~Chiara.

“Welcome to the circus, Chiara,” Amelia murmured under her breath before gliding gracefully back to her seat.

I waited for Alex’s reaction — surely, he’d be furious at her for touching him like that.

Nothing.

If anything, he looked… lighter. Happier.

“Amelia?”

“What?” she drawled, peering up at him through those long, impossibly perfect lashes.

“Please behave,” he said flatly.

She let out a soft laugh. “Okay, but you know me. No promises.”

She whispered the last part with a teasing smirk, and he actually chuckled — pulling out a chair for me.

I sat down stiffly, sneaking a look at Margaux. Instead of disapproval, she seemed almost delighted by their playful exchange.

In no time, dinner began — though it felt less like a meal and more like an interrogation disguised as polite conversation.

Margaux grilled me on everything.

My parents.

My background.

My education.

My financial history.

My job.

And for every answer I gave, her reactions dripped with quiet condescension — like she was tallying points to prove I didn’t belong here.

Her expression screamed: too ordinary, too common, too lowly for my son.

A familiar ache welled in my chest — that same shame I’d felt years ago, watching my parents skip dinner just so I could have the last egg in the house.

The taste of poverty. Of humiliation.

I straightened my back. Enough was enough.

I wasn’t going to let this woman reduce me to nothing.

“Yes, Mrs. Carrington,” I said, forcing a steady smile. “I actually love my work. In fact, my company’s been developing a proposal for months now — one that might interest the hospitality division of the Carrington Group.”

Margaux’s entire demeanor changed. Her spine went rigid, eyes flashing sharply toward Alex.

“You knew about this?” she asked, her tone laced with accusation.

Alex sighed. “That was after I married her, Mum. And please, can we not do this?”

“Wait, what?” she interrupted, her voice rising. “She’s pitching to us? Can’t you see she’s trying to use your influence to bypass due process?”

The air went still.

Her words hit like a slap.

In two sentences, she’d called me a gold digger.

My heart hammered with disbelief.

All my life, my parents had taught me the value of earning everything through hard work — every tuition payment, every job, every ounce of dignity. They’d sacrificed so much to make sure I never had to beg or take shortcuts.

And now, this woman had just insulted all of that.

I lifted my head, meeting her eyes. Margaux leaned back in her chair, a smug little smile tugging at her lips, certain she’d struck a nerve.

Amelia, of course, was grinning openly — enjoying the show.

Then Alex turned to me. His gaze caught mine — those beautiful tricolored eyes searching, questioning, waiting.

I bit my lip to stop it from trembling.

A sharp clatter broke the silence. Alex had dropped his cutlery. He calmly picked up a serviette, wiped his mouth, and tossed it onto his plate.

“Mum,” he said tightly, “apologize to Chiara. Now.”

The words came out low but firm — a quiet thunder that made the room freeze.

Margaux’s head snapped toward him. “What?” she barked, clearly stunned.

Before Alex could say another word, I reached out and caught his arm.

“No,” I said softly. “I’ve got this.”

I’d fought my own battles all my life. I didn’t need him defending me — not here, not against his family. If he did, they’d only accuse me of manipulating him.

I faced Margaux squarely.

“It’s only natural that you’re worried about your son’s hasty choice of a wife, Mrs. Carrington,” I said evenly. “But the answer to your question is no. My team’s work speaks for itself. Our proposal was submitted to the Carrington Group long before Alexander and I ever became… acquainted.”

I took a deep breath, keeping my voice steady.

“If my company wins that contract, it will be on merit — not because I married the CEO. I love my job, and I value my professional integrity above everything else.”

Margaux blinked, momentarily thrown off by my calm defiance. I caught the flicker of disbelief on her face and felt a surge of quiet pride.

“We’ll see about that, Ms. DeLuca,” she said finally, recovering her poise. “The Carrington Group, as I mentioned earlier, does not tolerate even the perception of favoritism.”

She paused dramatically, slicing into her steak. The clink of her knife echoed like a warning.

I watched her chew slowly, every instinct in me telling me I wasn’t going to like what came next.

“And so,” she said, swallowing and dabbing her lips with a napkin, “with that being said… I’ll have to ask you to quit your job — first thing tomorrow morning.”

