Chapter 4

Autor: Dusky Clouds
How could there be a woman as insane as Brandy? She was over forty and had spent twenty years pretending she was a baby.

I thought about how Jason had enabled her… Most of the blame lay with him.

Raymond flooded me with texts all night. I didn't answer any of them.

His last text came at three in the morning.

[I now know that my family isn't normal, but I can't leave her yet. Give me some time.]

I read it five times, then locked my phone.

-

At eight the next morning, pounding on my front door woke me up.

"Open the door, thief! Open the door for Dee Dee!"

Brandy's voice pierced the door, and her pounding triggered every sound-activated light in the building. I rubbed my eyes, got up, and looked through the peephole.

She stood there with her head raised, fierce and determined.

I took a deep breath and opened the door.

As soon as she saw me, she charged inside and smacked me in the face with a stack of papers.

"You stole company documents! My husband asked Dee Dee to keep those secrets safe! You're a corporate spy!"

The pages scattered across the floor. Several nearly cut my eyes.

I looked down. These weren't secrets; they were ordinary copies of meeting minutes without even the company's official stamp.

"Are you done?" I asked calmly.

"Dee Dee isn't making a fuss!" she shrieked, stomping her feet. "You're a thief! Dee Dee will call the police and have you arrested!"

"Then call them."

I spoke quietly, but she stopped as if she was choked.

Instead, I took out my phone and called the police in front of her. "Hello. Someone is falsely accusing me of stealing confidential business documents. Please send an officer..."

She lunged for my phone. I simply stepped back, and she fell across the doorway.

That was when Jason and Raymond arrived just then. They were both wearing suits and had rushed over from the office. Their faces were equally grim.

Jason saw the papers scattered across the floor and his wife lying there crying, his head throbbing. He roared for the first time in a long time. "What are you up to now?!"

Brandy scrambled up and threw herself at him. "She stole things! Look, honey! She scattered the company secrets everywhere!"

Raymond walked forward and picked up the papers. His expression darkened as he flipped through them. "Mom, these are just the minutes from last week's meeting. They aren't even classified."

"If Dee Dee says they're company secrets, then they're company secrets!" Brandy screamed.

"Stop talking!" For the first time, Raymond shouted at his mother. "She's our business partner! Why would she need anything from you? The entire project is a partnership with her family's company. How could she steal documents for a project her own company is part of? Besides, you accused her of stealing these papers, but you're the one who brought them here."

Brandy shrank back. Her lips trembled, and tears still clung to her face.

I stepped away from the doorway, bent down, and picked up the remaining papers one by one. After stacking them neatly, I spoke.

"Maybe you're the one who stole company secrets."

Brandy raised her head up suddenly and glared at me. She lunged at me again, but Jason managed to catch her wrist.

His face went from red with anger to pale. He stared at the woman who had spent twenty years crying, and his voice came out hoarse.

"Make one more scene, and I'll divorce you. Raymond will cut ties with you, too."

"This is..." Brandy started with her soft voice. "Dee... I… I made these yesterday. Take them home and try them."I accepted the package and opened it. Inside were several homemade cookies. They were slightly burned and the shapes were uneven, but I could tell she had shaped each one with care."You made these?" I asked."Yes." Brandy lowered her head and rubbed the toe of her shoe against the floor. "The therapist told Dee Dee to find something to do... No, the therapist told me to find something to do, so I started learning to bake. These didn't turn out well. They're burned. You don't have to eat them if they taste bad..." Her voice grew quieter as she retreated into her own shell again.I took a bite of one. It was a little hard and too sweet, but edible. "It's decent." Brandy looked up, her eyes brightening. Then she quickly lowered her gaze, unable to hide the small smile on her lips. Raymond watched without interrupting, but the relief on his face was impossible to m

