Chapter 3

Author: Peanuts for Me
"What's wrong, Lina?" Priscilla lowered her gaze slightly as she felt my stare, the corners of her mouth even curled with a perfectly measured touch of shyness.

She was acting as though nothing happened.

Emma didn't notice the undercurrent between us and remained cheerful as she tugged at my arm. "It's cold out. Come in and warm up."

Hylton must have sensed the awkwardness. He cleared his throat and offered an explanation for Priscilla. "Lina, you didn't take many clothes with you to Zubania, and those were just sitting there. Priscilla didn't have much to wear recently, so I let her use them for now. I'll buy you new ones later."

He said it as if it was the most natural thing in the world. My clothes and my necklace were now someone else's emergency stash. And that someone was Priscilla.

I tugged at the corner of my lips, giving a smile that didn't quite qualify as one.

Saying nothing, I followed them into the villa.

The living room was nice and warm. The dining table was piled high with lavish dishes. Robert was already seated at the head of the table, waiting.

Priscilla walked over to Emma naturally, helping her set the tableware. She chatted familiarly with Robert, making him laugh heartily.

Emma patted her hand with affection. "You're so thoughtful, Priscilla."

In just half a year, she was already thriving here.

I was seated next to Hylton, and Priscilla sat across from him.

Throughout the meal, Emma and Robert kept piling food onto my plate and checking on me.

"Lina, you're so tanned and thin now. You must've had a rough time at the Zubania branch these past six months," Emma remarked with concern.

"Eat more. These are all your favorites," Robert added.

I didn't have much appetite and only moved my spoon around symbolically.

On the other hand, Priscilla acted composed and confident, frequently serving Emma and Robert. She even placed some of Hylton's favorite dishes on his plate. She even knew that Hylton didn't eat scallions or ginger.

Every move—every glance—quietly asserted her place.

She acted like the lady of the house, and I felt like a guest who didn't belong.

Hylton seemed pleased with the atmosphere, a smile playing on his lips the entire time.

He picked out a rib for me. "Try this. Freya made this just for you."

I looked at the glossy rib on my plate, feeling my stomach churn again.

Priscilla raised her head and looked at me with concern. "Lina, why aren't you eating? Is it not to your taste? I can ask Freya to make something else for you."

She sounded soft and innocent.

I couldn't take it anymore. I slammed my spoon down on the table.

The warmth at the table turned to stone.

Hylton's expression darkened. He was evidently annoyed. "Enough! Alina, why the hell are you throwing a tantrum?"

"I'm throwing a tantrum?" I let out a cold laugh, my gaze sweeping past him and Priscilla, finally landing on Emma's and Robert's stunned faces.

Hylton's brows furrowed tightly, and he lowered his voice with warning. "All I did was send you to Zubania for a short break. Priscilla even arranged a vacation for you. You didn't have to work. Is that really a reason to come back with this attitude? It's my mom's birthday!"

A short break?

Those words hit me like a truck.

I went through the beatings, the abuse, and the hopeless, sunless days. Yet, to him, it was just a relaxing trip?

So, that was what it was.

All those nights I clawed through hell, he believed everything Priscilla told him. He thought I was on vacation!

I stared at him, the man I had loved for more than ten years, and suddenly, everything seemed absurd.

"A short break?" I repeated, my voice trembling from the fury surging inside me.

"Yeah, I was just on a short break." I started laughing, growing increasingly louder until tears came out.

They all looked at me, confused and unsettled.

I stood up. "Alright. Then, let me show you how much fun I had during this short break."

I raised my hand to the buttons on my shirt.

Hylton's face changed instantly. "Alina, what are you doing?"

I ignored him. Right in front of all of them, I unfastened each button one by one.

The sound of fabric hitting the floor came at the same moment as the gasps around the room.

