Chapter 1

Author: Langley
When my daughter stood in front of me with open disgust on her face, demanding that I, Gavin Hale, apologize to their dear Malcolm Innes, I did not even glance at her. I picked up the teacup in front of me and took a slow, unhurried sip.

"Dad, if you don't apologize, we won't call you Dad anymore!"

"Then don't."

I no longer cared about this daughter of mine; one who would side with someone else over her own father.

I thought back to a time when she had been sick. I stayed at her bedside for three days and three nights, too consumed to eat or drink. When she recovered, I was the one who collapsed. It nearly killed me.

Later, wanting her to have real skills she could carry through life, I swallowed my pride and begged the country's most renowned arts instructor to take her on as a student and teach her music, painting and every classical discipline.

I also spent a long time pleading with Corinne Cavell before our daughter was finally granted access to the family's heir training.

I could say in good conscience that I had given her everything I had. However, the moment Malcolm appeared, everything changed.

Malcolm said the children were still young and should not be crushed under the weight of their studies. He encouraged my daughter, Elise Cavell, to get out more, spend time with kids her own age, and learn to relax.

Elise never went back to a single class. She spent her days following Malcolm around, shopping for clothes.

If that was the path she had chosen, I would not stand in her way.

After all, I was only a supporting character in this novel. My storyline had run its course, and the System confirmed that I had performed my role well. It had gone to negotiate a bonus on my behalf.

In two weeks at most, the System would bring me back to my original world.

I set the teacup down and glanced at her. I felt nothing.

Elise's face scrunched up with discomfort, and a flicker of panic passed through her eyes. In all the years she had been alive, I had never once refused her this directly.

However, the look was gone as quickly as it came. She tilted her chin up, triumphant, and began showing off the makeup and pretty dress Malcolm had bought her, even spinning in a circle right in front of me so I would not miss a thing.

"This is all from Malcolm. Doesn't it look nice?

"You never let me have any of this before. You said I was too young and that it'd ruin my focus. You worked me half to death with classes and lessons, and whenever I didn't listen, you'd smack my hands.

"You were always dragging me up on stage to perform in front of people. You treated me like something on display. You never once gave me any respect!"

The sheer absurdity of it made me laugh. Malcolm had probably coached her on every word.

I had been afraid that, with her being a girl, the Cavells would never take her seriously, and that she would drift through life and stumble into some careless marriage without ever knowing her own worth.

That was why I had taken her to dinners and social events from the time she was young, given her the chance to stand in front of a room and show people what she was capable of, and taught her how to carry herself.

However, after two gifts from Malcolm, she had decided all of it meant nothing.

Did she have any idea how much of myself I had poured into her?

I said nothing. Elise puffed out her cheeks in frustration.

"You don't even love me!

"Malcolm actually cares about me! He doesn't drag me out of bed at the crack of dawn to memorize stuff and do worksheets. He buys me new clothes, reads me bedtime stories and takes me to the amusement park. He's a thousand times the dad you'll ever be!

"Mom already said she wants Malcolm to move in, and that she's gonna divorce you!"

Elise grabbed the vase off the table and hurled it to the floor. It shattered and she stormed out.

Even though I had already made my peace with leaving this world behind, her words still left a bitter taste in my mouth.

The only reason I had married into the Cavell family in the first place was because I had fallen for Corinne, but now I felt nothing for her at all.Life after the divorce would be just as comfortable, so why should I not enjoy it on my own terms?Corinne stood frozen, staring at me for a long time. Finally, as though she were surrendering, she lowered her head and parted her pale lips."I'll agree to the divorce, but you have to promise that the children can see you at least once a week.""Once a week is too much. Once a month, at most."If I was being honest, I did not even want to agree to that. These two had gotten me killed. My instinct was to put as much distance between us as possible. However, I knew Corinne. If I refused to let her confirm with her own eyes that I was still alive, she was possessive enough to lock me up and never let me leave."Fine. Let's get it done."We went to file the divorce quietly, without telling anyone.Corinne was unusually generous for onc

