Chapter 27: Boardroom War

POV: David_

The elevator doors slid open on the 150th floor and cold hit me like a fist.

Benz Tower wasn’t a building. It was a blade. Glass and steel drove into Geneva’s sky, and tonight every window was dark except one. Floor 150. The boardroom.

Harry’s boardroom.

“Don’t,” Jennifer whispered behind me. Her hand caught my sleeve. “David, if we walk in there, there’s no contract left to save. Only war.”

I looked down at her. Elena. The woman who’d spent eleven years hating me, hiding from me, raising our daughter alone because she thought I’d chosen the company over her. She wasn’t wrong. But she was wrong about tonight.

I wasn’t choosing the company.

I was choosing her.

“The bomb’s on a timer,” I said quietly. I showed her my phone. 2:58:00. Counting down. “Harry wants the Benz legacy to die with us in that room. Unless we give him Elena.”

Jennifer’s jaw tightened. “Then we won't give him to me.”

“We give him something better,” I said. And I pushed the elevator button again.

The doors closed. Up. Up. Toward the roof. Toward the helipad. Toward the only place Harry wouldn’t expect us to go.

Because Clause Seven wasn’t about who owned Benz Holdings.

It was about who owned the truth.

*1. The Deal*

Eleven years ago, my father called me into this same boardroom. Edward Benz Sr. Dying, but still sharp enough to cut.

“Clause Seven,” he’d said, sliding a contract across the table. “If you ever lose the company, you lose the right to know why it exists.”

I’d signed. Because I was 28 and arrogant and thought a company was just money.

I was wrong.

Benz Holdings wasn’t built on steel and shipping. It was built on blood. My grandfather’s blood. My father’s blood. And now, Harry’s blood, if he got his way.

The elevator dinged. Roof access.

Wind slammed into us, carrying snow and the smell of jet fuel. The helicopter sat waiting, blades still. Harry stood beside it, a gun in one hand, a detonator in the other.

And beside him, tied to a chair: Edward Benz Sr.

Not dead. Not yet.

“Hello, brother,” Harry said. “You’re late.”

I stepped forward. Jennifer stayed behind me. Elena hid behind her mother. Smart girl.

“You want the company?” I said. “Take it.”

I threw the contract at his feet. The pages scattered in the wind. Clause Seven, torn in half.

Harry laughed. “Too late, David. The timer’s already running. Benz Tower goes up in 2 minutes, with or without you.”

“No,” I said. “With you.”

I pressed my phone.

The detonator in Harry’s hand beeped once. Then he died.

His smile froze. “What did you do?”

“I did what my father taught me,” I said. “Never let the other man hold the trigger.”

I held up a second detonator. Smaller. Older. The one Edward Sr. had given me eleven years ago, the night he made me sign Clause Seven.

“This doesn’t blow up Benz Tower, Harry,” I said. “It blows up your account. Every offshore shell. Every dirty dollar you’ve been hiding. Gone.”

Harry’s face twisted. “You’d destroy billions to save her?”

“I’d destroy the world to save them,” I said. And I meant it.

Jennifer stepped forward then. Not behind me. Beside me.

“No,” she said. Her voice was steady. Strong. The voice of a woman who’d raised a child alone and never once asked me for help. “We don’t destroy anything. We will rebuild.”

She pulled Elena forward. Our daughter. Six years old. Eyes like mine, but softer. Kinder.

“This is Elena Benz,” Jennifer said. “Your niece, Harry. Your family.”

Harry looked at the girl. Really looked. For the first time in eleven years, he saw something other than revenge.

He saw blood.

*2. The Truth*

The timer on my phone hit 1:30:00.

Not a bomb timer. A heart monitor.

Edward Sr. was dying. Again. For real this time. The doctors had given him hours, not days. That’s why Harry had dragged him here. One last play. One last chance to make me choose.

“Your father built Benz Holdings on smuggling,” Harry said. “Drugs. Guns. People. Clause Seven was his way of making sure you’d never know. Until you lost everything.”

I shook my head. “No. Clause Seven was his way of making sure I’d never become him.”

I knelt beside Edward Sr. His hand was cold. Paper-thin skin over bone. But his eyes were still sharp. Still my father.

“David,” he whispered. “Did you sign?”

“I tore it up,” I said.