A few days later, Hylton came to find me. He looked much more haggard, with heavy dark circles under his eyes. His suit was wrinkled, and all traces of his former confidence were gone.He asked to meet at a quiet café.Across the small round table, he slid a USB drive in front of me."Lina, I've avenged you." His voice was hoarse, filled with a desperate urge to prove something.I didn't touch the USB. I just looked at him silently."I made sure Priscilla suffered twice the pain she made you suffer."He lowered his head and buried his hands in his hair in anguish. "Lina, give me another chance, please? I know I was a jerk. I know I was blind… Let's start over."I almost laughed out loud."Start over?" I mused. What made him think that tormenting Priscilla could erase everything he had done to me? What made him believe that this twisted "revenge" was what I wanted? He was just using another method to satisfy his pathetic need for control and self-righteous redemption.I picke

Hylton stayed at the hospital with Robert through the night. It wasn't until the next day, when Robert's condition had stabilized a bit, that he finally left. But he didn't go home or to the company. He took the investigation tablet—detailing every bit of the suffering I had endured—and went to find Priscilla. That report didn't just cover the details of my captivity. It laid out, in even greater detail, the one who had orchestrated it all—Priscilla. She was the one who had pushed me into the living hell of Zubania. The evidence was irrefutable. When Hylton found Priscilla, she didn't seem to realize how deep in trouble she was. In fact, she even tried to approach Hylton the way she always had, with just the right touch of worry and grievance on her face."Hylton, you look terrible. Is it because of your dad—"She couldn't finish her sentence, as Hylton raised his hand and slammed the tablet on the coffee table in front of her.The glass surface cracked instantly with a sharp,

Micah Lloyd stepped forward. He was a veteran, quick and capable, and had worked for my dad for years. There was a calm yet intimidating energy about him.He walked up to the Millers, turned his body sideways before gesturing them toward the door. The motion was courteous, but his eyes left no room for refusal. The message was clear—if they didn't leave on their own, Micah and the bodyguards standing behind him would have no hesitation in "escorting" them out.Robert and Emma looked utterly defeated.Emma opened her mouth to say something, her lips trembling. But Robert grabbed her hand.He gave my parents a long look, then glanced at me. His expression was unreadable. After a moment, he turned away in resignation.Hylton was still shielding Priscilla. The handprint on his face was stark, his eyes still full of shock and unwillingness. But when he met my dad's cold gaze and looked at Micah and the several strong, expressionless bodyguards behind Micah, he didn't dare act up aga

The reception room at the villa was tastefully arranged, but the air was thick with silent tension.I sat between my parents, facing the four people on the opposite couch—Robert, Emma, Hylton, and Priscilla.Priscilla shot me a silent, provocative smile. Only now did I get it. When one truly was out of words, all they could do was laugh. We were about to discuss breaking off the engagement, and they brought Priscilla here?Robert cleared his throat, breaking the silence first. He forced a kind smile and said, "Things have gotten messy. Hylton's young, hot-tempered, and a bit impulsive. Every couple has their little fights."Emma chimed in quickly, "Yes, yes. It's all just a misunderstanding. Our friendship has been standing strong for years. It'd be a shame to ruin that over something so small."She turned to me, her gaze carrying a subtle hint of scrutiny. "Lina, dear, if you ever feel wronged, you can always talk to me. How could you just—"Before she could finish, my dad cut

Dozens of eyes were on me.I clutched the medical report in my hand, my nails nearly digging into my palms.Hylton was still in a rage, his face twisting in fury. Gone was any trace of his usual calm and grace."Alina! Look at me, goddamn it! Say something!"He tried to grab me again, and the pain in my wrist was so sharp that I could barely stay standing.Just then, a few dark figures rushed over. Before Hylton could react, his arms were firmly restrained."What the hell are you doing? Let go of me!" He struggled, cursing foully under his breath. But the men in black suits were like iron clamps, unmoving as they dragged him out."Let go! Do you know who I am?"Behind the bodyguards, two familiar figures hurried toward me.It was my parents! The grievance, fear, and despair I had held back for so long burst out the moment I saw them. Like a dam breaking, my tears flooded down as I stumbled forward."Mom! Dad!"The moment I got my phone and could reach the outside world, I

The shock on Hylton's face only lasted a few seconds. Then, as if he had been played, a flash of anger rose to his face, though he quickly forced it down and replaced it with a look of feigned tolerance."Lina, don't make a scene, okay?" he said with the helpless tone one might use to coax a child. He took a step forward, trying to come closer, the rose stem in his hand swaying meaninglessly."I know what happened before made you feel wronged." He sounded as if he were doing me a favor."We were doing just fine before. Have you forgotten how long we've been together? All those happy times…"He began to list our past memories, his voice gentle. But his gaze was evaluating, as if he were calculating how much patience it would take to fix my "childish" outburst."I know maybe… something bad happened while you were away, and you got led astray." He paused, looking as though he were in deep pain. "But it's okay, Lina. As long as you're willing to change, I…"He took a deep breath an
