Chapter 5

Author: Stars
"Excuse me, which one of you is Professor Claire Sexton?"

I nodded in greeting. "That would be me."

The soldier swung open the armored truck and tipped its entire load onto the ground. Bundles upon bundles of banknotes spilled out.

"This is the money our superior instructed us to deliver. Please verify the amount."

"That won't be necessary." I waved him off and turned to Austin. "Didn't you want proof of my ability to raise Amy? Do you see it now?"

For the first time, Austin's usually unshakable composure faltered. He drew in a long breath. "Do you really think hiring a few actors and throwing around counterfeit bills will frighten me? The Grant Corporation is worth billions. And my girlfriend, Melanie Wilder, is the heiress of one of Bexley City's four most prominent families."

"Austin Grant. Melanie Wilder." I repeated the names slowly, as if committing them to memory. "Go on—list all your backers. I want to hear them all."

His confidence wavered. A ripple of unease ran across

  • Bad Nanny   Chapter 8

A few years later, my research project finally reached its perfect conclusion. With my work complete, I returned to Bexley City once more, this time with Amy by my side.Since the collapse of the Grant family, Bexley City had become a completely different place. As we walked along the street, a small boy suddenly ran toward us, dropping to his knees. His frail voice trembled as he pleaded, "Madam, please… have mercy. My dad and I haven't eaten in three days."I recognized him instantly. The boy was Ethan, Austin's illegitimate son. Years ago, Austin had severed all ties with him, driving him out of the family without a second thought. I never imagined that one day the boy would be reduced to begging food from me.Gone was the arrogant spark that once clung to him. Now, he bowed in the dust, willing to sacrifice all pride for a single bite to eat.Not far away, a ragged figure rummaged through the garbage. At the sight of me, the emptiness in his eyes flickered with a faint light.

After that incident, Bexley City underwent earth-shaking changes. All four prominent families suffered heavy blows. Without their support, the Grant Corporation collapsed overnight, drowning in massive debt. They were blacklisted, hunted daily by creditors, until finally, the family vanished without a trace. As for Isla, after returning home, she lived in constant terror of retaliation. Unable to withstand the crushing pressure, she eventually leapt from a building and ended her life.My words had come true. Those who hurt me would always pay the price. To make up for the years I wasn't by my daughter's side, I brought her into my laboratory. Every day, after finishing my research, I stayed with her."Mommy, is this where you work?" Amy asked, eyes wide with curiosity as she took in the unfamiliar surroundings.I smiled and nodded. "That's right. And Mommy promises you never to leave you alone again."She grinned and nodded eagerly. Just then, one of my colleagues walked over,

Hearing the dead tone on the other end of the line, Austin's face turned ashen. At last, he realized just what kind of person he had provoked.Calls began pouring in one after another, every voice lashing him with fury—condemning him for offending someone untouchable, warning him he would be dragged down into ruin. Some even threatened to bury him along with them. With a roar, Austin hurled his phone to the ground, then collapsed to his knees, clutching his head as he wailed, "What is happening to me!"I stepped forward, looming over him."What's wrong? Can't withstand a little pressure? This is only the beginning."Austin's bloodshot eyes lifted toward me, his voice trembling. "What… what do you mean?"I gave a cold snort. A second later, the phone lying broken on the floor began shrieking with notification alerts. Each tone sounded like a death knell.Austin snatched it up, scanned the messages, and collapsed again. The Cromwell and Lowell families had issued a joint statemen

Austin frowned as he reached for my work ID, but before he could glance at it, Isla snatched it away and ripped it to shreds."What are you doing?!" I snapped. She flung the fragments in my face with a sneer. "Still trying to fool Austin with a fake ID? Don't bother. I saw through your little trick long ago."Her laughter rang sharp and cruel. "Look at you. The best you could manage is selling yourself to some decrepit old man. Though I doubt anyone would even want you."Austin thought I was lying. He said flatly, "Amy is my daughter. With me, at least she won't starve. With you, who knows? You might sell her off to some backwater village." He paused deliberately, letting his words draw out. "Unless—""—you give me child support for keeping her."I arched a brow. "How much?"He raised a single finger. "One million."Isla let out a shrill laugh, covering her mouth in mock astonishment. "Mr. Grant, aren't you being unfair? Look at her, she's dressed like a beggar. Even if she s

  • Bad Nanny   Chapter 3

"I'm not only alive. I'm living well."I glared at Austin. For six years, I had imagined him waiting for me, flowers in hand, our daughter by his side, welcoming me home. But reality was crueler than any nightmare.I had spent those six years in the lab. My face had aged under the radiation and drugs. He, on the other hand, had hardly changed at all. He still looked as handsome as when we first married. Only now, those once-warm eyes were cold and unrecognizable. The man before me was no longer the Austin who had loved me.Before our marriage, the research institute had courted me repeatedly, but back then, Austin's startup had failed, and he'd fallen to rock bottom. I stayed by his side, rejecting opportunity after opportunity. Later, the institute secretly funded him to ease my worries, and when his company thrived, we married. But his success had never been his own. With a flimsy company full of holes, how could he have drawn so much investment? All of it had come from the