A ghost of a smile. “Good boy.”

He looked at Harry. “And you, son. Did you learn?”

Harry didn’t answer. He just stared at Elena. At the little girl who had his eyes, his nose, his blood. The family he’d tried to erase.

The timer hit 1:00:00.

Not a bomb. A life.

Edward Sr. coughed. Blood on his lips. “Harry. Let them go. Let the company go. It was never worth this.”

Harry’s hand tightened on the detonator. Not the dead one I’d swapped. The real one. The one wired to charges in the foundation.

“Why?” he asked. Not to Edward Sr. To me. “Why her? Why now? You had eleven years to come back. Eleven years to fix this.”

“Because I was a coward,” I said. “And she wasn’t.”

I looked at Jennifer. She’d survived me. Survived Harry. Survived raising Elena alone in a two-room flat with no money and no name. She’d built something real while I’d been building walls.

“Clause Seven wasn’t about losing the company,” I said. “It was about finding what matters more.”

The timer hit 0:30:00.

Harry’s thumb hovered over the button.

Then Elena walked forward. Small steps. Small hand reaching up.

“Uncle Harry?” she said.

Harry flinched like she’d struck him.

Elena took his hand. The one holding the detonator. She didn’t pull it away. She just held it. Small fingers over his big ones.

“You look sad,” she said.

Harry broke.

Not loud. Not dramatic. Just… broke. The gun clattered to the roof. The detonator slipped from his hand.

He fell to his knees. And for the first time in eleven years, Harry Benz cried.

*3. The Choice*

The timer hit 0:00:00.

Nothing happened.

Because there was never a bomb. Only a heart monitor. Only Edward Sr. Only time running out.

Harry looked up at me, tears cutting through the dirt on his face. “He’s gone.”

I nodded. Edward Sr.’s chest was still. His eyes closed. Peaceful, for once.

Jennifer knelt beside him. Took his cold hand. “Thank you,” she whispered. “For giving him back to me. Even if it was only for a minute.”

I put my arm around her shoulders. Elena leaned against my leg.

Harry stayed on his knees. Broken. Empty.

“What now?” he asked.

“Now we rebuild,” I said. “Not Benz Holdings. Something better. Something clean. Something worth his name.”

Harry looked at Elena. Then Jennifer. Then at me.

“I don’t know how,” he said.

“You will,” Jennifer said. She stood. Held out her hand. “Family teaches family.”

Harry stared at her hand like it was a foreign object. Like he didn’t remember the last time someone offered him help instead of a weapon.

Slowly, he took it.

The wind carried the torn pages of Clause Seven off the roof. Down. Down. Into the Geneva night.

Gone.

*4. The After*

Three months later, Benz Holdings didn’t exist anymore.

In its place: Benz Foundation. Clean energy. Clean water. Clean money. Every dirty dollar Harry had hidden, now funding hospitals and schools and the kind of things Edward Sr. should have built from the start.

Harry ran it. With Jennifer as his CFO. With Elena as his shadow, following him everywhere, teaching him how to be human again.

Me? I ran with nothing.

I just… was.

Husband. Father. Man.

No more boardrooms. No more Clause Seven. No more choosing between family and company.

Because I’d finally learned there was no choice to make.

Family was the company.

Family was everything.

One night, late, I found Harry in Edward Sr.’s old office. He wasn’t working. He was just sitting. Looking at a photo on the desk. The three of us. Me, him, our father. Taken before the war. Before the blood.

“I was so angry,” Harry said without looking up. “Angry at him. Angry at you. Angry at the world.”

“I know,” I said.

“I thought if I destroyed everything, the pain would stop.”

“Did it?”

Harry shook his head. Then he looked at me. Really looked. “No. It only stopped when she held my hand.”

Elena. Six years old. The daughter I’d never known I had. The niece he’d never known he needed.

Family.

The word I’d spent eleven years running from. The word that saved us all.

Harry stood. I walked to the window. Looked out over Geneva. Over the city Edward Sr. had built with dirty money and clean hands.

“I think he’d be proud,” Harry said quietly.

“Yeah,” I said. “I think he would.”

Behind us, Jennifer laughed. Elena was trying to teach her uncle how to fold paper airplanes. He was terrible at it. She was patient.

Family.

Not a contract. Not a clause. Not a war.

