POV: Dr. Clara Bennett

The ballroom was so silent you could hear the soft fizzing of spilled champagne soaking into the heavy carpet.

Beside me, Harrison’s body went rigid. His hand dropped from my waist, his knuckles turning stark white as he gripped his glass so tightly I thought the crystal would shatter in his palm.

“Tristan…” Harrison gasped, his usual smooth, controlled voice cracking down the middle. “You… you were buried three years ago.”

Tristan took a deliberate step into the room. His polished leather shoes clicked against the hardwood floor with a slow, agonizing cadence. He didn’t look at the crowd of frozen high-society onlookers. He didn’t look at his cousin, Harrison.

His stormy gray eyes were fixed entirely on me.

“Reports of my death were severely exaggerated,” Tristan said. His voice was a deep, low baritone that vibrated through the quiet room, carrying an edge of cold steel that sent a shiver straight down my spine. “It turns out, Harrison, I had a very talented doctor.”

My pulse spiked wildly. My hand instinctively twitched behind my back, hiding the sparkling diamond ring Harrison had placed on my finger just moments ago.

Tristan remembered.

He was the wounded stranger from Trauma One. The man whose blood had soaked through my surgical gown on that bitter winter night. The man I had declared dead to save his life.

Harrison stepped forward, shielding me with his arm, though I could see a faint tremor in his shoulders. “Tristan, if this is a joke…”

“Does it look like a joke?” Tristan interrupted smoothly, unbuttoning his dark wool coat to reveal the flawless cut of his charcoal suit. He moved with an effortless, predatory grace, completely commanding the room without raising his voice. “I came to reclaim what belongs to me. Starting with my seat at Sterling Logistics.”

Low, excited whispers immediately broke out among the wealthy guests. Photographers began flashing lights, desperate to capture the resurrection of Chicago’s most powerful heir.

“This is a private event,” Harrison hissed, stepping closer to Tristan, his voice dropping into a dangerous, harsh murmur. “You walk in here after three years of playing dead, ruining my engagement."

“Your engagement?” Tristan’s eyes flicked to Harrison’s face, a cold, dark smirk playing at the corner of his lips. He finally shifted his gaze to me, scanning my pale face and the trembling breath I was trying so hard to hide. “Ah. Forgive me, cousin. I didn’t realize you were using my absence to take my place in every aspect of life.”

“Clara is my fiancée,” Harrison said sharply, grabbing my hand and pulling me slightly behind him. “She has nothing to do with you or family business.”

Tristan looked at Harrison’s hand wrapped around mine. The smirk vanished from his face, replaced by an intense, dark shadow that made the air in the room feel suffocating.

“Is that so?” Tristan murmured.

He took three slow steps forward, closing the distance between us until he was standing directly in front of Harrison and me. Up close, the sheer size of him was overwhelming. He smelled of rain, expensive leather, and a faint hint of cedar wood. Up close, I could see a faint, faded scar running along the left side of his jawline, a permanent reminder of the night I held his life in my hands.

“Dr. Bennett,” Tristan said, addressing me directly for the first time. His voice softened just a fraction, a dark contrast to the hostility he projected toward Harrison. “It is a pleasure to meet you properly.”

My breath caught in my throat. I squeezed Harrison’s hand tightly, trying to keep my voice from shaking. “Mr. Sterling.”

“You look remarkably like an angel in cream silk,” Tristan said quietly, his gray eyes locking onto mine with an intensity that made my knees feel weak. “Though I suspect you are much tougher than you appear.”

Harrison squeezed my wrist tightly, his temper flaring. “That’s enough, Tristan. Leave now, or I will have security throw you out.”

“Security?” Tristan let out a low, dry laugh that sent chills down my arms. He glanced around the room at the security guards who were standing completely still, recognizing the true head of the Sterling family. “Harrison, you always did forget who built this empire. Enjoy your party. But do not get too comfortable in my chair… or with my things.”

Tristan gave me one last, lingering look, a glance that burned right through my skin, before turning on his heel and walking back out into the Chicago night, leaving a trail of complete chaos in his wake.

Harrison turned to me, his face red with suppressed rage, his hands trembling as he held my shoulders. “Clara, are you alright? Did he scare you?”

“I… I am fine,” I lied, my voice barely a whisper.

