CHAPTER 53 - THE DOCKS

Three days after Vasquez was reassigned, Marchetti brought something new to the study.

"A contact of mine spotted activity at the old shipping district," Marchetti said, laying a folder on the desk. "Same two men, arriving on a regular schedule for the past two weeks. Last night, a third car showed up. Plates traced back to a shell company we've linked to Kozlov holdings before."

Luca opened the folder. "You're confident in the plates."

"I ran them through a contact at the registry myself," Marchetti said. "Same company from the shipment dispute eight months back. I don't think it's coincidence."

Elias leaned over the desk, studying the surveillance photos. "A staging ground," he said. "Somewhere close enough to gather intelligence without keeping a permanent presence inside our territory."

"That's my read too," Marchetti said.

Luca's eyes moved between the two of them. "It doesn't explain the mansion sensors," he said. "That took someone with direct access to the security system, not patient observation from outside."

"No," Elias agreed. "That one still points somewhere inside. It's possible we're dealing with two separate problems instead of one. An old breach that's already closed, and something newer exploiting whatever's still weak."

Luca considered that for a long moment. "I want eyes on that warehouse tonight," he said.

"I'll have it arranged," Marchetti said.

He left the study within the hour, and Luca remained behind his desk, turning the surveillance photos over one more time before setting them aside.

"You don't look convinced," Elias said.

"I'm not convinced of anything yet," Luca said. "I've learned not to celebrate a lead until it's produced something I can actually use."

Marchetti watched the warehouse for three nights straight before he brought Luca and Elias out to see it themselves.

"Same pattern every night," Marchetti said, lowering his binoculars in the back of the parked car. "Two men in, two men out, roughly the same hours. Tonight the third car's back too."

Luca kept his eyes on the building. "No movement otherwise?"

"None worth reporting," Marchetti said. "Whatever they're doing in there, they're doing it quietly."

"Then we go in tonight," Luca said. "I want to know exactly what's inside before they have the chance to move it somewhere else."

"I'll get the men in position," Marchetti said, already reaching for the radio.

Elias watched the warehouse a moment longer through the windshield. "If this is what it looks like, it changes the shape of the whole investigation," he said. "Not a single source feeding information from inside the house. A patient operation running alongside it, gathering pieces wherever it can."

"That would explain the pattern better than a lone man ever could," Luca said. "It wouldn't explain the sensors."

"No," Elias said. "It wouldn't."

Luca said nothing further, and the three of them sat in the dark car for the better part of an hour, waiting for the last of Luca's men to move quietly into position around the warehouse's perimeter.

The raid, when it came, produced considerably less than Luca had hoped for.

The warehouse stood nearly empty by the time his men breached it, a handful of crates holding nothing more incriminating than ordinary shipping supplies, the building showing every sign of having been cleared out in a hurry sometime in the previous hour.

"They knew we were coming," Marchetti said, standing amid the empty space, his frustration plain.

"Or their own schedule happened to end early," Elias said. "We watched them for three nights. It's possible the rotation simply finished on its own, and tonight was never going to be different regardless of when we moved."

"Three nights of the same pattern, and they clear out completely the one night we finally move." Luca's voice had gone hard, flat. "That's not coincidence, Elias. That's someone warning them, in real time, that tonight was the night."

"Who knew the timing?" Elias asked.

"Myself. You. Marchetti. The four men who went in, briefed an hour before we moved." Luca's eyes swept the empty warehouse once more, cold and assessing. "A considerably shorter list than the ones we've worked from for months."

Elias understood, standing in the wreckage of a raid that had produced nothing but a narrower set of names, exactly how much his own margin had just shrunk.

"Then we account for every hour before the raid," Elias said. "Starting with the four of us. I'll go first, if it helps."

Something flickered across Luca's face, a fraction of something that might have been respect for the offer, though his voice carried no softening at all when he answered.

"Everyone," Luca said. "Starting tonight."

Marchetti's account cleared within the hour, a call to his sister confirmed by the phone company's own records, nothing in the timing that lined up with anything suspicious. The four men who'd executed the breach had been sequestered together the entire time, each able to vouch for the others without a single gap between them.

Elias's account took longer, not because Luca doubted it more than the others, but because Luca insisted on walking through every minute personally, cross referencing it against records Elias had already reviewed a dozen times over the past several months.

"A call to a supplier," Luca said, reading from the phone log. "Four minutes."

"Routine confirmation on next month's terms," Elias said. "You can verify it against the supplier's own paperwork."

"I already have," Luca said. "It matches."

"Then there's nothing further to account for."

Luca studied him a moment longer, something considering in his expression rather than suspicious. "No," he said finally. "There isn't."

He set the phone log down and rubbed at his temple, the particular exhaustion of a man who had spent the better part of a week chasing something that kept slipping away from him just as he thought he had it in hand.

"Four accounts, all clean," Luca said. "Which means either the leak came from somewhere none of us have considered yet, or someone in this house is considerably better at covering their tracks than the four of us combined."

"It's possible the warehouse operation isn't connected to the mansion leak at all," Elias said. "Two separate problems, each one making the other harder to see clearly."

"That's a convenient theory."

"It's not meant to be convenient," Elias said. "It's meant to be accurate, if it happens to be true. I'd rather consider the possibility than assume every failure traces back to a single cause simply because a single cause would be easier to solve."

Luca was quiet for a long moment, turning that over. "You may be right," he said finally. "I don't like it. I'd prefer one problem to two. But I don't get to choose which is true simply by preferring it."

Elena was still awake when Luca returned to the mansion that night, well past midnight, and she found him in his study, the particular exhaustion of a failed operation settled visibly into his shoulders in a way she'd rarely seen from him.

"The raid didn't go well," she said, more observation than question.

