Chapter 3

Auteur: Wildfire Patch
I dragged my suitcase down the hallway toward the elevator.

"Henry!" Stella had barely taken two steps after me when Michael caught her by the sleeve. She stopped in her tracks and said, "You should head to the hotel first—I'll come find you later, Henry."

I accepted the lowest offer from the real estate agent once I reached the hotel and signed the listing agreement. The buyer even decided to pay in full and put down a deposit on the spot.

I suddenly received a message from Stella. "Have you arrived at the hotel? I'm worried about you being out there alone, so send me your location. I'll come find you."

I hesitated for a moment before finally sending her the hotel's address.

"I'll be there shortly, so stay in the room and wait for me."

I was suddenly reminded of the incident that happened during my junior year in university. I got stranded in the suburbs during a downpour and received that exact same message. Michael didn't care for Stella back then, and every time they ran into each other, they'd end up fighting over me.

Upon learning that the mountain road toward the suburb was closed, Michael stopped Stella, yelling, "Going out there now will get you killed!"

Stella shoved him aside and pushed through the rain for three straight hours. She was drenched from head to toe when she finally saw me. She wrapped her arms around me tightly, letting out all the worry she had been holding in.

That evening, Michael kept cursing Stella out as a lunatic during our ride home, but after that incident, he never once tried to convince me to break up with her again.

I stared at the message, especially the "wait for me" part, waiting from the dead of night until dawn.

It was the following morning, and I was startled awake by someone banging urgently on the door. "Open up, Henry!"

I had barely opened the door when several people pushed their way inside.

"Isn't it enough that you're clinging to Michael's wife? How dare you steal his wedding ring! Have you no shame at all?"

"Why are you wasting time talking to him? Search the place!"

I stood between them and the suitcase. "I'm calling the police if anyone touches anything in here."

"You actually have the nerve to call the police after stealing the wedding ring? Who do you think you're fooling here, Henry?"

Stella immediately stepped in when someone tried to reach for the suitcase. "That's enough! Henry would never steal anything!"

She then turned to me and said, "You should just let them look through it so that they won't have any reason to keep making things up, Henry."

I called the police and gave them the hotel address and room number.

Michael's expression shifted slightly. "We're all friends here, Henry. There's no need to bring the police into this—"

Before he could even finish speaking, Stella suddenly covered her mouth and bolted into the bathroom. She left the door ajar, so the sound of muffled dry heaving could still be heard from inside.

Stella gripped the edge of the sink, standing still for a moment.

Just then, a folded medical report slipped out of her pocket.

Michael rushed over and bent down to pick it up, causing the "stolen" wedding ring to slip right out of his pocket. He ignored the wedding ring completely, staring only at the words on the medical report—"Intrauterine pregnancy, eight weeks."

I was reminded of the incident two years ago after seeing the words "eight weeks" written on the medical report. I had to deal with a six-hour time difference when I learned from the doctor that Stella had miscarried.

I stayed on a video call with her all night until morning that day. I recalled how bloodshot her eyes were as she lay in her hospital bed, apologizing repeatedly. "I'm so sorry for not being able to save the baby, Henry…"

I could still hear those words in my head when Michael suddenly embraced Stella. He called out tremblingly as his eyes lit up with overwhelmed joy. "Stella…"

It wasn't until he remembered I was still there that the look of delight died in his eyes.

I held back my emotions as I picked up the wedding ring and handed it to her, wanting to see how she'd react. "I found the wedding ring."

Stella held onto Michael's hand, never letting go.

Having searched through the suitcase, the others walked over and said, "There's nothing in the suitcase—"

Upon spotting the wedding ring I was holding, they scoffed. "You even had the guts to claim that you didn't steal it, huh? You're caught red-handed this time, Henry!"

I looked toward the bedroom and found that the videotape Mom and Dad had left me was snapped in half, the magnetic tape tangled around their shoes.

It was the only video left of Mom and Dad before I turned seven years old. I got down on my knees to pick it up, but my hands were trembling so much that I couldn't even gather it up.

There was a sudden knock at the door. "Police. Open the door."

Stella shielded Michael behind her. She glanced at my trembling hands for a split second, then turned away. "Why don't we just forget about it since we've already found the wedding ring? I'll cover whatever damage was done to your stuff.

"I'm early in my pregnancy, while Nicole is still terribly ill. It won't do any of us any good to blow this up, so just tell the police that you accidentally took the wedding ring when you got drunk last night, alright, Henry?"