Life kept moving forward. Then one day near the end of September, Dawn cursed under her breath again and held out her phone. "Your ex-boyfriend's family is in the financial news again."I took the phone and read the headline.[Smith Group President Jason Smith Steps Down, Son Raymond Smith Named CEO.]The article said Jason was stepping back for health reasons and handing day-to-day operation of the company to Raymond immediately.Dawn clicked her tongue. "Your ex is a domineering CEO now.""He's not a domineering CEO," I said as I rolled my eyes before handing back her phone. "He…just had a hard life."Despite what I said, I texted Raymond that evening. [I saw the news.]He replied quickly. [Dad handed the whole company to me. He said he wants to focus on something else.]I asked: [What's that?] Two minutes passed before his answer came. [He wants to take my mother abroad for a while. They haven't decided where yet, but he said he'll stay with her while she receives treatme

About a week later, work resumed on the Smith Group project affected by the leak.Raymond and his team stayed up four nights straight to prepare a new proposal. Because of the client's relationship with Jason, they received a second chance. That day, I was meeting a client at a cafe downstairs from Smith Group. When the meeting ended and I stepped outside, I saw Raymond leaving through a side door.He wore a lightweight blue-gray jacket and carried a bag of takeout. He stopped when he saw me, then smiled. "Why are you here?""I was meeting a client earlier," I said as I glanced at the bag. "Is that your lunch?""I don't have time for a proper lunch. There's going to be a board meeting this afternoon, and Dad wants me to sit in," Raymond said.He then raised his bag. "How about we share a bit? There are benches in the park nearby."I checked my watch. I had half an hour before two. I nodded and said, "Sure."We sat on a bench in the small park. Raymond opened the bag and took

"You... You brought it when you visited." Brandy avoided my eyes and stared at the marble floor. "Dee Dee didn't eat it. You can have it back."I held the box, unsure what to say. After standing there for two seconds, Brandy reached into the canvas bag again and pulled out an envelope. She pushed it toward me. Inside was about five hundred dollars in cash. "Well... My husband said the other gifts you bought were very expensive." Her voice became weaker and weaker. "Dee Dee doesn't have much money. This is the allowance I saved. It's to pay you back..."I looked at the money and the box of dried mushrooms. The whole situation felt absurd."You don't need to repay me." I pushed the envelope back into her hands. "I'll take the mushrooms. Keep the money."Brandy clutched the envelope and stood there helplessly. She opened her mouth, nearly called herself "Dee Dee" again, then bit her lower lip."How did you get here?" I asked."By a cab," She said."Does Raymond know you left?" I

I was a little stunned as I heard Raymond's words. "Your father gave you full authority?""Yeah," Raymond said. "He said he spent all these years focused on taking care of my mother and let the company suffer. From now on, he'll take care of her, and I'll take care of the company."The setting sun shone through the hallway, casting warm light across his handsome face when he was saying that. I glanced at him, then looked away."Then do your best," I said as I turned toward the elevator."Fran," he called from behind me.I did not turn, but I slowed."After I clean up this mess," his voice carried down the hall, "I'll try to win you back the right way."I stepped into the elevator. As the doors closed, I saw him through the narrowing gap, standing there and waving.Over the next two weeks, I never contacted Raymond first, but he sent me messages every few days. I read every one. Most of the time, I replied with an [Okay] or a [Got it.]Once, Dawn leaned over to peek at my pho

The words on the screen on the printed pages were clear for all to see. The other person had asked: [Can you take a clearer picture of the numbers in the upper left corner?]Brandy had replied: [Dee Dee isn't good at taking pictures. Just use that already.] Then, it was followed by a string of cutesy reaction images. No one in the office spoke.Brandy jumped up and suddenly rushed toward the door.Raymond moved quickly and blocked her. She staggered to a stop, and her knees buckled before he caught her arm."Mom." Raymond sighed. "There's no use in running away."Brandy slumped against him and burst into tears. "Dee Dee made a mistake... Dee Dee made a big mistake... Please don't abandon Dee Dee..."Raymond closed his eyes but kept hold of her.Meanwhile, Jason walked around the desk and stopped in front of Brandy. He watched her until her hoarse wailing faded into broken sobs. Then he bent down, helped her up, and guided her back to the couch with both hands on her shoulde
