Chapter 4

Author: Anonymous
I lowered my eyes and touched the pocket over my chest. Inside was a ten-dollar bill. It was the same one Anna had placed in the plastic bucket.

I did not spend it. Even though that ten dollars could have bought me painkillers, I could not. It was the last connection between Anna and me.

From the moment I first saw Anna, I knew she was someone exceptional.

Over the past four years, I still caught pieces of news about her through other people's conversations and screens in public places even when I did not have a television or a phone.

She was doing great after she left me. In just four years, she had already become the CEO of a publicly traded company, openly displaying her love for Marvin as their wedding date drew closer.

I had thought that I would only be able to see Anna on television or in magazines for the rest of my life… Until I met her again a few days ago.

Seeing her after four years felt like a dream come true. The instant I saw her, all the longing I had suppressed for so long came rushing out.

I missed her terribly.

But...

I looked at my legs, then at the hot dogs in front of me, and gave a helpless, bitter smile. I quickly packed the hot dog skewers into a bag and handed them to the customer.

The customer took the bag, and his expression darkened at once. He snapped, "Look at this garbage! The hot dogs are all burnt! How am I supposed to eat this?!"

Before I could apologize, he threw the bag in my face and stormed off.

The hot skewers burned my skin, and the sharp wooden sticks scratched the corner of my eye.

Feeling the shocked stares of the pedestrians around me, I lowered my head and looked at the food scattered across the ground with an aching heart. I carefully bent down and struggled to pick them up, then cleaned the dust off them. Just as I was about to put the hot dog into my mouth, a hand knocked them from my grasp.

I looked up and saw Anna's tearful eyes.

I did not know what I had looked like to Anna that night when I appeared before her, but I knew what Anna looked like to me now. She was like an angel appearing in the darkness that was my life, bringing me salvation.

Yet, I could see my own reflection in her eyes. I was sitting in a filthy wheelchair, dressed in shabby clothes with messy hair, my body smelled of smoke and grease.

I simply looked too miserable.

Without thinking, I turned around and tried to escape, but I had forgotten for a moment there that I was now a crippled man. I fell heavily to the ground. Rough gravel cut into my palms, and my legs got trapped awkwardly in the wheelchair.

Anna wiped the tears from the corners of her eyes and helped me up. I sat in the wheelchair with my head lowered, not daring to look at her. The way she looked at me made me restless.

After a long silence, Anna finally sighed and said, "We haven't seen each other in four years. Have a cup of coffee with me."

"What are you saying? I'm not letting you leave me again!" Anna's voice suddenly came from the doorway, her face full of panic.Several police officers stood behind her.She hurried to my side and looked at me with worry. Only after confirming I was unharmed did she breathe a sigh of relief.Marvin forced a smile. "Anna, why are you here? I was just talking to Zephyr."He had just tried to hug Anna when she stepped back. The police restrained Marvin without another word. "Mr. Marvin Abbott, you're now a suspect in a case involving the sales of trade secrets. You're coming with us."Marvin screamed in terror. "I didn't!"Before the police took him away, Marvin shouted at Anna, "Anna, save me! Back then, you..."Before he could finish, the police covered his mouth.Anna looked at me uneasily. "Zephyr, let me explain."I cut her off. "I know. It wasn't you. But… I'm so tired. Marvin was right. I'll only be a burden to you. If you feel sorry for me, just send me a little money ev

I wanted to go back to the bridge where I lived after that, but he took me to a five-star hotel instead. Looking at the familiar decor, I became distracted. He then said, "Please think it over carefully."Before I could sort through any of it, Marvin asked to meet me.In an upscale cafe, he held his coffee and looked down at me. Then he suddenly smiled. "Zephyr, sometimes I really envy you."I looked at him in confusion.Marvin said, "Why did you get to force Anna to be yours back then and still win her heart? No matter how hard I tried all these years, her heart was still with you. Why didn't you just die?!"His words cut me deep and my chest ached terribly. So, without my knowing it, Anna had already fallen deeply in love with me.Marvin told me Anna's company had gone public, and thanks to the government's support, it would soon expand overseas. He was also the one who told me this was the most critical period for the company, yet the moment Anna learned I was in Harbor City,

After I had left without saying goodbye, my secretary and Anna both searched for me.She contacted everyone she could as if she had gone mad. She had spent huge amounts of money and searched every corner of the city, but she still could not find me.She even begged my enemy to tell her where I was. He made her serve drinks at a bar where customers groped her, and she was nearly assaulted.Fortunately, the police arrived in time.My secretary said Anna sat in the police station all night, watching security camera footage until she found the clip of me boarding the train.Only then did she finally sigh in relief. But she also cried all night. No matter how much she begged, the police would not tell her where I had gone. That was because I had used the last of my connections to hide my tracks completely. From then on, Anna stopped searching blindly and threw herself into making money. She took out her phone and made a call.Soon, my former secretary appeared in front of me. When he saw me, grief appeared in his eyes. Then he carefully stepped around me and stood in front of Anna.Anna pointed at me. "Take him away for now. Get him changed into something clean, then get a doctor to look at his legs."Joy flashed through my secretary's eyes when he heard her.Marvin looked at Anna in disbelief. "Anna?"Anna did not look at anyone as she said expressionlessly, "I'm not heartless. I can't stand seeing an innocent person being harassed like that. You don't need to be angry on my behalf either. I was the one who chose to be with Zephyr myself. It was a mutually-agreed arrangement."Seeing the pain on Marvin's face, Anna eventually sighed. " It's all in the past now. Something came up at the branch office. I have to go."After Anna left, Marvin gave me a cold look and left with the others.Once everyone was gone, my secretary's eyes reddened. "Sir…"I gave a bitte

Anna still wanted to say something, but the door leading into the private room opened.Marvin walked in with a crowd, holding a bouquet of roses in his hands. He looked at Anna with deep love and said, "Anna, I've waited for you for four years. Isn't it time you made us official?"Dozens of people gathered around Anna and Marvin, chatting and laughing. The heavy mood in the room was instantly lifted and the whole atmosphere loosened. "You still haven't proposed to Anna, Marvin? That's on you. You should have locked down someone as good as her a long time ago!"Marvin smiled happily. "We were both busy with our careers before. Besides, I should be the one to do it when it comes to a proposal. It's my fault for being too busy. I made her wait too long."Marvin's words were flawless, and everyone there praised their love. "You know what they say about letting it cook. You've stayed by Anna's side for so many years. Not just anyone can compare with that.""Exactly. Anna and Marvin are

Anna's face went pale when she heard my accusation. She immediately grabbed my hand anxiously. "Zephyr, I didn't!"I looked at her and said nothing. After the company collapsed, my secretary came to see me before he resigned. His usually calm face was full of regret. When he saw me, he apologized. "I'm sorry, Mr. Jackson. I can't stay with you anymore."I was not angry. If anyone owed someone an apology, it was me.After all, he still had a family to support. He had just married his girlfriend, and she had just gotten pregnant too. But he had lost his job because of me. Fortunately, I was able to use the last of my connections to arrange his next job for him. Before he left, he gave me a file. It showed that Anna and Marvin had entered my study. Then, the company's secrets were leaked the next day.I touched the file and said nothing. Then my enemy broke my legs, and I dragged myself to Anna's place, only to see her and Marvin gazing at each other tenderly. I sat in the nice cafe as the waiters passing by gave me quiet looks. I had grown used to that kind of contempt over the years, but I felt ashamed sitting across from Anna now.I clasped my hands uneasily as they were covered in calluses and cuts.Anna pushed the coffee toward me, and I quickly wa