Just love. Messy, broken, beautiful love.

And for the first time in eleven years, I wasn’t afraid of it.

I was home.

POV: Jennifer_The Benz Foundation office smelled like new paint and old ghosts. Three months after the roof. Three months after Clause Seven burned in the Geneva wind. Three months after I learned that the man I’d spent eleven years hating was the same man who’d saved my life with his body. David was at the window. Back to me. Shoulders tight. The way they got when he was trying not to break something. Or someone. Harry was in the boardroom with Elena, teaching her how to read a P&L sheet. She was six. She called it “money coloring.” He called it “redemption.” Me? I was staring at a file on the desk. His file. The one I wasn’t supposed to find. *1. The Discovery*It was an accident. I was looking for Elena’s school registration forms in David’s office. The drawer stuck. I yanked it. The false bottom popped open. Inside: a thin medical folder. No name. Just a date. 11 years ago. The night Edward Benz Sr. faked his death. I should’ve closed it. I should’ve put it ba

  • BRIDE FOR LEASE   Chapter 26: The Broker

POV: David The market opened in 47 minutes. I knew because every second was ticking on Laurent’s dashboard. Red numbers. Benz Holdings bleeding out at 18% pre-market because of the kiss video in Ch 25. Harry stood in front of his SUV with 12 men and enough guns to start a war. Elena in my arms. Jennifer’s hand in mine, a gun pressed into her palm that she hated but held anyway. “Hello, family,” Harry said. He smiled. The same smile Robert used before he pulled a trigger. “Time to choose which Benz dies first.” I didn’t choose. I shot the tire on his lead SUV. Chaos. Bullets. Laurent floored it. The car fishtailed around Harry’s blockade and we were moving, Geneva streets blurring past at 5:12 AM. Jennifer twisted in her seat. “You just started a war.” “No,” I said. “Harry did, ten years ago, when he killed my father.” Elena’s small voice cut through the gunfire behind us. “Mom, what’s a broker?” Jennifer pulled her closer. “Nothing you need to worry about, baby.” She was

I was standing by the window, watching snow fall on a city that wanted us dead.My phone buzzed. Once. Then twice. Then it didn’t stop.Unknown number. _“You should’ve signed, Ms. Benz. David in a black tux, me in the red dress I’d worn to sell the lie. The band played something slow. He’d pulled me onto the dance floor to “calm the market” after the board vote failed on Ch 27. “Just the act,” he’d said in my ear. “Smile for the cameras.”I smiled. Eleven years of lies distilled into one second. “You lied to me for eleven years,” I said. My voice didn’t shake. It couldn’t. If it shook, Elena would see it. If Elena saw it, she’d break. “Get out.” David didn’t move. Of course he didn’t. David Benz didn’t follow orders. He gave them. He owned buildings. He owned airspace. He owned the moment you thought you had control. But he didn’t own me. Not anymore. Elena pressed her face into my leg. “Mom? What’s wrong?” I crouched. Put my hands on her shoulders. It made my face calm. The same face I used in boardrooms when men tried to tell me I didn’t belong. “Nothing’s wrong, baby. We’re just playing a game. Hide and seek.” “Hide and seek with bombs?” Elena whispered. “Especially with bombs,” I said. I kissed her forehead. It tasted like smoke and fear. Behind me, David spoke. “Jennifer—” “Don’t

  • BRIDE FOR LEASE   The Ghost

Chapter 23: The Ghost_POV: David Benz David didn’t panic. David never panicked. Panic was for men who hadn’t watched their father bleed out on a parking garage floor at age seventeen. Panic was for boys who thought the world was fair. So when the Dubai police captain read Jennifer’s charges at 3:47 AM, David catalogued the room. Three exits. Six armed men. One camera with a blinking red light that meant live feed to someone who wasn’t in the room. Harry was watching. David let them cuff Jennifer. He let them take Elena. He didn’t move. Not yet. Because the first rule of Benz Holdings board wars: let them think you’re cornered. Then buy the corner. He was led to a separate SUV. No cuffs. That told him everything. They weren’t arresting him. They were isolating him. Making Jennifer think she was alone. Harry’s game. Always Harry’s game. Through the window, Jennifer looked at him. No fear in her eyes. Just that steel she got when she was cornered and calculating. She
