The tension between Elena and Luca from the week before had mostly eased by the time she noticed how often Elias found reasons to pass through whatever room she occupied.

It wasn't deliberate, she didn't think.

He never lingered longer than an errand required, never said anything that crossed the careful line he always kept between them.

But she noticed it anyway, the particular, steady frequency of his presence, a cup of tea left within easy reach before she'd asked for one, a chair pulled closer to the fire on the evenings she came down with her shoulder aching in the cold.

"You don't have to keep checking on me," Elena said, one afternoon, catching him adjusting the curtain against a draft she hadn't mentioned.

"I know," Elias said. "I do it anyway."

"Why?" Elena asked.

He considered the question longer than it probably warranted. "Because I like knowing you're comfortable," he said finally, simple, unguarded. "I don't examine it much beyond that."

Elena felt something warm settle in her chest at the admission, uncomplicated in a way nothing else in this house ever quite managed to be.

Whatever this was, this steady, careful attention he kept offering her, it asked nothing in return, demanded nothing, required no careful accounting of what she owed him for it.

It didn't touch the other thing.

She understood that clearly enough, sitting across from him some evenings, watching the firelight catch the side of his face.

Whatever she felt for Elias, gratitude, ease, a friendship that had become one of the steadiest things in her life, it existed in an entirely separate room from whatever she still felt walking down the hall toward Luca's study, that aching, complicated pull she had never once managed to fully name or fully escape.

Elias made her feel safe.

Luca made her feel seen, in a way that still cost her something every single time, and she understood, turning the comparison over more than once, that the two feelings didn't compete with each other so much as occupy entirely different parts of her.

Luca noticed the pattern before Elena did.

He noticed it in the particular ease that had crept into her posture whenever Elias was in a room, the way her shoulders dropped, the way her laugh came easier.

He noticed, too, the considerably more guarded version of her that greeted him most evenings now, something careful in her eyes that hadn't fully healed since the argument weeks ago.

He told himself it was reasonable to notice. An asset's comfort mattered.

Elias's loyalty, six years proven, gave him no genuine cause for concern.

He told himself that, and found the explanation sitting considerably less comfortably in his chest than it used to.

He raised it with Marchetti, almost in passing, the two of them reviewing the week's schedule in his study.

"Elias has been spending considerable time with her," Luca said, not looking up from the papers in front of him.

Marchetti glanced at him, something careful in his expression. "He's always kept an eye on her. Since the beginning."

"This feels different." Luca said.

"Does it," Marchetti said, noncommittal, clearly unwilling to offer an opinion Luca hadn't explicitly requested.

"I'm not asking you to agree with me," Luca said. "I'm asking whether you've noticed anything that would explain it."

"I've noticed he's a decent man who's spent six years in a house that doesn't have many of those," Marchetti said carefully. "If that's what you're asking."

Luca said nothing further, and Marchetti, understanding the conversation had reached whatever limit Luca was willing to extend it, returned to the schedule without raising the subject again.

He came to her room a little after ten that evening, the knock he never quite bothered to wait for, and Elena, already in bed, felt something in her stomach tighten at the particular, deliberate quality of his expression when he stepped inside.

"Not tonight," she said, before he'd crossed halfway into the room.

Luca stopped. "What?"

"I don't want to. Not tonight." Elena pulled the blanket a little higher, some old, exhausted honesty finally surfacing after weeks of carrying more than she'd let herself name aloud. "I'm tired, Luca. I'm tired of the fighting, and the silence after it, and I just want one night that doesn't ask anything of me."

Something shifted across Luca's face, and for a long moment he said nothing, the silence stretching in a way that made Elena's pulse climb despite herself.

"You've never refused before," Luca said finally, his voice flat, dangerously even.

"I'm refusing now." Elena said plainly.

"Is that so?" Luca crossed the rest of the distance to the bed, unhurried, and something in the particular, controlled quality of his movement told Elena that whatever restraint he usually brought into this room had already begun slipping. "I wonder what's changed, these past weeks, that's made you suddenly so comfortable saying no to me."

"Nothing's changed. I'm just tired." Elena said.

"Is it him?" Luca's voice had gone low, cold. "Is that what this is? You've found somewhere softer to spend what used to belong to me?"

"That's not fair, and you know it isn't." Elena's voice cracked, disbelief and hurt tangling together. "Elias has never touched me, Luca. Not once. Not like that. How dare you even suggest..."

"I'm not suggesting anything I haven't already watched happen in front of me," Luca said. "I've seen the way you look at him lately. I've seen how easily he gets what I apparently can't anymore."

"That's not the same thing, and you're twisting it into something ugly because you're angry I said no." Elena said.

"I am angry," Luca admitted, something raw breaking through the cold control of his voice. "I am considerably angrier than I have any practice managing."

Elena pulled back as he reached for her, some old, instinctive fear resurfacing after months of believing she'd outgrown it. "Luca, don't...."

"You don't get to say no to me," Luca said, quiet now, absolute, "the same night I watch you smile at him like that smile belongs to anyone but me."

What followed was not gentle.

Elena understood, somewhere beneath the fear and the fury both still fighting for space in her chest, that this was Luca at his most unguarded and least careful, every ounce of the control he usually governed himself with abandoned entirely to something darker, more insistent, a man reclaiming ground he believed, in that moment, had genuinely slipped from his grasp.

She turned her face away once, and felt his hand catch her jaw, turning her back.

"Look at me," he said, the old rule from months ago surfacing in his voice without any of its earlier context attached to it now. "Whatever you give anyone else in this house, Elena, whatever smiles, whatever comfort, whatever softness you've started handing him so easily, this belongs to me. Only me. It has never once belonged to anyone else, and it never will, whatever you think you feel for him."