~ ChiaraThe house was quieter once Alexander dragged me from the living room. But my heartbeat wouldn’t calm.Olivia’s words kept echoing: “Some doors shouldn’t be opened… unless you’re ready for the truth.”I glanced at Alexander. His jaw was tight, eyes stormy. Every muscle in his body screamed “stay away from that room.”But curiosity gnawed at me.“Alex,” I whispered, tugging his sleeve. “Which room was she talking about?”He stopped, his hand tightening around mine like steel.“Chiara… forget it,” he hissed.I shook my head. “No. I have to know. She didn’t even say east wing for nothing.”His stare cut through me.“Chiara, you don’t understand. Some truths… you don’t want to touch them. Not yet. Not ever.”I swallowed. “I do want to understand. I can’t just… not know.”He turned abruptly, leading me toward the library. His body was a wall between me and the east wing.Every step screamed tension, every line of his shoulders radiated danger.“Alex… why are you so tense? • BREAKING the BOSS   CHAPTER 27 — THE WOMAN IN WHITE

~ ChiaraThirty minutes later, I was in a simple but elegant blouse and wide-leg pants that screamed “I’m trying to impress someone I didn’t plan to impress.” The mansion’s living room looked different—sunlit, airy, almost soft—because sitting on the pristine couch was a woman who radiated pure, disarming warmth. She wore white. A white dress, white shawl, pearls, hair in a low chignon streaked with silver. She looked like the kind of woman who smelled like lavender and baked cookies on weekends. She stood the second she saw me. “Oh sweetheart,” she breathed, hands opening wide in welcome, “you must be Chiara.” I blinked. Hard. Sweetheart? She crossed the room with surprising swiftness and took both my hands before I could decide whether to step forward or step back. “Oh my goodness, you’re even more beautiful than the tabloids made you out to be,” she said, squeezing gently. “No wonder Alexander has such trouble letting you out of his sight.” Behind me, Alexander’s inhale

Jessica Just to make sure Fiona was out of it for the rest of the morning until I left for work, I drugged her beer. I wasn’t letting her ruin this shift for me—not after working so hard throughout the night to create this pitch. Chiara had given me a chance, and by Jove, I wasn’t letting this opportunity slip. I surveyed myself in my new pinstripe pantsuit. I’d gotten it for an outrageous price, but it was worth it because I looked official. It hugged my curves perfectly. Chiara had transferred some money to me, and I completed the rest with the tips I’d gotten from my customers during my night shift. After one last check on my mother, I clutched my shoulder bag and headed out. Running around to the back of my apartment where I’d chained my scooter to a pole, I unchained it and tried wheeling it out—only to find out I had a flat tire. I muttered a string of curses. “Of all days!” I whined. Without an alternative, I had to walk all the way to the train station in my h

~JAXON. I was yet to breathe a word of apology to her about the evening before Alexander stormed in,eager to know what had scared her. It's quite amusing to see him erratic about a woman other than Amelia. And Chiara had surprised me.She wasn't the kind of person I expected her to be, having hid in the room all through their banter . Alex barked a laugh. He sobered and snorted. "If that's your idea of an apology,Try harder." I made a restless movement with my fingers.Aplogies never seated well with me but if it meant my relationship with Alex on the line,Darn it all to hell. Alexander was all I had in the way of a personal relationship. "I just didn't want to watch you mov

Least of all after I've moved most of your stuff after all we wouldn't be in this if it wasn't for your traipsing around with Jaxon.”I swallowed hard , clenching my fists to control my anger“Amd who's the blame for that, huh? ~Chiara The sound of the fist connecting with Jaxon’s jaw made me flinch as if someone had slammed my own face. Time slowed for a fraction of a second. My stomach twisted, my hands fell to my sides. “Jaxon!” I shouted, stepping towards him instinctively to help h up—but Alexander was already there about to throw another punch. "Alex!!! Wait... What do you think you're doing!?" I yelled and stood in front of him. Blocking his access to Jaxon. I didn't understand what was going on. I looked at Alexander. He was seething. His eyes had gone almost dark with fury. "Step out of the way ,Chiara." He grated out of his teeth. I felt Jaxon stand up behind him and just like that I was trapped between two alpha billionaire males. “Alex—what are you—” Jaxon tried to speak but broke off as soon as Alexander needled him with his gaze. Alexander’s gaze swung to me, sharp and assessing, and my heart lurched. I’d never seen him this close up, this furious. And I got the impress