I tightened my fists after hearing what Joan said. "When is it happening?""Tomorrow morning."Despite everything, I still went to the hospital the following day.Stella sat against the wall at the end of the OB-GYN hallway, looking pale. She was still wearing her hospital wristband. She held two medical records—one from three years ago, the other from today. She instinctively stood when she saw me, but her body swayed from the lingering effects of the anesthesia.I almost reached out but stopped myself. "Is it over?"Stella lowered her head and looked at the medical record. "I chose to do it of my own accord. I'm not doing this to try and win you back."I remained silent.Stella handed me the medical records from three years ago again. "You stayed up all night with me back then. You even transferred 150 thousand dollars into the company account the moment you ended the video call. You barely slept, yet you still returned to the project site the following day." I couldn't aff

The guard asked, "Do you want me to let her in, Henry?"I held the documents tightly and replied, "I don't want to see her."Stella was completely drenched as she stood outside the iron gate. She looked at me through the heavy rain and said, "I just want to say a few things, Henry…"I stated flatly, "I don't want to hear what you have to say. You're pregnant. You should just head home, Stella."Stella tried to come closer, but the guard immediately blocked her path.I swiped my access card and headed straight into the office building, never once looking back.It was the following day when the guard dropped off a cardboard box. "Ms. Leach left this behind last night, Henry."I was about to send it back when I suddenly noticed the label attached to it—"The Sherwood Family Keepsakes."I had just set the cardboard box aside when my office phone suddenly rang. "I-It's me, Henry…"I instantly tightened my grip on the phone when I heard Michael's voice.Just then, the low rumble of

Henry's POVIt was barely dawn when the plane touched down at Maldoria. The PA system instructed passengers to take their carry-ons, but I stayed in my seat without moving. I only unfastened my seatbelt after the flight attendant came over and reminded me for the third time.In the past, I used to text Stella the second I landed to let her know I made it safely. Yet, at this moment, all that remained in our chat history was the last message Stella had sent me. "I'll be there shortly, so stay in the room and wait for me."I backed out of the conversation and walked out of the airport, dragging my suitcase behind me.Joan Zimmerman, the project manager, was waiting outside the terminal. She hurried over the moment she spotted me. "Welcome back to Maldoria, Henry."She reached for my suitcase, her eyes landing on the bandage around my hand. "What happened to your hand?""I cut myself while packing my stuff."She didn't ask any more questions. She just placed the hot coffee into my

Michael stepped in front of Stella. "We're having the wedding, Stella! We can always buy another house! We've already booked the venue, and the guests are already waiting for us!"Stella stared at the financial records on her phone. "Why was I kept in the dark about the 450 thousand dollars?"Upon hearing that, the employee from the finance department hesitated slightly before replying, "Mr. Sherwood asked us to keep it from you. He said you'd refuse the money if you knew about it, Ms. Leach."Stella noticed that the first transfer arrived on the same day the company ran out of funding. That night, Henry told her over video call that he was tied up with work, and barely minutes into the call, he'd slumped over his desk asleep. She had assumed he was just fed up with going through the tough times alongside her. She had no idea he had just finished a 16-hour workday. In the three years that followed, every time the company hit a financial squeeze, Henry would suddenly go missing in

Third-Person POVStella stared at her phone screen after Henry abruptly ended the call, her finger lingering over the redial option before putting her phone away. "He's probably just throwing another fit."Henry had never really brought himself to leave her over the past seven years, so she was sure this time would be no different.Joseph Lister, the real estate agent, laid out the property deed and the purchase agreement. "Mr. Sherwood sold this apartment well under market value, on the sole condition that the place be vacated today, Ms. Leach."Everyone in the living room instantly fell silent.Just then, the buyer gestured toward the wedding photo on the wall and bellowed, "You'd better be out by 11:00 am! If not, I'll call the police!"Michael's best man scoffed. "He's actually selling off the place because he couldn't get Stella, huh? That's low."Joseph looked over and asked solemnly, "What's wrong with Mr. Sherwood selling his own apartment? You're the ones using someone

Everything Stella said, no matter how she put it, was aimed at protecting Michael.Just then, the door swung open. Everyone immediately surrounded the police officers as they walked in. "That's the guy! He went after another man's wife and stole his wedding ring!"In the end, the police officers were held up at the entrance, recording everyone's account of the situation.Michael suddenly sighed and said, "That's enough—don't give Henry a hard time anymore."He then walked up to me, snatched the wedding ring out of my hand, and tossed it to the side. "The ring is yours."He was just about to step on Dad's face in the joint portrait as he said that.I instinctively reached out to protect it, causing my palm to slam right into the glass shards and for me to break out into a cold sweat right after.Michael took advantage of the moment to stumble backward on purpose, knocking a chair over and slamming hard onto the floor."Michael!"Everyone rushed forward. Stella shoved me aside
