Chapter 1

"You and your family have truly suffered a horrible death, Fred—an entire family gone just like that, without even leaving a descendant behind!"

I stared blankly at the scene as a sudden burst of wailing echoed in my ears. I noticed three coffins lined up neatly before me, holding the bodies of Wendy Lowe, Fred Lancaster, and Draco Lancaster—Mom, Dad, and my younger brother.

Those who were mourning so passionately were Shawn Lancaster and Olivia Smith—my uncle and aunt from the countryside.

I had been reborn. I had returned to the day my whole family staged their deaths. I watched them lie peacefully in their coffins as if they were merely asleep. A sudden wave of fury rushed through me. I let out a sharp cry and threw myself at Draco, who looked completely at peace.

I bellowed, "You're truly a shame to the Lancaster family, Draco! How could you just die along with Mom and Dad? How could you just end the Lancaster family bloodline? I'm going to properly teach you a lesson today on behalf of the Lancaster family!"

I used every ounce of my strength to violently slap Draco across the face while wailing. My fingernails dug in and left scratch after scratch.

I wanted to see how long they were going to keep up the act. They got to eat well and live comfortably, while I was abandoned in a stockpen used as a holding cell, left for others to bully and abuse.

Why did Draco have the right to boss me around since we were young, just because he was born male?

In that instant, the sharp sound of slapping echoed throughout the funeral hall, and before long, Draco's face became visibly red and swollen. His eyelids were twitching constantly, but even so, he remained completely motionless inside the coffin.

I couldn't help but wonder if Mom and Dad, who were lying next to him and faking their deaths as well, would become so enraged that they would sit up. After all, they were hearing their worthless daughter slap their precious son.

In the meantime, the onlookers, who were shocked by my reaction, quickly stepped in to hold me back.

I took the opportunity to bury my face in Lucy Hall's, my neighbor's, shoulder. "Why did I have to be the one left alive, Lucy? Mom and Dad are gone, and Draco is dead, too. How did the Lancaster family—?"

I got so choked up with emotion that I couldn't even say another word. Upon witnessing my heartbroken state, the onlookers let out collective sighs of sorrow.

"You've been through so much, you poor child. You have to keep living, for your parents' sake as well as your own."

"You need to stay strong, Hope. Even though they're in the grave, your parents wouldn't want you to be in this much pain."

I let out a cold, mocking smirk with my face still buried in Lucy's shoulder, thinking that they clearly wanted me to suffer; after all, they clearly wished they had never given birth to a daughter like me.

In my past life, Mom, Dad, and Draco staged their deaths as a family, pulling off the perfect vanishing act. I had barely finished handling their funeral arrangements and was still drowning in grief when I was arrested.

In that small, dimly lit room, I endured three whole days of torment without any food or water.

Those authorities took turns interrogating me, demanding to know where the gold bars my family received were hidden. They were convinced that since I was the sole survivor of the Lancaster family, I was the only one who knew the location of those gold bars.

How could I possibly explain the truth of a matter concerning things I had never seen or heard of before, though?

They eventually gave up on interrogating me, but as punishment and to make amends, I was dragged out to be paraded through the streets. The onlookers, who were driven by their hatred for those who bled the country dry, lined up to pelt me with rotten vegetables.

I still couldn't understand what I had ever done to deserve all of this, even after I was sent down to a stockpen used as a holding cell in the Great Barren North.

I held on and pulled through, thankfully. I spent 20 years paying off those debts, and right when I thought I could get a fresh start in life, I unexpectedly ran into the three people who were supposed to be long dead. Instead, they were happily talking and laughing together.

I was overwhelmed by disbelief as I rushed forward to confront them. However, they were afraid that their fake deaths would be exposed, so they drove over me with their car.

Heaven had fortunately granted me mercy, though.

I, Hope Lancaster, managed to crawl my way back from hell and became a true vengeful spirit out for blood.

