Chapter 4

Author: Reading Lamp
Silence stretched on for a few seconds, and sweat began to bead on Marcus' forehead. Suddenly, he forced a grin. "Um… Sabrina? Could we study together?"

Damn! Who even taught him to smile like that? I had never seen anyone try this hard before.

When I still didn't respond, Marcus started panicking, and his hands trembled.

I'd had enough of watching him look like he was about to suffocate, so I finally spoke. "Of course! I'd love to, Mr. Perfect! Studying with you would be a dream come true!"

I showered him with praise, practically putting him on a pedestal. Instead of looking flattered, Marcus got even more awkward.

"I-I'll see you at the library after school," he stammered.

Having said that, he spun on his heel and bolted, panic clear in every step.

I hummed a little tune as I walked into the classroom, feeling like I had just won the lottery.

Valerie was already there. When she saw me, she handed me a small bag of cookies. "Sabby, I baked these last night and saved them just for you."

I was so touched.

"Oh, sweetie! I'll love you forever!" I squealed.

Strangely, ever since Caleb and Valerie reunited, she hadn't shown any reaction. When he brought up the past, she said lightly, "I don't really remember. But meeting you now isn't so bad."

Valerie was cold toward Caleb, as though he were a stranger. Yet, she was glued to me.

She had to sit next to me at lunch, follow me to the water fountain, and even insisted on tagging along to the bathroom.

When I told her she smelled good, she grabbed my wrist and pressed it against hers. "There, you can have a bit too."

I complimented her looks, and she yanked me close, making me look at her properly. "What's pretty? Be specific."

I said her skirt looked nice, and the very next day, I found a matching one in my backpack.

Goodness! If I didn't know she was completely straight, I'd think she was flirting with me. The whole teasing routine she pulled off was seriously lethal. I nearly switched sides on the spot.

I was completely oblivious to Caleb sitting right behind me. When I was about to press the cookies into Valerie's hand, he kicked my chair and snapped, "Are you trying to starve me?"

I shot upright, frantically fishing a sandwich from my bag. "Babe, the egg is cooked just right, tons of ketchup, and no lettuce. Just the way you like it."

He hummed, a faint smile tugging at his lips. That was approval enough.

After that, I turned back and handed Valerie the cookies.

"Here, these are yours," I said with a smile.

She beamed as she took them. In the next instant, she leaned in to kiss me.

I laughed and leaned back, narrowly avoiding her kiss.

Out of the corner of my eye, I saw Caleb in the back row. His face clouded over with anger, and I sat up straight, my heart skipping a beat.

What if he thought I was trying to make a move on Valerie? Then, the whole matchmaking plan would be ruined.

I couldn't afford to let anything go wrong.

I spent the entire day on edge. When the last bell finally rang, I grabbed my bag and made a beeline for the library.

Our school's crown jewel was the exclusive study room. It featured private cubicles with excellent soundproofing, bright lights, and even ergonomic chairs.

Marcus was the ultimate academic overachiever, and he occupied the largest cubicle.

I hummed a tune as I pushed the door open and immediately spotted him sitting at the desk, his back perfectly straight.

The moment he looked up and saw me, he stiffened. He didn't know what to do with his hands, his legs shifting in and stretching out again. He was so innocent it was almost unreal.

I clicked my tongue softly and strolled over.

As I slid into the chair beside Marcus, my hip brushed lightly against his thigh. His body went rigid instantly, as if he had just been zapped.

I pretended to flip open my book, then sighed. "Oh no. I forgot my pen. Mind lending me one, Mr. Perfect?"

"Alright," I said.Once we'd settled in, the three of us headed downstairs for dinner. The restaurant wasn't crowded, so we decided to choose a table by the window."What do you want to order?" Asher asked as he handed me the menu.I flipped through it briefly before declaring, "Let's get one of each seafood dish."Marcus furrowed his brows. "That's a lot. Can we even finish it?""If we can't, we can always pack it up," I replied nonchalantly.Asher let out a chuckle. "Fine. We'll do it your way," he replied. It didn't take long for the dishes to arrive. Soon, the table was covered with plate after plate of seafood. As we chatted over dinner, the mood between us settled into something warm and cozy."Sabrina," Marcus said suddenly.I gave a small hum in response."Are you happy?" he continued.I paused at his words. "Of course I am. Why do you ask?"A smile tugged at the corners of his lips. "I just wanted to make sure. Seeing you happy puts my mind at ease."I kept my ga

