing document incident, I couldn't wait for Pete to give me some tangible results showing who the real culprit was.And somehow I had hoped the culprit would be none else than Amy. With the way things were, she was the only person that came to mind, no matter how much I thought about it.I had called Pete today and he said it would be ready soon and all I had to do was relax. So why was it so damn difficult for me to?Still thinking about it, Mia buzzed me via the intercom to let me know I had a visitor, one of the many clients I was supposed to negotiate with today.Getting my head back into the game, I prepared mentally for the visitor. The meeting with my client ended on a very good note and also helped to clear away my initial foul mood.Seeing him out of my office, my eyes landed on a strange visitor. Danica. I wasn't expecting her so why was she here?I tried not to show my surprise, quickly disguising my reaction to that of nonchalance.I quickly straightened

DANICANot being able to sleep during the night, I couldn't wait for morning to come. As soon as it was five a.m, I jumped out of bed, showered and made some pancakes for little Ivan who was still fast asleep in bed.By six-thirty, I had woken little Ivan up, bathed him. By seven, the nanny had come around and assisted with feeding him. I gave him some pecks and left for the hospital. The morning light bled into the hospital corridors, pale and thin, as though even the sun itself couldn’t bear to shine too brightly here. I sat by Valerie’s bed, her frail chest rising and falling in shallow, uneven rhythms. Her face was almost translucent now, the veins under her skin visible, her lips dry. Every time I looked at her, a part of me broke a little more, like porcelain cracking under invisible pressure.I’d been counting her breaths. Not in a conscious way, but like my body had trained itself to make sure she was still tethered to this world.Thirty-nine… forty… forty-one…The door to he

IVANThe door shut in my face with a soft click. For a moment, I lingered in the hallway, staring at the marble floor as if it might give me answers. Danica’s voice had been steady when she thanked me, but her eyes told another story— haunted, searching, as though she carried a secret heavy burden on her.I exhaled slowly, forcing the tension in my shoulders down. There was no use standing here, trying to read ghosts in silence. I turned and made my way back toward my own wing, the echo of my footsteps against the marble floor a steady drumbeat to my restless thoughts.Back in my room, I shrugged off my shirt and draped it carelessly over a chair. The night had been long. Too long. But exhaustion never won against suspicion. The missing contract gnawed at me like a rat in the dark, chewing through the edges of my patience. Someone had dared to take it, and I needed to know who.I sat at my desk, unlocked my phone, and typed out a quick message to Pete:Tomorrow. My office. Urgent. My

IVANThe words hung between us like a blade. For a moment, silence pressed heavy. The air felt charged, heavier than it had in the conference hall under the reporters’ flashbulbs.I studied her face carefully. She wasn’t asking out of curiosity. She wanted answers. Proof. And for the first time in a long while, I couldn’t predict what she would do once she had them.“You want to see it tonight?” I asked slowly, my tone even, though my mind ran a hundred miles ahead. Her gaze didn’t falter. “Yes. Tonight.”I drew in a breath, fighting the instinct to deny her. But she’d been dragged into enough problems because of me. Refusing would only fuel suspicion, maybe even resentment I couldn’t afford right now.“Very well,” I said finally, my voice low. “Come with me.”Her brows lifted just slightly, as though she hadn’t expected me to agree so quickly. But she followed, silent, as I turned toward the far end of the hall— the path to my study. The study swallowed us in silence the moment I ope
