Something about this did not sit right with Sebastian as he slowly stood up and watched her closely.

He had one of those hunches he usually had that caused him to regret a lot afterwards.

He still did not understand what she wanted to speak to Mara about in private, which he could not listen to.

It didn't feel very clear and, of course, discomforting. He told Mara he would be right outside, and should anything happen, she was only to call for him, and he would be there beside her.

Mara nodded, and he stepped out to see his men. Seeing him emerge alone, Waylan was the first to ask what was going on when they came close, as they had followed his instructions strictly not to listen to any conversations.