On the way back to campus, I found myself walking between Marcus and Asher. The night breeze carried the scent of early summer. All of a sudden, it struck me how nice this kind of life was. Without the need to date and the constant fear of losing someone that came with it, I was content as long as I had sincere friends."Sabrina," Asher suddenly said.I gave a soft hum in response."Will we always be like this?" he asked. His question caught me off guard. "I think so," I replied after a moment. "As long as we all want it to stay that way.""That's good to hear."Marcus spoke up as well. "No matter what happens in the future, we'll always be friends.""That's right. We're friends for life," I said with a smile. After that, we fell into a comfortable silence as we walked on. Still, I knew we were all thinking the same thing.…Finals arrived right on schedule.I was certain that I did pretty well. At the very least, I wasn't in danger of failing any of the subjects. All th

Just then, Asher walked in with a whole bag of snacks in hand.He placed the snacks on the table. "Here, have some. You'll need the energy."I immediately tore open a bag of chips. "You're the best, Ash!" "Of course, I am," he replied lightly, settling into a seat beside me. "How's revision going?""Don't even ask. It feels like my brain's about to explode," I crunched on a chip and grumbled."Why don't you take a break then? There's no point in studying non-stop anyway," Asher said."But exams are right around the corner.""That's exactly why you need to relax. Come on, I'll take the two of you out," he replied.Marcus frowned at his words. "Now? I don't think that's a good idea.""What's wrong with it? Work hard, play hard—that's the way to do it," Asher replied as he stood up.I hesitated for a moment before asking, "Where are we going?""Just follow me."In the end, Asher dragged the two of us out of the library and straight into an arcade."Why are we here again? Before I could finish my sentence, I caught sight of Caleb walking toward us.He came to a stop by our table before asking, "Can I sit here?"The three of us froze at his words. In the end, Marcus spoke first. "Sure."Caleb sat across from me. After a brief silence, he said, "There's something I want to tell you, Sabrina."I set my fork down. "Go ahead.""I'd like to speak to you alone," he insisted.I glanced at Marcus and Asher. "You can just say it here. They're not outsiders."A frown crossed his face, but in the end, he still nodded. "I've thought it through," he said. "We really weren't meant for each other."I raised an eyebrow at his words. "And?""So, I want to apologize to you properly. What happened before was my fault. I shouldn't have treated you that way," he said, meeting my eyes."I've already received your apology," I replied."I know," he said quietly. "But I wanted to say it again. I'm sorry, Sabrina."I studied him for a few seconds. "You've changed, Cal

"Here, Sabrina." Marcus handed me an umbrella."Thanks," I replied."Do you want to grab something to eat? I know a pretty good place nearby," Asher offered.I shook my head. "No, it's okay. I want to be alone for a while."The two of them exchanged a glance."Alright," Marcus said gently. "You can always come and find us if you need anything." I gave a soft hum in response. After they left, I held up the umbrella and made my way back slowly. The rain grew heavier as it drummed against the umbrella above me. All of a sudden, my thoughts drifted back to the first day I arrived on campus. It'd been raining that day, too.I'd stood by the entrance, feeling a little lost as I took in the unfamiliar surroundings before me.That was the moment I first crossed paths with Caleb. He'd brushed past me, umbrella in hand, without even sparing me a glance.I remembered thinking he was really good-looking. And that was how I started to pursue him. Looking back now, it felt almost li

Asher broke into a sudden fit of coughing the moment my words fell. "W-What kind of nonsense are you blabbing about?" he stammered.I blinked at him innocently. "I was just asking, but that was quite a reaction. Don't tell me I'm actually right?" He looked away and replied, "That's not it. Don't jump to conclusions."I stared at the faint blush creeping up his ear before letting out a chuckle. "Alright, I get it."Once I'd returned to the dorm, I lay on the bed and scrolled through my phone. Just then, a message from Marcus popped up."Thanks for coming to see me today. The oatmeal was delicious," he texted."You're welcome. Are you feeling any better?""Yeah, much better.""That's good. Remember to take your medicine on time," I urged."I will. By the way, did Caleb come to look for you?" he asked."Yeah, he came to apologize," I said."Did the two of you make up?""No. I turned him down."There was a long silence on the other end before Marcus finally sent another mes
