The red blink of the camera light vanished as quickly as it appeared, but the chill it left behind stayed.

Sienna’s blood iced in her veins. She clutched the papers tighter, pulse roaring in her ears.

“They’re watching us,” she whispered, more to herself than him.

Jax was already moving, swift and silent, gun in hand as he strode to the window. He yanked the curtains shut with a sharp snap, then turned to her with eyes gone hard.

“They’ve been watching you,” he corrected.

The correction sent a shiver down her spine.

Jax holstered the weapon, grabbed his phone from his cut, and tapped a few buttons. “Stay down. Don’t move.”

Sienna let out a short, incredulous laugh, raw from fear. “Don’t move? Someone just broke into my home, attacked us, and now there’s a camera pointed at my window. Forgive me if I’m not great at following instructions right now.”

He turned on her, eyes narrowing. “Sienna—”

“No.” She pushed herself to her feet, anger bubbling up with the terror. “You waltzed into my

The sound of that creak above them sliced the room in half.Sienna froze, heart slamming against her ribs, the incriminating photo still clutched between her fingers. She stared at Jax, wide-eyed, trying to mouth the question that wouldn’t form: What do we do?Jax already had his gun up, jaw tight, body coiled like a predator ready to strike. His eyes flicked toward the ceiling, then back to her.“Stay here,” he mouthed. Her whole body screamed no. Every rational thought she had left told her to run, to bolt out of the apartment and never look back. But she couldn’t make her feet move. Her home—the only place that had ever been hers—suddenly felt like a trap.Jax edged toward the door, movements fluid, silent. Sienna’s breaths came shallow, loud in her own ears. The air itself seemed to thicken, pressing down on her chest.Another creak. This one sharper. Directly above her bedroom.Jax motioned toward the corner. “There’s a crawlspace hatch in the ceiling,” he whispered. “Attic acces

The message glared back at her like a lit fuse.Check your apartment. Top drawer. Don’t trust Maddox. Her hand shook as she gripped the phone, pulse slamming against her throat. She felt Jax’s gaze burning into her before he even spoke.“Who was that?”His voice wasn’t raised. It didn’t need to be. The quiet edge in it curled under her skin, prickling with danger.“Wrong number,” she said too quickly, tucking the phone against her leg.He arched a brow, eyes narrowing. “Bullshit.”“I’m serious. Probably spam.”Jax leaned closer, his big frame closing in, and plucked the phone from her grip before she could react. He scanned the screen once, and his jaw locked.“Who sent this?”Her stomach dropped.“I don’t know.”“Think.” His voice snapped like a whip. “This is a setup.”She swallowed hard, forcing herself to meet his eyes. “It could be someone trying to help me.”“Or someone trying to put a bullet in your skull.”The room felt smaller with every word he spoke. She didn’t want to beli

Darkness clung to her like a second skin.It was the kind of darkness that wasn’t just the absence of light, but the absence of time, of certainty, of self. Sienna floated in it, her body heavy, her thoughts fragmented. Snatches of sound seeped through like water through cracks: tires screeching, a man shouting, the muffled thud of fists meeting flesh. And then, silence. When her eyes finally fluttered open, the first thing she saw was the ceiling—peeling paint, water stains blooming across plaster. A light bulb buzzed overhead, too dim to drive the shadows from the corners of the room. Her mouth was dry, her tongue thick. She tried to sit up, but her wrists were tied behind her back, biting into her skin.Panic flared. She wasn’t in her apartment. She wasn’t in the SUV.Where the hell was she?Her chest rose and fell too quickly, shallow and sharp, until the sound of footsteps made her freeze. The door creaked open. And there he was.Jax.Not polished or composed—blood smeared along

The blond man’s smile was too calm for someone picking up strangers off the street. It wasn’t smug like in the alley—it was worse. Controlled. Like a wolf that didn’t have to snarl because it already knew it would eat you.Sienna’s fingers dug into her coat. “Where’s the man from the phone?”The blond man tilted his head, eyes flicking to the driver. “Change of plans.”Her chest tightened. “Meaning?”“Meaning,” he said, settling back in the seat, “I’ll get you where you need to be. And then you’ll have all the answers you’ve been begging Maddox for.”The SUV turned sharply onto a narrower street. Buildings loomed closer, brick walls and dark windows sliding by like watchful eyes. She forced herself to keep her voice steady. “You know where Emily is?”“I know where she’s going to be,” he said. “Which is more useful than where she’s been.”“That’s not an answer.”“That’s the only answer you get until we get there.”She glanced at the driver, who kept his eyes on the road. Big guy. Shave

The words hung in the cold air like smoke.Ask him why he really cares about that girl, sweetheart.Sienna’s heart was still racing from the adrenaline, her fingers white-knuckled on the bike seat. “What does he mean?” she called, voice shaking.Jax didn’t answer. He vaulted onto the bike in one smooth motion, grabbed the handlebars, and started the engine with a roar that drowned out everything else.“Jax!” she tried again.“Hold on,” he barked. She did—more because she had no choice than because she wanted to. The bike shot forward, tires spitting gravel as they tore out of the alley. Wind slapped her helmet, the city blurring past in streaks of neon and shadow. She kept replaying that blond man’s smirk in her head, the way he’d said that girl like it meant more than just Emily Reyes. They didn’t stop until they were across the river, the hospital and its questions far behind. Jax pulled the bike into the covered space behind an old brick warehouse. The engine cut out, leaving them