My head was spinning. The safe, quiet life I had spent three years building had just vanished in a single breath. Tristan Sterling was back; he knew who I was, and the war between him and Harrison had only just begun.

POV: Dr. Clara BennettI backed up against the cold brick wall of my apartment building, my breath rising in thick white plumes against the freezing air.“Were you following me?” I demanded, my heart slamming wildly against my ribs.“I was watching,” Tristan corrected softly. He took a single step forward, his tall frame blocking the biting wind off Lake Michigan and enveloping me in his shadow. “There is a difference.”“It’s a difference that makes you sound like a stalker,” I shot back, though my voice carried a betraying tremor.A faint, wicked smirk touched the line of his jaw before it vanished into the dark, intense look that seemed permanent on his face. POV: Dr. Clara BennettMy skin prickled where Tristan’s breath had touched it long after he stepped out of the administrative suite. He left as quietly as he had arrived, leaving Chief Miller starry-eyed over a signed three-million-dollar check and me standing in the center of the room with a pulse that refused to slow down.I spent the rest of my shift moving like a machine, trying to drown out the memory of his gray eyes. But every time I walked past the nurses' station, those three crates of white orchids served as a silent, elegant reminder: Tristan Sterling is watching.By seven in the evening, I stepped out of the hospital entrance into a driving sleet.A sleek black town car was idling at the curb. The rear door swung open, and Harrison stepped out into the freezing slush, holding a massive golf umbrella over his head. His tailored coat was pristine, but the shadows under his eyes were dark and bruised."Get in, Clara," he said, his tone clipped, missing its usual warm polish.

POV: Dr. Clara BennettI pushed the card deeper into my lab coat pocket, the heavy cardstock feeling like a hot coal against my hip.“Nobody sends three crates of exotic orchids and artisanal coffee to an ER without a reason, Clara,” Sophie said, her eyes narrowing in dark suspicion. “That is not ‘nobody’ money. That is ‘I buy the building’ money.”“It’s just an anonymous donor,” I lied smoothly, picking up a patient clipboard to avoid her gaze. “You know how high-profile trauma cases get. Some wealthy patient probably felt grateful.”“Uh-huh,” Sophie muttered, clearly not buying a single word. “Well, if your anonymous grateful donor turns out to be six-foot-two with stormy gray eyes and a billion dollars, make sure you ask him if he has a brother.”I shook my head, fighting off a sudden, betraying flush on my cheeks, and headed down the corridor toward Trauma Bay Two.For the next four hours, I buried myself in work. I stitched a deep laceration on a line cook’s forearm, set a fractu

POV: Dr. Clara BennettHarrison’s fingers gripped the steering wheel of his Mercedes so tightly his knuckles turned gray under the yellow streetlights of Lake Shore Drive. The silence inside the car was thick, heavy, and suffocating.“He’s bluffing,” Harrison muttered, his voice flat as he stared at the frozen asphalt ahead. “The board won’t listen to a dead man. I’ve run Sterling Logistics for three years. I brought the revenue up fifteen percent.”I turned my head to look at him, keeping my arms crossed over my silk gown. “Harrison, if he has proof of who he is”“I don’t care who he is!” Harrison snapped, slamming his palm against the leather wheel.I flinched back against the passenger seat.Immediately, Harrison let out a heavy breath, pulling the car to a stop at a red light. He reached across the console, wrapping his fingers around my hand. His touch was cold, precise, and tight.“Forgive me, Clara,” he said softly, smoothing his thumb over the giant diamond on my ring finger.

POV: Dr. Clara BennettThe ballroom exploded into absolute bedlam the second the double doors clicked shut behind Tristan. Society reporters swarmed Harrison like relentless flies, shouting questions about board seats, stock shares, and legal declarations.Harrison handled them with practiced, icy grace, but the vein pulsing hard in his temple gave him away. He was terrified.“Clara,” Harrison whispered tightly, leaning down to press a stiff, formal kiss to my cheek. “Wait for me in the private lounge down the hall. I need to handle the press and call our legal team before this ruins the morning headlines.”“Of course,” I murmured, squeezing his arm gently. “Take your time.”I slipped away through the side exit, my heart hammering against my ribs with every step I took away from the noise. I bypassed the lounge and pushed open the heavy glass door leading out to the hotel’s private stone terrace. The icy Chicago air hit my bare shoulders like a splash of freezing water, instantly shoc
