Adrian crossed his arms over his chest. "So what fragments do you actually have?"

Zane closed his eyes briefly, sifting through scattered, disjointed impressions.

"A girl obviously."

Adrian rolled his eyes. "Brilliant detail."

Zane ignored the sarcasm. "Silver laced dark brown hair."

Adrian’s relaxed posture shifted almost imperceptibly. Zane continued. "A soft, hesitant voice."

His fingers tapped a rhythmic beat against his leather seat. "And a distinct scent."

"A scent?"

"I can't pinpoint the

A wave of heat rushed straight into Nessa's face, making her cheeks burn. She wished the marble floor would split open and swallow her whole right then and there.Zane struck his lighter, the small flame briefly illuminating the sharp angles of his jawline and cheekbones."It isn't as though I find you particularly tempting," he stated flatly. The words should have offered her a sense of relief, but instead, they landed like a cold slap, leaving her thoroughly humiliated."Not that it changes anything," he added, exhaling a thin stream of gray smoke toward the high ceiling."You look completely terrified every single time I step within two feet of you."Nessa stared down at the green silk clutched in her hands, her heart pounding even harder. Because he wasn't wrong. She was terrified. Not because she believed he would physically strike her, but because she had no idea how to survive his presence.Zane Blackwood completely dominated every single room he entered, every conversation, ev

"Breathe," he commanded softly, his lips so close the warmth of his breath brushed her cheek. "Stop draining the color from your face. Your skin is already pale enough, there's nowhere left for the blood to retreat." His fingers slid upward, cupping the edge of her jawline. He tilted her face upward, forcing her to look straight into his eyes. She couldn't move. She couldn't draw a coherent thought. Every single word in her mind seemed to evaporate under the crushing weight of his presence. His gaze flicked down to her lips for a fraction of a second before returning to her eyes. "There it is," he whispered smoothly. "That exact look." He held her jaw firmly for one more long, suspended second. Then, just as suddenly as he had invaded her space, he let go, sat back, and pushed his door open as if the interaction had never occurred at all. "Come along then," he said effortlessly, stepping out into the crisp morning sunlight. "Let's go buy you a proper set of clothes."

Nessa slipped into the leather back seat without uttering a single word. Zane slid in right behind her, the heavy vehicle door shutting with a solid, airtight thud that cut off the quiet morning outside. As the sedan pulled smoothly away from the curb, Nessa kept her eyes locked straight ahead, refusing to look back at Talia’s house, she simply couldn't bring herself to face it.Zane leaned back into the dark leather upholstery and reached inside his tailored coat. The sleek lighter clicked on his second try, a small flame catching as he pulled a slow drag from a cigarette. He cracked the side window just a fraction, letting a thin trail of smoke drift out into the cool air."You don't smoke," he observed, his silver eyes fixed on the misty road ahead. "So I won't bother offering."A heavy silence stretched between them before he broke it again."Have you eaten anything yet?""I'm not hungry."He let out a short, breathy exhale through his nose. "And yet you'd happily be anywhere

The vehicle slowed its pace, coming to a smooth stop along a quiet residential street in the lower Black wolf district. The houses here were modest and well-kept, the kind of neighborhood where families left their porch lights on in the evening and knew their neighbors by name.It was nothing like the sprawling, gated estates Zane had grown up moving between. Or his house at the upper district of the Silver estate. "This is the residence, my prince."Zane looked out the tinted window at the two-story house for a moment, his expression entirely unreadable. Then he stepped out of the back seat without waiting for his driver to open the door for him.He walked up the front flagstone path and knocked twice against the heavy wooden door. There was immediate movement inside. Muffled voices. The brief sound of someone telling someone else to grab the door, followed by quick, approaching footsteps. The door swung open.Talia's mother stood on the threshold. She looked at him, taking in his

The phone almost slipped from her numb fingers. Then she read another; *Some wolfless strays really don't know their place in this kingdom.**House Rowan should be thoroughly ashamed.*And another. Then, without warning, the wall-mounted television in the corner of the Talia's room flickered, a stark, high-priority news banner crawling rapidly across the bottom of the display.Nessa turned her head slowly toward the screen.Talia, who she had assumed was still fast asleep beside her, was already sitting up against the headboard, her knees pulled tightly to her chest as she watched the monitor. She had been awake for a while. The news anchor spoke in rapid, hushed tones, shuffling paper documents before the feed abruptly cut to a crowded press podium. Flashbulbs went off in blinding, chaotic waves.Reporters were packed together so tightly that the hall looked like a wall of shouting faces and straining microphones. And then Zane stepped out onto the platform.Nessa sat up straight a

Nessa didn't wait to figure out the unreadable expression on her friend's face. She pulled open the passenger door and slid into the seat, staring straight ahead at the rainy windshield, the cold leather pressing against her back through her damp uniform. She heard the faint sound of Talia steadying herself outside, taking a long, deliberate breath. Then Talia got into the driver's side and shut the door without saying a word. After a long pause, Talia turned the key, the engine roaring to life. The ride across the boundaries was painfully quiet. Neither girl uttered a single word. The city lights swept past the windows in long, blurred streaks of silver and gold, illuminating Nessa's tear-stained face for a fleeting second before plunging her back into darkness.Talia kept throwing side glances at her, but every time she looked over, Nessa appeared even more broken, as if she were trying to physically shrink and disappear into the passenger seat."Nessa...""Don't."The word came ou
