The Unmoving Sun

Nicholas’s POV

The room was quiet.

Too quiet.

The type of silence which sat heavily on your chest, and seemed to make breathing difficult. There was the sound of machines murmuring faintly, rather like reminders of the fact that Azaria lived after all. Technically.

But her soul?

Her soul had been gone for weeks.

I was sitting on the side of her bed and my crossed legs were painfully on the floor, my head on the edge of the bed. It smelled of lavender, of the oil with which Ashley had always cooled herself after a fright, rubbed on her wrists. And there was a vial she had left here, amongst the sunflowers that already were half wilted in a vase.

Azaria would’ve hated the silence.

She energised the room even as she remained silent. When she was just smiling, or tightening her eyes like that as though she was going to make some witty thing at my expense, as I knew she would.

Now she was still.

Unmoving.

Unbreathing, even if the machines said otherwise.

I lifted her hand

Moonchild MasteryAzaria’s POVThe days after my return to the waking world felt both gentle and demanding. The palace still moved with a kind of hushed awe, as if I might slip away again at any moment. Faces softened when I passed.Conversations paused, as though my presence was enough to change the air. Nicholas rarely let more than a few steps stretch between us. The company that my family provided was continuous in nature like an anchor that keeps a sea faring sailor to stay close to his being. It was a comfort but also a reminder. If I was truly back I could not simply have stood in the midst of all this warmth and let life go on about me. I had to step into it fully. It could not be fear that determines my decisions anymore. That was what sent me to the little coutage in a far corner of the north woods. The place where Liora lived. She had been a name carried in quiet voices for years, the Moon Warden. A witch that had refused all the proposals to power, and so was living solita

A Kingdom RebornNicholas’s POVThe sun was pouring down golden light on the palace grounds and to the marble corridors it gave a pleasant sense of warmth. Things had been weighing heavy on my chest since weeks since Azaria came back and I felt the weight getting smaller. Every morning I would wake up to hear her voice. I slept every night knowing I had her with me. Alive. Breathing. Whole. The kingdom felt different now. It was not only that the danger had lessened, though that was part of it. It was the way Azaria stood beside me. She was not an ornament for the court to admire from a distance, nor a silent shadow following my steps. She was my equal in every sense, my partner in ruling and in life. That morning, we sat together in the council chamber. The war table stretched between us, cluttered with maps, coded letters, and markers in deep red ink where the last of Selene’s loyalists were believed to hide. The threat had not been erased. The serpent still had teeth. But now, for

The Celebration We Almost LostNicholas’s POVThe palace has never been like this before. The sound of music issued forth of the great hall, rude and uncontrollable, mingling with the laughter which rebounded in the white marble halls, running out into the gardens. There was an aroma of roast meats and sweet wines and bread flavored with the moon. Around the fields the bonfires were crackling, and the packs were midway feasting, though not feast of custom, but of survival.A celebration none of us thought we’d ever get to have.Because she came back.Azaria.Alive, breathing, smiling, walking, her step a bit sluggish, but still soft, yet still she was herself.I was standing at the further end of the garden, out of the crowd, some distance away. Her face was lit up under the moon and she bore her head thrown back as she laughed at something Ashley had said. The hair tumbled in her back disheveled and undone as I had fallen in love with the girl before all the turmoil was released. Th

The ReturnAshley’s POVThe corridors never seemed so long.My pulse was pounding against my rib cage so I ran through it, nurses shouting behind me, sounds that were more like a background blur behind the thunder in my ears. Not in fear… no. In hope. In disbelief.“She moved… she opened her eyes!”I didn’t want to believe it.Not again. We’d had too many false alarms. Twitch and breath and flutter of lashes that never reached its close without heartbreak. Too often Nicholas had cried wolf, gazing at her with the expectation that she might first turn into a life form, that love was the sole means by which to pull an individual out of nowhere.Yet it was not the same sensation in the air this time. My bones were shaking. My soul wouldn’t let me stay still.I pushed the door open and…She was looking at me.Azaria.Eyes open.Breathing.Alive.I clawed back against the wall where I could not hear the machines suddenly. The little sighs and nonsensings faded to blankness with the rest of

The Mirror TrialAzaria’s POVThere was no sky here.No ceiling, no horizon, no stars.Just an endless silver void, like fog laced with moonlight, stretching in every direction. I walked through it barefoot, my steps silent. The ground beneath me was cool and untextured, like glass, but it didn’t reflect me.Nothing did.Until I reached the mirrors. All of them not the same height, but curving in odd unstable ways. They moved lightly, as though they had a pulse, with curling and trembling silvery flanks like water that a wisp of breath had stirred. The Memory Keeper had been behind them, clad in that heavy mantle of his everlasting silence, his glowing eyes staring at me like his book still in progress.“You’ve come far,” he said in a voice like broken glass.I said nothing. Not yet.He stepped aside, gesturing toward the first mirror.“This is who you were.”I hesitated then looked.A small girl stared back at me.Eight years old, maybe. Hair tangled. Eyes too wide. She wore a faded
