POV: Dr. Clara Bennett

The ballroom exploded into absolute bedlam the second the double doors clicked shut behind Tristan. Society reporters swarmed Harrison like relentless flies, shouting questions about board seats, stock shares, and legal declarations.

Harrison handled them with practiced, icy grace, but the vein pulsing hard in his temple gave him away. He was terrified.

“Clara,” Harrison whispered tightly, leaning down to press a stiff, formal kiss to my cheek. “Wait for me in the private lounge down the hall. I need to handle the press and call our legal team before this ruins the morning headlines.”

“Of course,” I murmured, squeezing his arm gently. “Take your time.”

I slipped away through the side exit, my heart hammering against my ribs with every step I took away from the noise. I bypassed the lounge and pushed open the heavy glass door leading out to the hotel’s private stone terrace.

The icy Chicago air hit my bare shoulders like a splash of freezing water, instantly shocking the heat from my cheeks. Snowflakes drifted down lazily from the black sky, powdering the stone balustrade. I leaned against the railing, staring out at the glowing skyscrapers of the Loop, clutching my silk wrap tightly around my arms.

My hands were shaking. He is alive. The man whose heartbeat had vanished under my fingertips was standing on two feet, healthy, powerful, and dangerous.

“You’re going to catch pneumonia out here, Dr. Bennett.”

I gasped, spinning around so fast my heels skidded on the light dust of snow.

Tristan was stepping out from the shadows near the corner archway. He had tossed his heavy dark coat over one arm, his crisp white collar stark against the night. He walked toward me slowly, with the quiet, effortless confidence of a predator who knew I had nowhere left to run.

“Tristan,” I breathed, my back pressing against the cold stone railing. “You shouldn’t be out here. Harrison is looking for you.”

“Harrison couldn’t find his own footing if the floor wasn’t paved with my money,” Tristan said smoothly. He stopped just two feet away, closing the space between us until I had to tilt my head back to look into his face.

Up close, without the bright chandelier lights of the ballroom, his presence was overwhelming. He smelled of cold air, expensive tobacco, and rain.

“Why are you here?” I whispered, my eyes darting toward the glass doors behind him. “If anyone sees us…”

“Let them see,” Tristan interrupted, his voice dropping into a low, velvet purr that sent a shiver straight down my spine. “Three years ago, you saved my life in a dark basement. You gave me a second chance when my own blood paid men to put bullets in my chest.”

My breath hitched. “You knew… You knew Harrison sent those men?”

Tristan’s gray eyes darkened, a cold, lethal storm brewing behind them. “I knew the moment the first round tore through my side. Harrison wanted the family company, the title, and the power. But I didn’t expect him to take you.”

He reached out, his long, calloused fingers gently brushing a stray lock of dark hair away from my cold cheek. His touch was burning hot against my freezing skin. I meant to step back, but my feet felt rooted to the terrace floor.

“He offered me peace, Tristan,” I said, my voice trembling as I looked up at him. “I spent my whole life surrounded by chaos and instability. Harrison is safe.”

“Harrison is a wolf in a custom suit, Clara,” Tristan said softly, his thumb tracing the sharp line of my jaw with surprising tenderness. “He doesn’t love you. He collects pretty things that make him look respectable. He saw a brilliant, beautiful doctor who didn’t care about his money, and he claimed you as a trophy.”

“That’s not true,” I protested, though my own voice sounded weak to my ears.

Tristan leaned down, his face inches from mine, his stormy gray eyes searching my face with an intensity that made my pulse race out of control.

“I am back for what is mine,” Tristan whispered, his deep baritone vibrating through my chest. “I am going to take back my company. I am going to tear down everything Harrison built on my grave.”

He dropped his hand to my wrist, his thumb resting gently against my erratic pulse point. He felt every wild thud of my heart.

“And what about me?” I asked, my voice barely audible over the wind. “Am I just another piece of your war with him?”

Tristan lowered his head until his lips were hovering just above my ear, his warm breath fanning across my skin.

“You saved my life, Clara,” he murmured, his fingers tightening gently around my wrist. “That makes you mine to protect. Put his ring on if you must, but know this: I will never let him keep you.”