Mom, Dad, and Draco had stolen assets worth a massive amount of money, and since they stubbornly refused to give up their hidden assets while on the verge of death—even attempting to fake their own deaths to escape punishment—the verdict was delivered swiftly. They weren't being sent down to the Great Barren North this time but to the remote borderlands.I heard that the climate in that place was volatile and full of plateaus, so people like us from the coast simply couldn't adjust to it. It was likely they wouldn't last more than a few years before dying there.I had severed ties with them long ago, so I wasn't affected in the slightest. I could no longer restrain my inner joy after hearing this news. I went to the restaurant with the little money I had previously hidden away, bought an order of the chef's specialty—a rack of ribs—to go, and ate until my mouth was dripping with grease.I no longer had to stay to see how they would end up, since the unknown waiting in front of t

Upon hearing that, the crowd's collective gaze followed her line of sight and settled upon me.Mom, who had initially thought her ploy had worked, slowly lost her nerve as the crowd began to murmur in disgust."How can that family be so shameless? Do they really think we don't know what kind of life her daughter had to endure at home?""I know, right? I heard that she's already 19 years old, but she looks barely any bigger than my 15-year-old daughter. I mean, heaven knows how badly they mistreated her back at home.""Exactly! She got lucky, though, since her parents made her legally sever ties with them just to safeguard their property. Otherwise, she would be right there suffering alongside them today!"Throughout the discussion, the crowd kept up their pace. If anything, they hurled things with increased speed, and before long, all the rotten vegetables in their hands were gone.In those days, people were reluctant to waste even a scrap of food, which just went to show how tho

It was the following day, and anyone who was well-connected already knew exactly why Mom, Dad, and Draco had staged their deaths. They also knew I was the daughter they had disowned, so every look they threw my way was full of pity.It was to the extent that when I went to buy groceries, the market vendor gave me an extra handful of fresh vegetables with a look of pure pity on her face. "You can get through this. You must take good care of yourself and live well alone in the days ahead."Lucy, my former kind neighbor, insisted that I move in with her. "How could those monsters do that to you? I used to think they were decent people, but to think they were abusing you in secret and then expected a 19-year-old to take the blame for their massive crimes is appalling. They're truly appalling! "You should stay with me, Hope! I'll treat you like you're my own daughter!"Lucy cried tears of pure sympathy even as she kept cursing them out.I looked at the woman before me and felt warmth

In the dead of the night, the streets were completely silent, with the moonlight casting a silver glow across the ground.Having been closed for an entire day, the gate to the Lancaster residence finally creaked open, and under the cover of the night, the trio emerged, each holding a small bundle and peering out surreptitiously.Upon seeing that the street outside was completely empty, Draco straightened right up and swaggered out of the courtyard. "Get a move on, Mom and Dad! Didn't I tell you that no one would find out that we're running away? Those fools won't even know what hit them by the time we're living it up in Halveron. "You just wouldn't listen, though, insisting on staging that fake death stunt with Mom, which almost got my face ruined by that worthless wretch!"Draco's voice rang out loud and clear in the dead silence of the night."You'd better keep your voice down, you troublesome brat! Do you want to wake up the whole neighborhood and have them watch us leave? Who

"I'm so glad you're still alive, Mom! I really thought I was going to be an orphan! Aunt Olivia actually forced me to sign over all our family property to them just now! "It's a relief you're both still alive, since that means I'll still have parents to spoil me and a big house to live in!" I tilted my face upward slightly while saying this, smiling in a fragile, obedient way.Aunt Olivia stepped forward with a grim expression at that moment. "You'd better listen up—I couldn't care less whether you're alive or dead since your daughter had already signed the house and everything else over to us just a moment ago. Your house belongs to us now."Upon hearing that, Mom slapped me hard across the face.I used the momentum to roll onto the floor, crying out repeatedly, "Please don't hit me, Mom! I'm really sorry! I swear I won't ever do it again!"In the course of my tumbling, my sleeve slowly crept up my arm. Thus, everyone caught sight of my heavily bruised arm.Lucy quickly steppe

Just as everyone stood in a tense standoff, a few uniformed officers suddenly appeared at the gate. "We received a report that heretical practices are being openly carried out here. We are here to make arrests."I glanced past them and smiled at Lucy's son. I had no intention of sparing a single person who had helped Mom and the others torment me from the very moment I was reborn. In that instant, everyone shifted their gaze toward the cleric, who became visibly nervous. "I-I did no such things, officers. I—"He was cut off by the inspection squad before he could even finish his sentence. "You can save your excuses for later. Why are you the only one standing there dressed in a cleric's robe if you're innocent? Why isn't anyone else dressed like that?"They moved in to handcuff the cleric, whose face had already turned deathly pale, after saying that.In the meantime, the crowd promptly stepped aside, clearing a path for them. Upon realizing that he had no way out, the cleric lo
