The Distance Between Us

Nicholas’s POV

It had been a few days, but the fog in my mind still wouldn’t move away. On the outside, things went on as usual with quiet hallways and usual routines, but inside, I noticed a difference. It felt to me like a sharp splinter close to the outside of my skin. I kept running into it and feeling frustrated, restless and anxious.

Even if I had ruined her life, no one else but me knew how much she deserved those outcomes. Her name wasn’t slandered, no one confronted her in public and still, the shame attached to her like a strong scent she couldn’t get rid of.

Her head was still held up, but something about her status was gone.

The false confidence in her eyes was just that—false. She flinched when someone whispered near her, glanced twice when laughter echoed from behind. She wasn’t invincible anymore.

But the truth?

I didn’t care.

Whatever Selene was going through didn’t matter to me. Not anymore. My only concern—my only real problem—was Azaria.

Smoke and ShadowsNicholas's POVAshley was gazing at the photo as though it had pierced through her reality. Her hand shook, which tried to stretch out. “I would rather die than kiss Killian,” she whispered.I believed her.Not because she was my sister but because I knew her. Ashley could be careless and hot-blooded, however, treachery was not in her genes, certainly not the treachery to the one she once considered to be her best friend.“Then we’re being played,” I said quietly.Ashley looked up. Her expression was pale and tight, but there was a spark in her eyes—anger, raw and sharp.“Selene,” she said.My jaw clenched. “She used dark magic to kiss me. I was stuck. Couldn’t move, couldn’t speak. It was like my body wasn’t mine.”Ashley looked horrified. “That’s not just an obsession. That’s dangerous.”“She did it because she knew Azaria would see,” I said, pacing the room. “She wanted to destroy whatever was left between us.”Ashley’s voice was flat. “Well, she did.”I stopped.

Fractures and FlamesNicholas' POVIt felt like another crazy day without Azaria. The school was an empty place, without her, like it was part of my own world that became quiet. The manner people looked at me had also changed. I heard whispers behind me every time I walked, and I did not need to make an educated guess either.“It's the Prince.”“Did he really cheat on Selene or is it the way around?”“Is this how he would rule us?”I kept walking, my jaw clenched tight, hands shoved deep in my pockets. I was sick of it. Sick of the noise, sick of the stares. Ashley had refused to come to school again today. She said she still felt guilty, but that didn’t solve anything. The damage had been done. And now, Azaria was gone too.Gone…I did not know whether she would ever turn up again.I had finally made it to a point where I could get to class without further drama when Selene interjected herself in front of me in front of the courtyard. The smile was a small weak thing.“Nicholas.”I b

Glass ShardsAzaria’s POVThe following morning I woke in the embrace of a couple of little bodies. Lucas and Ariana remained sleeping in the curled-up position like a kitten, each lying beside me. Lucas was holding the blanket by the corner, his head under it, whereas Ariana was flinging her arm carelessly across my stomach, the locks of her hair tumbling on the pillow like a crown of golden fire.At least I felt a bit lighter after days.I had overcome the fever, and could breathe without feeling as though somebody had set an anvil on my chest. My arms and legs hurt a bit, still, but that was nothing. I could move. I could think.Unfortunately.Because thinking brought memories.Killian. Ashley. That photo.I closed my eyes, as though I was still sleeping and was hoping that sometimes I could fall asleep again. But Ariana in arousal, opened her sleepy eyes and bumped me gently.“You okay?” she whispered.I nodded. “Yeah.”“Today’s Tuesday. You wanna skip school?” Lucas mumbled from

The Breaking PointAzaria’s POVI was slowly getting better.Physically, at least. My fever had subsided and my body aches were also gradually being released. My aunt had even smiled that morning, declaring my color had returned. She brought me some tea and toast, and sat there at my bed, and said she thought I would like to have a walk. I nodded, because I did not want to appear ungrateful, but deep within my heart was still sick. The type of sickness which would not heal by medicine. The kind that clawed at your chest in the quietest moments. After Killian left, things inside me shifted. He had come with warmth, with concern. His being had been safe and his words were like a balm-until they were not. Up to the moment when there was a silence that started to grow longer and harsher. Because no matter what he said about protecting me, something didn’t sit right. And I could not shake it. Not able to get out of my mind the things she did not say and the way he looked. And Ashley.I mis

Lines in the SandNicholas’s POVI needed to get out of my own head. For the past few days, my thoughts had been circling the same drain—Azaria’s absence, the rumors, the lingering sense that something wasn’t right. School felt empty without her.Not just in the physical sense, but like the air had been sucked out of the place. There were no sharp comebacks in literature class, no flashes of her dark eyes in the hallway. No Azaria. It gnawed at me.Ashley had been quiet, distant, even when surrounded by her loyal group of friends. She smiled, but it never reached her eyes. I knew her well enough to see through the act. Beneath the layers of gloss and pride, she was unraveling. But if you asked her about Azaria, she’d shrug and say something clipped like, “She needed time.”Time? No. Something had happened. And Selene…Don’t get me started. That girl had been hovering around me like a shadow I couldn’t shake. Always chirping in my ear, offering fake sympathy for “what Azaria put us thr

Behind Friendly SmilesNicholas' POVI should’ve known something was wrong the moment Azaria didn’t show up to school again. It had been two days, and though people whispered that she was probably just sick, something in my gut told me it wasn’t just that. Not when the halls still echoed with gossip about her. Not when Ashley walked into class with her usual poise, but her eyes were distant—guarded, like a locked room no one could enter.Ashley didn’t talk about Azaria. Not to me. Not to anyone. But I could see it in the way her jaw tensed when someone so much as mentioned her name. It was just that heartbreak, covered with the flawlessly applied eyeliner and rehearsed smiles. She was broken and yet, she pretended that nothing occurred. But it had. Something had happened—something big—and nobody was saying anything out loud. The public—our classmates, our so-called ‘friends’—still believed Azaria was the villain. They speculated wildly, feeding on the rumors like vultures on a carcass
