Chapter 3

Author: Tomato Scramble
The next day at noon, Dad held my hand as we took the long way to Old Stone Bridge, deliberately avoiding the riverfront where Derek had ordered us to meet him.

The bridge was almost deserted, with only the occasional scooter passing by.

Just as we reached the middle, a desperate scream came from below.

"Help! Somebody help!"

I looked down.

A middle schooler with a backpack was thrashing wildly in the deep water, splashing frantically. He looked like he was in serious trouble.

Almost at once, people seemed to appear out of nowhere, surrounding us within seconds.

"Oh, my God! Someone's drowning!"

A heavyset woman with tightly curled hair shoved her way to the front and pointed at the river.

Then she turned to Dad.

Her eyes locked onto him, and a calculating gleam flashed in them.

"Wait... isn't that the heartless bus driver?"

Brenda Sullivan screeched at the top of her lungs.

"You left someone to drown last time, and now there's a boy right in front of you! You're still not going to save him?"

The crowd erupted.

"That's him? That scumbag from the video?"

"Well, look who it is. Let's see how he gets out of this one!"

Dad went pale.

He stared down at the dark water below, and the terror of nearly drowning came rushing back.

His whole body began to shake uncontrollably. His teeth chattered.

"I... I can't get in the water..."

He took a step back, unable to hide the fear in his voice.

Then he grabbed a life ring from the bridge railing and hurled it toward the boy.

"Grab it! Grab the life ring!"

It landed right beside him.

But then something strange happened.

Instead of reaching for it, the boy kept thrashing around.

"Help! I can't reach it!"

He kept ducking his head underwater and crying out as his body slowly sank lower.

"What good is throwing him a ring if he can't reach it?" Brenda snapped.

She jabbed a finger in Dad's face, spittle flying as she yelled.

"You're a grown man! Get in there and pull him out!

"If you won't get in there and redeem yourself, we'll throw you in ourselves! Maybe your life can save his!"

She reached for Dad's collar.

By then, the crowd was completely worked up.

Someone snatched another life ring from Dad's hands and threw it to the ground.

Someone else shoved him from behind, trying to force him over the railing.

"Jump! Jump!"

"You should pay for what you did! Get in there and save that boy!"

A hard shove sent Dad stumbling forward. Half his body pitched over the railing.

"Dad!"

I screamed and threw myself at him, wrapping both arms around his leg.

"Let him go! My dad can't swim anymore!"

"Get out of the way, you little liar!"

Brenda grabbed me by the hair and threw me aside.

I hit the pavement hard, my head spinning. My knee scraped against the concrete, leaving a small smear of blood.

I didn't have time to care about the pain.

I lunged forward and bit down on Brenda's wrist. Out of the corner of my eye, I caught sight of the water below.

And that was when I noticed something was wrong.

The boy looked like he was sinking, but the water around him was far too calm.

There was none of the violent churning you'd expect from someone actually drowning.

He was exhaling bubbles at a steady rate.

Even stranger, once he reached a certain depth, his body stopped sinking. He just hovered there.

That wasn't how a drowning person behaved.

This was another setup.

Another carefully planned death trap designed to force Dad into the river and get him killed.

"Stop pushing! I'll go! I'll go!"

Dad's eyes reddened when he saw what they were doing to me.

Fighting through the trauma and terror the river had left him with, he reached into the toolbox beside him and pulled out the thick rope he'd prepared the night before.

It was that time of year again, when families visited the graves of loved ones.Around this time in my last life, Grandma would take me to the two lonely graves by the river and lay flowers there. She would cry and murmur over and over, "If only I hadn't taken you to the river that day. If only I hadn't let your dad go save that man."After paying her respects, she'd crouch beside the graves, unable to bring herself to leave. But in this life, everything was different.Dad had quit his job as a bus driver. His work in drowning prevention and safe rescue had caught the attention of a major local company, which recruited him as its safety manager. His salary tripled. He had every weekend off and even received holiday bonuses.Mom didn't have to work three jobs anymore, either. She quit the backbreaking job at the textile mill and used their savings to lease a small storefront just outside our apartment complex, where she opened a neighborhood convenience store. The shelves were always ne

After the case was finally over, life wasn't the same anymore.Between the police report and the nonstop media coverage, Dad became known all over the city as the "hero bus driver."Several major creator management agencies came knocking, leaving a stack of business cards on our coffee table. They were throwing around six-figure offers, all hoping to turn Dad into a livestream shopping host. One sharply dressed agent sat on our couch and slid a thick contract across the coffee table, leaning forward eagerly."Mr. Carter, all you have to do is go live and talk about what it was like being falsely accused."With all the attention you're getting, you'd go viral instantly!"Dad didn't even open it.He stood, walked to the door, and held it open."I didn't save anyone to get famous online."The agent opened his mouth to argue, but Dad had already picked up the gift basket he'd brought and pressed it back into his arms."And I'm not turning my family's scars into content just so you can cash

Six months later.Superior Court, Courtroom 3.Every seat in the gallery was taken, and a row of reporters with cameras lined the hallway outside.Derek Lawson stood at the defense table in jail-issued clothing, his hands restrained in front of him.He was almost unrecognizable. He'd lost so much weight that his cheekbones jutted out, his eyes were sunken, and deep hollows had formed in his cheeks. There was no trace left of the arrogance he'd shown at the river.Still, he refused to admit what he'd done."Your Honor, I'm innocent!"Derek's face was a mess of tears and snot."I admit I staged the drowning for views."But it was just a prank. I was only trying to make it more dramatic!"I never meant to kill Michael Carter!"Brenda brought that knife herself. I didn't even know she had it!"His defense attorney rose and argued that Derek had never intended to kill Michael, pushing for a lesser charge. He spoke for more than ten minutes, citing case after case and laying out his argument

News of Derek's arrest at the train station hadn't even spread yet when the rest of his crew started stirring up trouble online. They edited together footage of the police pinning Brenda down on the bridge, added dramatic, heroic-sounding music, and posted it under a sensational title:[Derek Tried to Do the Right Thing - Now Thugs and Corrupt Cops Are Coming After Him!]The moment the video went up, his rabid followers went wild. They flooded every major platform with posts and even swarmed the police department's official account with angry comments.[Free Derek! Then he shot to his feet, grabbed his backpack, and swept every hard drive and USB drive on the table into it.He booked the first available train out of state, planning to flee that night....Under the harsh overhead light in the interrogation room, Brenda's face looked ghostly pale. She was still holding out, insisting it had all been "just a prank video to scare him."Officer Cooper slapped the folding knife down on the table."Brenda, you know how much time you could get for reckless endangerment, right?"And then there's this knife..."He tapped the nick in the blade with the tip of his pen."We

The cruiser doors flew open.Officer Cooper led several officers in full tactical gear onto the bridge, cutting through the cloud of white powder."Police! Nobody move!"The command stopped everyone cold.Brenda's eyes were red and watering from the extinguisher powder. She bent down, fumbling for the folding knife she'd dropped. Before she could reach it, a black boot pinned the blade to the pavement."You're going after the wrong people!" Brenda cried as she dropped to the ground and started making a scene."That crazy little girl sprayed us with a fire extinguisher! We were only trying to help!"Officer Cooper didn't bother arguing with her. He twisted Brenda's arm behind her back and pinned her to the ground.A pair of handcuffs clicked around her wrists.Just then, a phone slipped out of her loose sleeve. The screen was hot to the touch, and the live chat was still racing across it.[Why did the screen go black?
