Chapter 2

Author: Mountain River
As soon as I finished speaking, a wave of exhaustion washed over me.

Juan Sanchez, the Famiglia Medico, hurriedly injected me with a cardiac injection.

The sharp pain immediately brought me back to my senses.

Juan wiped off the sweat on his forehead and said, "Ms. Cabrera, you must try to stay awake as much as you can. If you pass out now, you may never wake up again.

"Think about your husband and your baby. They both need you."

Don also spoke up in a stern, authoritative voice, "You saved my life, and I will never forget it.

"When you've recovered, I will give you everything that you deserve. The child in your womb will also be my godson.

"Hold on. I've already sent someone to find Fabio."

I forced a small smile on my lips after hearing Don's words. However, I wasn't as naive as he thought.

The warm gush of blood from between my thighs during the explosion had already told me everything I needed to know. At the very least, I knew that my baby could not be saved anymore.

And as for Fabio, I knew that he would never come.

As if to prove my point, the Soldato that Don sent suddenly returned alone to report. He kept his head lowered and didn't dare to look Don in the eyes.

"Where is he?" Don asked with a frown on his face, sounding obviously displeased.

The Soldato's voice trembled as he replied, "Don Romero, Fabio… refused to return. He said, 'That's such a terrible script. Tell the actress to stop bothering me'..."

The Soldato was practically bent over 90 degrees as sweat kept dripping down his forehead.

I knew that Fabio's words had to have been a lot more cruel and harsher than what the Soldato said—he just probably didn't dare to quote Fabio word for word.

After all, Reina had been slandering me for a long time, and now, Fabio always thought that all of my pain and suffering were nothing more than just an act to try and get his attention.

In my past life, when I begged him for help, he accused me of coveting the position of the Underboss's wife.

Now, when Don told him to return, he said that I was just putting on an act.

If he only cared about Reina now, then what was the point of his pursuing me so relentlessly in the first place?

Sadness and anger rose up within me. I cocked my head to the side and coughed up even more blood.

Juan's face turned somber.

"Don, Mrs. Lopez is in critical condition now! Her life can't be saved just by medicine alone if there's nobody who can trigger her will to live!"

Don's gaze landed on my pale face. He couldn't suppress the fire in his chest anymore.

He took out the encrypted phone, the one only accessible to a select few, and slammed it into the Soldato's hand. His voice was as cold as ice as he said, "Use this to call Fabio.

"Nobody in the Famiglia will fail to recognize my number. If he still refuses to come over, then execute him as a traitor!"

Don was truly furious this time.

He was usually very heavily guarded, yet, in this situation, not a single Guardia Del Corpo was with him.

I had then risked my life to save him, but he wasn't even able to get my husband to come back.

This wasn't just negligence anymore. It was tantamount to a blatant challenge to Don's authority!

I was hurriedly rushed into a VIP ward at the hospital, kept alive by strong medication and medical equipment, awaiting further surgery.

When the Soldato spoke again, I was still half-conscious, but I managed to hear him anyway.

"Don Romero, Mr. Lopez still refused to return. But… He sent an assistant over instead."

I forced myself to open my eyes and saw Reina's personal assistant, Ana Rodriguez.

Ana used to be my personal assistant.

However, when I was pregnant, Reina bribed her into sabotaging my car brakes, and the accident that happened afterward nearly killed me.

Luckily, the paramedics appeared just in time, and I managed to survive.

I hadn't wanted to forgive this traitor. Just as I was about to punish her, Reina stopped me.

I still remembered that day like it was yesterday.

Reina wrapped her hands around Fabio's arm and scolded me in a righteous voice.

"How could you be so unreasonable, Sirena? Ana doesn't even know how to drive. How could she possibly know how to sabotage your car brakes?

"You can't convince me that you didn't orchestrate this entire accident by yourself. Even if you wanted to risk your life to win Fabio's attention back, you should never have tried dragging Ana into this!"

Then, she turned to Fabio and said in a soft voice, "Fabio, why don't we let Ana be my personal assistant instead? I won't get mad at her for ridiculous reasons, unlike someone else here."

