The Truth After the Silence

Azaria’s POV

I don’t know how long I stayed curled under the covers after Killian left—minutes, hours, maybe lifetimes. Everything felt muted. Like the fever had seeped into my soul, fogging up everything that once felt certain. I believed that I was over crying. I believed that the tears were exhausted, and then I heard the knock at my door a second time, timid and cautious. Something hesitate.

“Azaria?” It was Killian again.

I didn't say anything, but the door creaked open anyway. He stepped in slowly, his gaze scanning my face, searching for permission.

“You forgot this," he said, and handed me a packet of tissues out of the bag he had brought up earlier.

I nearly broke a smile with the ridiculous act. Tissues. Like they could mop up everything inside me.

“Thanks,” I said, voice hoarse.

But I didn’t take them. I looked up at him instead, and something in his face, something tender, open, raw, opened a door that I had thought long ago closed. I gasped and

Lines in the SandNicholas’s POVI needed to get out of my own head. For the past few days, my thoughts had been circling the same drain—Azaria’s absence, the rumors, the lingering sense that something wasn’t right. School felt empty without her.Not just in the physical sense, but like the air had been sucked out of the place. There were no sharp comebacks in literature class, no flashes of her dark eyes in the hallway. No Azaria. It gnawed at me.Ashley had been quiet, distant, even when surrounded by her loyal group of friends. She smiled, but it never reached her eyes. I knew her well enough to see through the act. Beneath the layers of gloss and pride, she was unraveling. But if you asked her about Azaria, she’d shrug and say something clipped like, “She needed time.”Time? No. Something had happened. And Selene…Don’t get me started. That girl had been hovering around me like a shadow I couldn’t shake. Always chirping in my ear, offering fake sympathy for “what Azaria put us thr

Behind Friendly SmilesNicholas' POVI should’ve known something was wrong the moment Azaria didn’t show up to school again. It had been two days, and though people whispered that she was probably just sick, something in my gut told me it wasn’t just that. Not when the halls still echoed with gossip about her. Not when Ashley walked into class with her usual poise, but her eyes were distant—guarded, like a locked room no one could enter.Ashley didn’t talk about Azaria. Not to me. Not to anyone. But I could see it in the way her jaw tensed when someone so much as mentioned her name. It was just that heartbreak, covered with the flawlessly applied eyeliner and rehearsed smiles. She was broken and yet, she pretended that nothing occurred. But it had. Something had happened—something big—and nobody was saying anything out loud. The public—our classmates, our so-called ‘friends’—still believed Azaria was the villain. They speculated wildly, feeding on the rumors like vultures on a carcass

What the Silence MeantAzaria’s POVI awoke in a cold perspiration, my skin scalding hot and clammy both. I had a drum-like pounding in my head, and all my limbs seemed to have been wringed and twisted. I forgot even where I was briefly.Sleep and fever had carried me away to a place of darkness, a place of silence--and the awakening was no debutante relief. It simply brought me back to the pain.I heard my aunt mentioning something, and she came in the room very quietly, with a glass of water and a thermometer. "Azaria, honey… you are burning up. You are running a fever."I made no protest. I couldn’t. I was parched, my limbs seemed leaden, and the beat in my temples would not permit me to think of anything but that. She tucked the blanket under my chin and with her tender fingers she brushed the hair away off my face."Forget school today, she said, very firmly but tenderly. Rest. Your body is trying to say something to you."I weakly nodded. Frankly speaking, I could not think of r

What They Didn't See ComingNicholas’s POV"I didn’t know what to do to solve the problem,” she said angrily. “You believe that it’s a simple thing to be in the eye of everyone? Most people think you should be flawless all the time."“So that’s it?” My voice cracked with rage. “She fell in love with me. So you destroyed her.”Ashley looked away again. “I just wanted her to be safe.”“You were always seen. You were always loved. But you wanted to be worshiped.”Her jaw clenched. “And what about you? You’ve always been a playboy. Don’t act like you’re not biased.”“I am biased,” I said, breathing hard. “Because Azaria never faked who she was. She didn’t wear a crown to make herself shine. She earned it. She didn’t need a throne to be radiant.”Silence stretched between us.Ashley’s eyes glistened. “I didn’t mean for it to go this far.”“Well, it did.”She crossed her arms again, defensive. “You don’t understand what it’s like to feel replaceable.”I leaned in, voice low. “Don’t I?”She

The Fire Beneath the CrownNicholas’ POVAs soon as the bell rang, I sprang out from my seat, which felt like a coiled spring about to snap because of all the day’s pressure. I wasn’t even aware of when my friends were around me. I ignored all the whispers, stares, and sudden movement from the people around me who acted like I was radioactive.Azaria hadn’t spoken to me. Not once. I observed her in the hall, looking down and hugging her books tight against her body. She appeared to be in pieces. No—shattered.Plus, Ashley was involved in making things happen in one way or another.I swiftly strode through the palace while ignoring guards, attendants, and even the steward who was trying to call me. I couldn’t get myself to act like a royal. Politeness was not what I felt like showing.I needed answers.Ashley and our father were in the garden parlor. Her voice was always bright and her manners were royal, just how a princess should be. She presented him with a cup of tea while displayin
