The Shattered Mirror

Azaria’s POV

Something was wrong with my reflection.

At first, I thought it was just exhaustion. The kind that gnawed at my bones and turned thoughts into static. I hadn't really slept since the rescue. Since the chamber. Since Nicholas had carried me out of that underground tomb and whispered that I was safe now.

Safe. That word barely meant anything anymore.

I stared into the mirror above the washbasin in the Council guest suite, watching myself. My eyes, my hair, my lips. Everything looked the same. Almost.

Except for the delay.

My reflection moved a second too late.

It blinked slower. Smiled when I didn’t.

I blinked again—and the girl in the mirror didn’t.

I felt cold creep down my back.

The atmosphere had thickened and stirred my skin with intangible fingers. The wind blowing extinguished the candles throughout the room and wavering shadows swam on the wall. The mirror shook, vibrated, made a sound as though something were moving to escape.

The Name in the DarkAzaria’s POVThe cave beneath the mountain pulsed with cold magic. The deeper I descended, the more ancient it felt—like stepping into the lungs of the earth itself. Every breath was thick with history and forgotten things. The stone walls smoldered with the runes. I could not decipher the sigils written with spirals, claw marks and runes that hissed and whispered out of reach.A drip was going on at the ceiling and it kept the same alerts as my beating heart. The higher we went up steps, the colder the air got until I was breathing out in mist. In the midst of the cavern the circle Vireya had hewn out of the stone floor was waiting, the lines traced in ash and crimson blood, beating faintly as a heart.I hesitated at its edge.I wasn’t afraid of magic. I was afraid of what waited beyond it.Steeling myself, I stepped in.The instant my foot crossed the sigils, the air snapped. The light in the cave turned and disappeared leaving a dim reflection of the stone unde

The Witch of FangsightAzaria’s POVThe borderland of Frostwood was chillier than I thought. The dead trees were covered with the snow, which looked like frostbitten fingers, and the wind whistled around the bone-like branches, singing songs of ghosts and warnings. My every step made a blood-trail in the snow, little scrapes on thorns by which I did not care to go round, bruises that made themselves unnoticeable.Vireya.The Witch of Fangsight.A name spoken in hushed tones even among covens, a figure buried in footnotes and sealed records. She was exiled decades ago—too dangerous, too curious. A witch who believed in blending bloodlines to harness forgotten magic. She had created things—things like me.Finding her had taken everything. Bribes. Secrets. Blood oaths. Even then, the directions I received weren’t directions at all—just riddles etched into tree bark, bones hung like signs, the smell of magic sharp in the air like burnt copper. But I found her.The trees whose upper branch

Shadow WithinNicholas’s POVThe forest was too quiet. Not only the wind held its breath. My whole self was tense as I lurched among the trees. The moonlight came through the thick forest in slices, throwing deadly shadows which moved like ghosts. I could feel my heart beating against my rib cage in a rhythm that choked me. There was something peculiar. It is watched by something.I had been experiencing that creepy feeling that someone was following me miles. It grasped me, as fog to the corner of the mind. I twitched my claws, my instincts yelled, with every little snapped twig or whispered sound of movement. Then I heard it.A snarl.Low. Predatory.Too close.I turned—too late. There was a fur and teeth whirling into me like a falling tree. My body shot through the brush, and the brush collided with some trees and knocked me down with a Galloping Bolter bang. The fire appeared through my ribs. My mouth was full of coppery blood. The renegade wolf did not balk. And it flung at me,

The Rogue CouncilNicholas’s POVI should have known they’d turn on us.From the moment Azaria and I walked into the Council Hall, the air shifted. Heavy. Cold. Tense.Twelve Alphas sat in a crescent formation at the head of the chamber, flanked by their betas and advisors. These weren’t just warriors—they were politicians, kings, monsters hiding behind etiquette and ancient law.And now, they were staring at Azaria like she was a weapon left unattended on the floor.I stood tall beside her, one hand resting on the curve of her back. She hadn’t said a word since we left the outpost. Her expression was unreadable. But I could feel her power humming beneath her skin. Contained—but barely. We were still connected. Still bonded. But she didn’t lean into me like she used to.And that hurt more than any wound I’d taken in battle. The Head Councilman, Alaric, rose from his seat. A towering man with white hair and calculating eyes. He looked down at me, then at her.“You bring us a storm,” he

Cracks in the BondAzaria’s POVThe world came back in pieces.A breath.A heartbeat. The gentle sway of motion. The smell of pine and blood and sweat. And then—warmth. Not from fire. From him.I stirred, eyes fluttering open to soft light filtering through slanted beams above me. We weren’t in the forest anymore. Not in the stone chamber or my mother’s cursed cottage. This was… somewhere safe.My head was on the chest of Nicholas. His arms were round me,and I could feel I should disappear had he released me. I did not move for a moment. I only heard the heart beating of the fellow against my ears and allowed myself to fancy I was alive.“Azaria,” he whispered, drawing himself away a little that he might see my face.I stared at him and then blinked.“I had thought that I had lost you,” he whispered.“You didn't,” I rasped out, “I did not die.”The fact was I did not know how much I was.It was a little room, wooden, with a smell of cedar and ancient stone. An outpost, maybe. A field
