SOFIA

After three weeks at Yale, I’d come to realize that the most stressful day was always Mondays, especially in the morning. I had three back to back classes, and the result of that situation was that I was exhausted before noon. I ended up dozing off in Professor Lambert’s class, and he had to ask me to meet him in his office when he woke me up.

Part of me wanted to just ditch school and pretend I didn’t know where his office was. After all, I could do without my professor yelling at me for sleeping in class. I’d stayed up all night working on the Alonzo dilemma, and I needed to get back to it as soon as possible. But then again, the best thing to do would be to just get it over with. So I grabbed my things and headed for his office after the class.

  • Becoming The Mafia Queen   33. The Reunion

SOFIAThe best thing about waking up on a Saturday morning was that you didn’t have to do anything for a very long time. You could just sit here and enjoy the last few moments of silence before you had to do anything. And I lived for moments like that. I rolled over and stretched lazily as I slowly opened my eyes, and my heart immediately leapt when for a brief moment I thought that Adrian was still in the apartment. But then I remembered that he’d left around 9pm, and just thinking about it made me sad. I wished I could wake up to him sleeping beside me, and I wondered how handsome he would look in that moment. Slowly, I rolled out of bed and dragged my feet to the bathroom. It took me a while to get ready, and even though I wanted nothing more than to lay in bed all day, I had a job to do.I had to somehow track down Hector Alonzo. The fact that Adrian only gave me a name still pissed me the fuck off. How was I supposed to find someone with no lastknown address, no date of birth,

SOFIAI’d just walked out of my last class of the day when I got a text from Adrian, asking me to meet him at a warehouse uptown. Today was the day I would finally get to meet his Capi, and even though I was nervous, I braced myself because this was the next logical step in my mission. So I called an Uber and headed to the location immediately. The warehouse didn't look like much from the outside. It was just an old carcass on the edge of town, and you wouldn’t even think much of it. But the second I stepped through the heavy steel doors, I could feel an energy in the building. A man in a black suit walked up to me and said they were waiting for me, so I followed him as he led me through a maze of corridors until we reached a private office at the back.Adrian was already inside when I walked in, and he was seated at the head of a long table. Beside him, Rafe stood with a scowl on his face and his arms crossed, and he glared pointedly at me as I walked in. My gaze was more focused on

  • Becoming The Mafia Queen   31. The Unfortunate Incident

SOFIAWe barely made it up the stairs as Adrian’s hands were all over me, while my fingers locked in his hair. He kissed me like he was starving for me, like he's been craving this moment for far too long and couldn't believe it was finally happening. His hands were on my waist, and then my hips, and then my thigh as he lifted me effortlessly, with my legs wrapping around him as he carried me through the halls like I weighed nothing. I didn't even know which wing of the mansion we were in until he pushed open a heavy door and kicked it shut behind him. That was when I opened my eyes a little bit, and gasped in shock. We were in the master bedroom. It smelled like him. It was the familiar cologne and smoke that I only associated with him, and the moment we were inside, he slammed me against the wall and kissed me again, much rougher this time as his lips crashed into mine with a hunger and possessiveness that made my head spin. His hands were everywhere, sliding up my dress and down

SOFIAI stood in front of my mirror, brushing a final curl behind my ear as I gave myself one last look. The dress clung to me like a second skin, and I loved how it looked. It was a sleek, black satin dress with a slit that stopped just above my knees. It was backless, but with a pair of delicate crisscrossed straps, and the plunging neckline that didn’t give away too much of my boobs. I'd chosen it not just to tempt Adrian, but to show everyone I would meet today that I wasn’t some pushover who they could mess with. I was the woman coming for the throne, and the sooner they understood that, the better it would be for everyone. I slipped on my heels, then grabbed the tiny clutch I'd packed earlier, and reached for my coat just as the knock echoed from the front door.My heart fluttered as I rushed over, smoothing the sides of my dress before pulling it open with an eager smile, expecting to see Adrian standing outside. But it wasn't Adrian, and I knew I was fucked when I looked up

ADRIANThe second she shut the door behind her, the silence in the car felt heavier. I stared out through the windshield, watching her disappear into the crowd of students with that easy grace of hers, and that innocence that always made me forget what I was, and what she was walking into.My phone suddenly buzzed in my pocket, and I didn’t even have to look to know it was Rafe. "Talk,” I said as soon as I answered. "You're still in SoHo, right?" he asked."I just dropped her off at Yale,” I replied. “Is he here yet?""Good,” I said. “Keep an eye on him till I get back.”I hung up and peeled off immediately, heading back towards SoHo. In hindsight, I shouldn’t have left the spot. I’d been parked outside Monroe’s laundromat since 7am, waiting for the bastard to show up. But then I got bored, so I decided to go over to Sofia’s place and check up on her. It wasn’t a smart move, but at least it was over. And Rafe was smart enough not to let Monroe see him before I got there. If he did,

SOFIAI woke up gasping for air, as my sweat clung to my skin, and my heart thundered like it was trying to punch its way out of my chest. The nightmare had felt so real, and as I tried to remind myself that I was safe, I felt a wave of nausea washing over me. The sound of gunfire still echoed in my ears. I could see my father dropping to the ground, with his blood soaking into the carpet and his trembling hands stretched toward me. I could still hear Marco Giordano's voice, and I remembered how smooth, how calculated and how calm he was. The memory still haunted me at the back of my mind, and the memory of that awful day was too much to bear. I stared at the ceiling for a long time, just thinking about everything that happened. I kept replaying the scene over and over again in my head, the same way I did after it happened. I wondered if there was anything I could have done, if I could have charged straight at him before he pulled the trigger and stabbed him in the fucking eye. So

  • Becoming The Mafia Queen   27. The First Day

SOFIAThe first day of college was bound to be important, and I’d been looking forward to it for so long. From the moment I woke up, I could just feel the excitement bubbling up inside me, like a volcano that was about to erupt. And as I got ready and tried to mentally prepare myself for it, I kept bouncing on my feet and tried to calm myself down. I stood in front of the mirror eventually , brushing a few strands of hair back into place as I smoothed my hands down the front of my blouse. It was simple but flattering, and it was a soft cream blouse which was tucked into black slacks that hugged my curves in just the right places.I briefly wondered what my mother would've said if she was still alive to see me like this. She would've probably cried, smudged her eyeliner and hugged me too tightly before she insisted on taking a hundred pictures from every angle. The ache of missing her brought tears to my eyes, but I blinked it away and grabbed my bag.I checked my phone briefly, half

SOFIAThe DeLuca mansion looked different at night. I could have sworn that it looked more like Dracula’s castle than an actual home, and I hesitated I stood outside while looking up at the imposing building and wondering if it wasn’t too late to just turn around and run away. But I still didn’t know why Adrian wanted me here, so I was still curious to know what he had in mind. He met me at the door, dressed in all black and looking so sexy that I couldn’t even stare at him for too long without feeling like my head was spinning . His jacket was undone, and his shirt was unbuttoned just enough to show the curve of his chest. A shiver ran down my spine as I imagined my hands on his bare chest, but I quickly snapped out of it. He didn't say anything right away, as his eyes scanned me from head to toe while he smirked. "Well?" I asked, arching a brow. “Are we going to keep standing here or are you going to invite me in?” I asked. He stepped forward and reached up slowly, the he brushe