I stayed where I was and focused on untying Malcolm's ropes, ignoring every word out of Corinne's mouth.Corinne stumbled toward me on unsteady legs. She looked like she wanted to smile, but her eyes filled with tears first. Just looking at her face made my stomach turn."Am I dreaming? Gavin, you've finally forgiven me? You came back?"Gavin, do you have any idea... I think about you every single hour of every single day."Her voice was so hoarse it was barely there. She threw herself against me, sobbing out how much she had missed me, her tears soaking through my shoulder.I felt nothing. She had killed me, yet now she wanted to talk about regret, as though regret were something you could buy off a shelf and swallow to make it all go away. When she had finished crying, I took the chance to push her gently back and put distance between us."What exactly are you doing, Mrs. Cavell?"Corinne seemed to register the lingering warmth on my body a beat too late. She pinched her own

Something about the scene made my skin crawl. I told the System to shut it off."We had a deal. I finished the storyline. I completed the mission. You never said anything about aftercare. I'm not going back."All three of them were clearly unhinged. Going back would be walking straight into my own grave. The System pleaded with me."Gavin, I know you think the last bonus was low. If you agree to go back and fix the storyline, I'll request another 30 million from headquarters."Only 30 million? The 20 million I already had was more than enough to live comfortably for..."Gold bars.""Well, seeing as I'm such a generous person, I suppose I could do you this favor."The System let out a sigh of relief and began walking me through the details."Gavin, once you're back, your only objective is to keep the novel world stable. As long as the protagonist survives, the mission is complete."I was about to nod when the System yanked me back into the novel world before I could even finis

"As long as it saves him, I'll pay whatever it takes."The foreign doctor thought it over for a moment, then asked Corinne to send everyone else out of the room.Once it was just the two of them, he lowered his voice and began to explain the method. The System relayed all of this to me, but I could not have cared less. I had collected my bonus and returned to the real world.I had gotten 20 million in reward money, a vintage estate, a luxury sports car, and women were hardly in short supply. If I wanted, there were plenty who would have thrown themselves at me without hesitation. However, after everything I had been through with Corinne, I had no appetite for any of it. All I wanted was to rest, take it easy and maybe go fishing.I lost myself in the quietness, as days blurred together. Sometimes, the memories from the novel world drifted back, all the love and the hatred and the grief, but none of it felt real. It was more like waking up from a very long nightmare. Then the Sys

I tried to open my eyes. Through the blur I could make out three figures moving toward me at a half-run, a mother and her two children.Corinne saw the ice crusted over my down jacket and her eyes went red in an instant, but then she seemed to remember that I had been defying her, and she slowed her pace, removed the emotion from her face, and came to a stop in front of me."The kids are right here. Drop the act. I know you're still trying to spite me."When I did not respond, Corinne looked uncomfortable, as though my silence was making her look foolish. She crouched down and reached for my arm to pull me up."I already told you..."Her fingers touched mine and she froze. They were ice-cold. A wave of panic, enormous and uncontrollable, swept through her.Her breath was caught in her throat. Her hands were shaking as she lifted my rigid, stiffened body off the ground. In the last moments before my soul left, I saw a single tear slide down her face."Daddy, why isn't Daddy gett

After she finished, Corinne hesitated. A conflicted flicker crossed her eyes, and a few seconds later she added, "If you agree to apologize to Malcolm, I might consider letting you..."She had not even finished the sentence before I cut her off."I appreciate the offer, but I won't admit to something I didn't do. Kneeling in the attic? Fine. I'll go."The System would be back in a day. There was no reason to keep up the act with her any longer. The color drained from Corinne's face. She gazed at me with a cold look and said, "Don't come crying to me later."I looked at her calmly, the faintest smile at the corner of my mouth. "I won't."Something in my expression seemed to throw her off, just for a moment, but Malcolm was already leaning against her, whimpering loudly, and her attention shifted right back to him."Someone take him to the attic."She put an arm around Malcolm's waist and walked out without looking back.Lyle was grinning from ear to ear. "Corinne's given the or