"No," Luca said. He crossed to the window instead of answering further, staring out at grounds gone dark and quiet. "Someone knew we were coming. The list of people who could have known has narrowed considerably tonight, and I don't like any of the names currently on it."

"Does that include Elias?"

"Technically, yes. Practically, no," Luca said. "I've trusted that man with considerably more than the timing of a single raid over the years, Elena. I'm not prepared to let one bad night undo that."

Elena said nothing further, and Luca turned finally to look at her, something tired crossing his expression.

"You should be asleep," Luca said.

"I couldn't. Not until I knew you were back."

Something in his posture eased slightly at that, and he crossed the room to where she sat, settling into the chair beside her rather than behind his desk.

"It's been a long night," Luca said.

"Do you want to talk about it, or would you rather not?"

"I'm not certain there's anything left to say tonight that wouldn't simply be the same frustration repeated in different words," Luca admitted. "I'd rather sit here, if you don't mind the company being poor."

"I don't mind," Elena said, and they sat together in the quiet study a while longer, the investigation's uncertainty settling over both of them, unresolved, patient, waiting for whatever the following days would bring.

Neither of them spoke for several minutes.

Beyond the windows, the grounds remained still.

Somewhere in the distance, a night watchman moved along the outer path, his footsteps faint against the stone before disappearing again into the quiet.

Elena glanced toward Luca.

"Do you think you'll find whoever did this?"

Luca didn't answer immediately.

"I think we'll find them," he said eventually. "I just don't know how much we'll lose before we do."

Elena's expression tightened.

"That's what worries you?"

"Among other things."

"Then don't carry all of it tonight."

"I'll try."

For the first time since returning, some of the tension in his face eased.

Outside, the mansion remained quiet.

Inside, four accounts had been cleared, an empty warehouse had raised more questions than it answered, and the person responsible for the leak remained somewhere beyond Luca's reach.

For tonight, there was nothing more to do but wait.

Tomorrow, they will start again.

The new restriction produced its first real test within the week.Elias was in Luca's study that morning, going through the latest reports, when his phone vibrated against the desk.He glanced at the screen before answering. "Yes?"Marchetti's voice came through the line, tight enough to immediately catch his attention. "We have a problem."Elias straightened slightly. "What happened?" Elias asked."One of the drivers mentioned the Tuesday shipment route to a woman at a bar two nights ago," Marchetti explained. "He says he didn't give her any actual details, but from what I can tell, she asked enough questions to work out which night the shipment is moving."Elias glanced toward Luca, who was reading a report across the room."How much does the driver remember?" Elias asked."Enough to tell us what she asked," Marchetti replied. "He says she bought him two drinks, talked casually for a while, and asked about his work. Nothing felt suspicious at the time.""Does he know her?" Elias as

Elias came to Luca’s study just before noon.He knocked once before entering, carrying a thin folder under his arm. Luca looked up from the reports scattered across his desk and immediately noticed the expression on Elias’s face."You look like you’ve found something," Luca said."I’m not sure I’d call it something," Elias replied as he closed the door behind him. "It’s more of another way to look at what’s been happening."Luca leaned back in his chair and gestured toward the folder. "Another theory?""Possibly." Elias said."That usually means more work." Luca said.Elias gave a faint, tired smile as he placed the folder on the desk. "It probably does."Luca pulled the folder closer but didn’t open it yet. "All right. Tell me."Elias remained standing across from him."For the past four months, we’ve been assuming the information was being taken deliberately," he began. "Someone knows what they’re looking for, understands when it matters, and knows where to send it. We’ve been tryi

The accounting Luca demanded took two days to compile properly. It was tedious work, requiring more than a simple statement of where everyone had been. Every man who had known the raid's timing was required to provide a detailed record of his movements and communications during the hour before the operation began. Luca wanted exact times, names, phone numbers, locations, messages, and anyone who could confirm where they had been.Nothing was considered too insignificant to include.Elias spent most of the second day going through the records available to him before submitting his account. He listed every movement he could remember, every conversation that mattered, and every communication made during the relevant hour. There was one call to a supplier during that period, brief and routine, concerning the terms of an upcoming shipment. He included the number, the time of the call, and the reason for it in his report. The supplier's logistics manager had been the person on the other

The elimination process Elias had promised moved forward carefully, and by the end of the second week, the list of forty names had narrowed to twelve. It was still a long way from an answer, but it was enough to give the investigation a clearer direction. "Vasquez," Elias said, laying a thin folder on Luca's desk. "Phone records show three calls to an unregistered number in the past two weeks. Each call happened within an hour of information later showing up in ways that don't track back to any legitimate source." Luca opened the folder and scanned the details with the same unhurried, cataloguing attention he brought to everything. "The gambling debt," Luca said. "Confirmed," Elias replied. "He owes considerably more than his salary can cover, to men who don't extend patient terms." Elias turned another page. "Access to the warehouse schedule. Financial motive strong enough to explain the risk. And now a pattern of unexplained calls that lines up with at least two of the fail

The pattern, once Luca finally admitted it to himself, had become impossible to ignore.Three months into the investigation, every significant operation the organization had attempted had failed in some measurable way. None had been catastrophic. Some had barely caused enough damage to justify more than a few irritated conversations and revised schedules. But there were too many of them.A shipment delayed by a customs inspection that should never have been triggered.A negotiation that fell apart over information the other party shouldn't have had access to.A payment that arrived a day late, costing an entire deal's worth of goodwill, because the route it traveled had somehow become known to men who used that knowledge to apply pressure at exactly the wrong moment. There were smaller incidents scattered between them as well. A meeting that had to be relocated at the last minute. A contact who suddenly stopped responding after months of reliable communication. A minor discrepancy