POV: Dr. Clara BennettI backed up against the cold brick wall of my apartment building, my breath rising in thick white plumes against the freezing air.“Were you following me?” I demanded, my heart slamming wildly against my ribs.“I was watching,” Tristan corrected softly. He took a single step forward, his tall frame blocking the biting wind off Lake Michigan and enveloping me in his shadow. “There is a difference.”“It’s a difference that makes you sound like a stalker,” I shot back, though my voice carried a betraying tremor.A faint, wicked smirk touched the line of his jaw before it vanished into the dark, intense look that seemed permanent on his face. He lifted a hand, h

  • Back from the Grave for His Bride   Chapter 7: The Pressure Gage

POV: Dr. Clara BennettMy skin prickled where Tristan’s breath had touched it long after he stepped out of the administrative suite. He left as quietly as he had arrived, leaving Chief Miller starry-eyed over a signed three-million-dollar check and me standing in the center of the room with a pulse that refused to slow down.I spent the rest of my shift moving like a machine, trying to drown out the memory of his gray eyes. But every time I walked past the nurses' station, those three crates of white orchids served as a silent, elegant reminder: Tristan Sterling is watching.By seven in the evening, I stepped out of the hospital entrance into a driving sleet.A sleek black town car was idling at the curb. The rear door swung open, and Harrison stepped out into the freezing slush, holding a massive golf umbrella over his head. His tailored coat was pristine, but the shadows under his eyes were dark and bruised."Get in, Clara," he said, his tone clipped, missing its usual warm polish.

POV: Dr. Clara BennettI pushed the card deeper into my lab coat pocket, the heavy cardstock feeling like a hot coal against my hip.“Nobody sends three crates of exotic orchids and artisanal coffee to an ER without a reason, Clara,” Sophie said, her eyes narrowing in dark suspicion. “That is not ‘nobody’ money. That is ‘I buy the building’ money.”“It’s just an anonymous donor,” I lied smoothly, picking up a patient clipboard to avoid her gaze. “You know how high-profile trauma cases get. Some wealthy patient probably felt grateful.”“Uh-huh,” Sophie muttered, clearly not buying a single word. “Well, if your anonymous grateful donor turns out to be six-foot-two with stormy gray eyes and a billion dollars, make sure you ask him if he has a brother.”I shook my head, fighting off a sudden, betraying flush on my cheeks, and headed down the corridor toward Trauma Bay Two.For the next four hours, I buried myself in work. I stitched a deep laceration on a line cook’s forearm, set a fractu

POV: Dr. Clara BennettHarrison’s fingers gripped the steering wheel of his Mercedes so tightly his knuckles turned gray under the yellow streetlights of Lake Shore Drive. The silence inside the car was thick, heavy, and suffocating.“He’s bluffing,” Harrison muttered, his voice flat as he stared at the frozen asphalt ahead. “The board won’t listen to a dead man. I’ve run Sterling Logistics for three years. I brought the revenue up fifteen percent.”I turned my head to look at him, keeping my arms crossed over my silk gown. “Harrison, if he has proof of who he is”“I don’t care who he is!” Harrison snapped, slamming his palm against the leather wheel.I flinched back against the passenger seat.Immediately, Harrison let out a heavy breath, pulling the car to a stop at a red light. He reached across the console, wrapping his fingers around my hand. His touch was cold, precise, and tight.“Forgive me, Clara,” he said softly, smoothing his thumb over the giant diamond on my ring finger.

POV: Dr. Clara BennettThe ballroom was so silent you could hear the soft fizzing of spilled champagne soaking into the heavy carpet.Beside me, Harrison’s body went rigid. His hand dropped from my waist, his knuckles turning stark white as he gripped his glass so tightly I thought the crystal would shatter in his palm.“Tristan…” Harrison gasped, his usual smooth, controlled voice cracking down the middle. “You… you were buried three years ago.”Tristan took a deliberate step into the room. His polished leather shoes clicked against the hardwood floor with a slow, agonizing cadence. He didn’t look at the crowd of frozen high-society onlookers. He didn’t look at his cousin, Harrison. His stormy gray eyes were fixed entirely on me.“Reports of my death were severely exaggerated,” Tristan said. His voice was a deep, low baritone that vibrated through the quiet room, carrying an edge of cold steel that sent a shiver straight down my spine. “It turns out, Harrison, I had a very talented d