She didn't answer.

She couldn't, the words catching somewhere she had no room left to speak around, and when it was finally over, he didn't stay the way he had weeks ago, the tenderness of that other night entirely absent now, replaced by something that left her feeling smaller than she had in a very long time.

He dressed in silence, and paused at the door.

"You belong to me," Luca said, his voice flat again, controlled, the mask fully back in place. "I don't care what you've let yourself feel for him. That changes nothing about what's actually mine."

He left without waiting for a response, and Elena lay very still in the dark long after the door had closed, understanding, with a grief she had no name gentle enough to hold, that whatever fragile, uncertain thing had been growing between herself and Luca these past months had just been buried under something she didn't know if either of them could dig back out from.

She thought, too, of the particular way he'd said whatever you think you feel for him, the words landing somewhere she hadn't expected them to, not because they were cruel, though they had been, but because some small, treacherous part of her hadn't been able to fully deny them.

She didn't know what she felt for Elias.

She'd never once let herself examine it closely enough to find out, content to let it exist in its own quiet, undemanding room without ever opening the door to see what waited behind it.

Tonight, lying alone in the dark with Luca's words still echoing, she understood she might not have a choice much longer.

She didn't cry.

She'd promised herself, a lifetime ago, that she wouldn't, and some old, stubborn part of her held to the promise even now.

She lay there instead, staring at the ceiling, and thought, for the first time in longer than she could remember, of Elias's quiet, undemanding presence, the particular, uncomplicated safety of a man who had never once asked her for anything at all.

The kitchen doorway smelled of bread and rosemary when Luca stepped into it the following evening, and Elena, plate already balanced in her hands, felt the room shift the instant his voice cut across it.She'd been avoiding this exact confrontation for five days, timing her meals around his schedule with a precision she hadn't fully admitted to herself she was practicing, and some part of her, hearing his voice now, understood immediately that the avoidance had finally run its course."Put that down," Luca said.Elena turned, surprised. "Excuse me?""You're not eating in the kitchen tonight." Luca crossed the room, and Elena watched him with a wariness that had become second nature over the past week. "You're eating with me. In the dining room. Where you belong.""I don't belong anywhere, Luca. That's kind of the entire point of what we were arguing about.""I don't intend to relitigate the argument." Luca's voice stayed level, though something underneath it carried a hard edge she ha

Elena kept to the far side of the house for three days, timing her chores and her meals around the hours she knew Luca usually occupied, and understood, doing it, exactly how deliberate the avoidance had become, though she found she didn't much care. She saw him once, in the hallway outside the kitchen, and turned down a different corridor before he'd fully registered she was there. Behind her, she heard him speak her name, low and uncertain, and she kept walking anyway. The hurt was still too raw to risk another conversation that would end the way the last one had.Mrs. Bianchi noticed by the end of the first day."You've taken to eating in the kitchen," Mrs. Bianchi remarked, not looking up from the linens she was folding."It's easier," Elena replied."Easier than the dining room, with all that empty table." Mrs. Bianchi smoothed a pillowcase flat. "I don't ask what goes on upstairs, and I don't intend to start. But a house this size gets a good deal smaller when two people are w

Elena found Luca in his study that afternoon, the request already formed and rehearsed in her mind before she'd even crossed the threshold."I want to see my mother," Elena said. "It's been months, Luca. I haven't left this house since I came to this place."Luca looked up from his desk, something careful settling into his expression. "No.""You didn't even think about it." Elena said."I don't need to think about it," Luca said. "The answer is no.""Why not?" Elena's voice sharpened. "The investigation's been set aside. You've been different these past weeks, softer, more present. I thought that meant something had actually changed.""It has changed," Luca said. "It hasn't changed the fact that I'm not willing to risk you outside these walls simply because I've enjoyed a few quiet weeks with you.""I'm not asking to risk anything. I'm asking to see my mother, with whatever guard you want to send, however many precautions you need." Elena begged."The answer is still no." Luca said.E

Luca found her in the library that evening, later than his usual hour, and something in his expression, unhurried but charged with a particular intensity Elena hadn't seen from him in weeks, told her before he said a single word that tonight would be different."You're not working," Elena said, setting aside the book she'd been reading."No," Luca said. "I find I don't want to be, tonight."He crossed the room toward her, and Elena rose to meet him, some old, familiar anticipation building in her chest that had nothing to do with fear anymore and everything to do with the particular, unhurried way he was looking at her, as though he'd finally set down a weight he'd been carrying for months and had nothing left to occupy him except her."Four months," Luca said, his hand finding her jaw, tilting her face up the way he always did, though something in the gesture tonight carried less of its old, clinical precision and more of something he clearly hadn't fully named even to himself. "I've

Elena found Luca in the garden the evening after the last of the interviews had cleared, the investigation folded away for now behind his usual composure, and settled beside him without waiting for an invitation."You seem lighter tonight," she said."The interviews are finished," Luca said. "Twelve names, all cleared. None of them fit." He was quiet a moment, something almost resigned in his posture. "I've told Elias to set the investigation aside for now. Not close it. Set it aside. Four months of chasing a ghost that may not exist in the shape we've been looking for. It's possible the failures were simply bad luck, compounded by carelessness, the way most operations eventually run into a stretch like this one. It's possible there's no single traitor at all.""That's a considerable shift from a few weeks ago." Elena said."It is," Luca admitted. "I don't like it. I like even less the alternative, chasing a shadow indefinitely and finding nothing at the end of it but a house that's f
