I was only seven when my dad, Michael Carter, jumped into the river to save a drowning man. I was still playing in the sand on the riverbank. By the time a crowd had gathered and Dad was pulled from the water, his body had turned blue. He wasn't breathing. And the grown man Dad had risked his life to save? He swam back to shore on his own, shook off the water, muttered, "Just my luck," and walked away. Mom never smiled again after that. She worked three jobs to keep our family afloat. A year later, she collapsed from exhaustion at the textile mill and never woke up. Every spring, Grandma took me to visit their graves. She would cry and say the same thing every year. "If only I hadn't taken you to play by the river that day." Then I opened my eyes, and I was seven again. Dad was pulling off his jacket and tossing it to me. He pointed at the figure struggling in the river. "Stay right here, Mia. Dad's going to save him." The next second, I darted past him and jumped into the river. "Dad. "I can't swim."

It was that time of year again, when families visited the graves of loved ones.Around this time in my last life, Grandma would take me to the two lonely graves by the river and lay flowers there. She would cry and murmur over and over, "If only I hadn't taken you to the river that day. If only I hadn't let your dad go save that man."After paying her respects, she'd crouch beside the graves, unable to bring herself to leave. But in this life, everything was different.Dad had quit his job as a bus driver. His work in drowning prevention and safe rescue had caught the attention of a major local company, which recruited him as its safety manager. His salary tripled. He had every weekend off and even received holiday bonuses.Mom didn't have to work three jobs anymore, either. She quit the backbreaking job at the textile mill and used their savings to lease a small storefront just outside our apartment complex, where she opened a neighborhood convenience store. The shelves were always ne

After the case was finally over, life wasn't the same anymore.Between the police report and the nonstop media coverage, Dad became known all over the city as the "hero bus driver."Several major creator management agencies came knocking, leaving a stack of business cards on our coffee table. They were throwing around six-figure offers, all hoping to turn Dad into a livestream shopping host. One sharply dressed agent sat on our couch and slid a thick contract across the coffee table, leaning forward eagerly."Mr. Carter, all you have to do is go live and talk about what it was like being falsely accused."With all the attention you're getting, you'd go viral instantly!"Dad didn't even open it.He stood, walked to the door, and held it open."I didn't save anyone to get famous online."The agent opened his mouth to argue, but Dad had already picked up the gift basket he'd brought and pressed it back into his arms."And I'm not turning my family's scars into content just so you can cash

Six months later.Superior Court, Courtroom 3.Every seat in the gallery was taken, and a row of reporters with cameras lined the hallway outside.Derek Lawson stood at the defense table in jail-issued clothing, his hands restrained in front of him.He was almost unrecognizable. He'd lost so much weight that his cheekbones jutted out, his eyes were sunken, and deep hollows had formed in his cheeks. There was no trace left of the arrogance he'd shown at the river.Still, he refused to admit what he'd done."Your Honor, I'm innocent!"Derek's face was a mess of tears and snot."I admit I staged the drowning for views."But it was just a prank. I was only trying to make it more dramatic!"I never meant to kill Michael Carter!"Brenda brought that knife herself. I didn't even know she had it!"His defense attorney rose and argued that Derek had never intended to kill Michael, pushing for a lesser charge. He spoke for more than ten minutes, citing case after case and laying out his argument

News of Derek's arrest at the train station hadn't even spread yet when the rest of his crew started stirring up trouble online. They edited together footage of the police pinning Brenda down on the bridge, added dramatic, heroic-sounding music, and posted it under a sensational title:[Derek Tried to Do the Right Thing - Now Thugs and Corrupt Cops Are Coming After Him!]The moment the video went up, his rabid followers went wild. They flooded every major platform with posts and even swarmed the police department's official account with angry comments.[Free Derek! Punish the heartless bus driver!][Even the cops have been bought off! Is there any justice left?]For a while, the backlash surged again. It looked like Dad was about to be hit with another wave of online harassment.Mom stared at the flood of hateful comments on her phone, wringing her hands anxiously."Mia, look at this. What are we supposed to do?"How can they still twist the truth like this?"I picked up an orange from