Six months later, the Sicil City sun was still as blinding as ever.I stood before a fresh tombstone in the Famiglia cemetery in a long, black velvet dress. There wasn't a name engraved into the tombstone. Instead, there was just a line of words there."For the angel I never met."I set down a bouquet of white lilies before the tombstone, tracing the cold marble with my fingers. The hole in my heart hadn't fully healed, but at least it wasn't bleeding anymore.Time healed all wounds.Steady footsteps sounded behind me. I knew who it was without having to turn around to look.A warm suit jacket was draped over my shoulders."It's a little windy out here," Don Romero said, his voice coming from above my head.I pulled the jacket smelling familiarly of cigars closer around me. The scent was soothing and comforting, making me feel relaxed."There's news from the sulphur mines," he said, handing me a document in a voice as calm as if he were just talking about the weather.I flip

It was a rainy night when Don Romero and I arrived at Perez Steakhouse.A black Lincoln rolled to a stop at the door, and we both got out without any Guardie Del Corpo with us.We pushed the door open. The restaurant had been cleared, leaving only a single table in the center, where the Don of our rival Famiglia, Rafael Aguilar, and his Underboss were seated.Rafael was in the midst of chomping down a massive rare steak in a greedy manner. The Underboss stopped us and said, "Kindly cooperate with us for a full-body search."Don opened his arms, allowing himself to be searched. After confirming that there was nothing wrong with him, the Underboss looked at me next.Rafael wiped away the grease on his lips and let out a greasy laugh."I will search the lady myself."Don's eyes turned cold. He was just about to take action when I held his hand back.I walked forward expressionlessly and let Rafael smack my outer coat however he wanted with his burly hands. The look in his eyes

I turned to the two Soldati standing at the doorway, waiting for my orders. They were the people that La Famiglia specifically appointed to handle "trash", and they wore black masks on their faces while holding a heavy tool box in their hands."Send Fabio and Reina to the sulphur mines in the south of Sicil City."Fabio and Reina both gasped loudly as soon as they heard me mention the sulphur mines.Only disgraced Mafioso who had committed terrible crimes and gamblers unable to repay their debts were sent to the sulphur mines to work. That place was a true hell on earth, with high temperatures, toxic fumes, and endless, relentless, hard labor."No! Sirena, you can't do this to me! I am your husband!" Fabio screamed in despair."Ex-husband," I said, correcting him. "Also, since Ms. Digiorno loves acting so much, I'm sure that she will thoroughly enjoy putting on a good show in the sulphur mines. I believe that the workers there would be thrilled to have such a beautiful woman enter

The air in the basement room was foul, the stench of rust, mold, and a nauseatingly sweet odor mixing and mingling in the air."No… That's impossible!" Reina screamed, grabbing the bars with an even harder grip. She didn't even realize it when her nails cracked."I'm innocent! That bitch Ana was lying! She was jealous of me! Sirena, you can't listen to that crazy woman!"I stood outside the cage with a thick, black cashmere coat draped around my shoulders. Don had purposely had someone deliver it to me to ward off the cold in the basement.I looked at Reina like she was a rat thrashing helplessly in a trap."Ana is not a crazy woman. The interrogation records have made that very clear," I said, bringing out a sheaf of blood-stained documents from the coat pocket and throwing them into her cage. The papers fluttered down by Reina's feet. It was filled with tiny writing describing everything, how she had been secretly contacting the enemy Famiglia, phone call logs, and financial tr

Don watched Fabio and Reina hurling the blame at each other with disgust in his eyes.He withdrew his gun and beckoned to his men.A few burly Soldati immediately rushed in and grabbed Fabio and Reina, yanking them to their feet like they were nothing."Take them into the interrogation room. I'm going to interrogate them myself."Don then walked to the door, paused, and turned to look back at me."Sirena Cabrera, you are the Consigliere, so I will give you the authority to handle this. You will determine their fate once you've recovered enough from your injuries."I watched as Fabio and Reina were dragged away, realizing that I didn't feel pleased or victorious as I thought I would. My child was dead. Not even killing them could ever bring my child back to life.I worked with the doctors over the next few days for my treatment, and Don would come and visit me every day.He brought me news, saying that the terrorist attack that day hadn't been a coincidence. Rather, the enemies

Fabio's hands froze mid-air, the gun still pointed at my temple. However, his neck slowly and haltingly turned to the side like a rusty gear. When he finally saw who was at the door, he felt as though all of the blood had been drained from his body. His arrogant face instantly turned a deathly pale color."D-Don Romero?"The gun slid to the floor with a loud clang."W-What are you doing here?"Reina still hadn't grasped the gravity of the situation. She had never seen this legendary man who supposedly had the entire underworld of Sicil City under his control. To her, he was just a no-name Pandillero in dirty, bloody clothing with a murderous aura about him.She scoffed and turned up her nose at him in disgust, still wrapping her hands around Fabio's arm affectionately as she complained, "Who's this man, Fabio? Why is he bloody all over? He's so bloody disgusting."Don't tell me that he's another one of Sirena's actors as well."A loud slap echoed across the ward.It was none
