Prologue
Maeve The first sign that something was wrong when I walked through the front door of the apartment I only recently bought with my fiancée and soon-to-be husband was when I heard a female groaning long and loud like she was in pain. I froze. It sounded too close. Really close. Like in my damn apartment close. I opened my mouth to call out but the voice came again. “God, yes, that feels good.” The voice sounded familiar. And it’s coming from… I walked farther into my apartment, careful not to make a noise. The sound was coming from my bedroom. I brace myself as I press the polished chrome handle and throw open the door. There in bed fully naked was my fiancée and soon-to-be husband… No! He is my husband already. since we registered our marriage officially two months ago. “Shit! What the fuck are you doing here, Eve?” Those were the first words that he said to me when he finally pulled out of the woman he was in bed with. “Is that what you are supposed to say to me?” I didn’t even know how I was still able to speak. I could barely breathe. I turned and started walking away but his hand stopped me. “Eve, wait.” “Wait for what?” I yelled at him and yanked my hand away. He cursed again and sifted his fingers through his hair. “This is all your fault!?” I gasped in shock at his words. No, those words weren’t directed at his mistress. They were directed at me. “My fault? What’s my fault?” I asked him in disbelief. “It’s all your fault! I cheated because of you!” I stared at my fiancée with my mouth open and no words coming out. He just said it’s my fault that he cheated on me. Not just cheated but he cheated a month before our wedding. One month to our big day and I found him dick deep in another woman who was currently still in his bed. Still very much naked save for the bedcover she used to cover herself that was barely covering anything. She didn’t even look a bit remorseful that she was caught in bed with my fiancée. Maybe it would have hurt less if she weren’t someone I knew. Someone I trusted so much. Someone who has been working closely with me for over three years now. My assistant. Violet. One of my bridesmaids. One of the people who has been helping me plan my big wedding. She looked like she was pleased that I caught them. She looked like she was having fun and had been praying for this day to come. Surely it wasn’t the first time. Definitely not. “Why are you just standing there, Eve? Did the cat get your tongue?” His words unfroze my mouth. “What are you even talking about Evans? You are cheating on me with my assistant in our home that we both paid for and you are saying it’s my fault? Have you lost your mind?” I yelled at him. I haven’t even fully processed the fact that this was happening to me. When I decided to come to the house we bought six months ago when we started planning our wedding, I didn’t for once think I would meet my fiancée here because he was supposed to be working on a project. I never expected to see my assistant bent over in all four and asking my fiancée to fuck her harder. Just thinking about what they were doing before I showed up made me want to throw up. “Yes, it’s all your fault! When was the last time we had sex?” My eyes widened at his words. Two months. It was all his idea. The minute we registered our marriage, he suggested that we wait until our wedding night to make love again. That way our wedding night will be even more special. “You suggested it!” I reminded him. “Did I? Or was I just looking for a way to get out of boring sex with you?” I couldn’t believe what he just said. “Boring?” “Yes! Sex with you has been hell and I wanted something better.” I scoffed. “And you got better from her?” I asked, pointing to Violet who was watching us with a sly smile on her face. I had nothing to tell her so I didn’t even bother to address her. “You know what? Don’t answer that.” I told him as I reached for the ring on my finger. I pulled it off and tossed it at him. “What do you think you are doing?” The audacious man asked me. “Obviously, there’s no point in all of this! You found someone else and even though you didn’t have the courtesy to tell me, it’s fine. I can read the room. The wedding is off.” He looked shocked at my words. “The wedding can’t be off! We are getting married in four weeks!” Oh, so he knows? “Not anymore.” I felt proud of how well I was handling everything even though I was breaking apart inside. “Have you forgotten? Legally, you are my wife. We already registered our marriage.” My biggest mistake. I should have waited until the wedding but I wanted our home to be ready before our big day. I wanted us to own the property as a couple and now look where that got me. “That’s okay! I will file for a divorce.” I told him. “You can’t do that. You love me too much and you pretty much don’t have any other option but to marry me.” I swallowed and willed myself not to respond to his insults. “Do you really think anyone else would want you? If you call off the wedding and file for a divorce, you will be alone forever.” I would much rather be alone than be with a fucking cheater. “I don’t care!” Why am I even talking to him while he is still fucking naked and dripping precum mixed with Violet’s essence? I felt sick. “The wedding is off and the divorce papers will be sent to you, make sure to sign!” I yelled at him and was about to walk away when I suddenly realized that I needed evidence. I pulled out my phone and with shaking hands took a video. “What the fuc—“ I used all of my strength to kick the bastard where I knew it would hurt him the most. Yes, his cheating dick. I ran out of there without thinking and didn’t stop running until I got into the elevator and the door closed. I collapsed to the floor of the elevator. Good thing I was alone. I managed to make it to my car and I called my lawyer immediately. I sobbed as I opened my mouth to say the words I never thought I would say in this lifetime. “I want a divorce. Please file the necessary papers to dissolve my marriage with Evans.” I dropped the call after making sure my lawyer heard me and there in my car, I cried.Maeve“I am glad you called me even though it’s late. I like it. You have been a good girl.” Before, that simple sentence would have had some kind of effect on me, and I would have been blushing and covered my face shyly. Now, it sounded corny and annoyed me, but I let it slide.“About the deal.” I said going straight to the point because I didn’t want to spend more time than necessary with him.“Wow, you are not even going to let me sit down or order a drink? Is this what we have become?” I sighed mentally and reminded myself that I needed money. Not just needed money, but I already took one million loan from him.I have to pay it all back.“Order a drink if you want.” I didn’t even care that I sounded harsh. It’s not like we were friends. Everything about him still irritated me.It’s not even because I am not over him, after all, I am already over him.Heck, if Melody didn’t have a crisis, I would still be in Venice and with Andro.“You are being too hostile, but okay, let’s tal
Maeve “Eve.” The first thing I felt when I heard the person on the phone was disappointment that it wasn’t who I thought it was on the phone. The second thing I felt was fear. The fact that I felt the fear secondly made me feel guilty because I knew the only reason my brother was calling me was to give me an update about my sister. “Why are you calling from a different number?” I asked him as I looked around for a cab. “My phone died. Where are you? Have you been able to get anything?” I swallowed the lump that formed in my throat at his question. “Nothing yet.” I cloaked. I felt so useless. “Damn, Eve. What are we going to do?” My brother’s voice broke me even more. “Give me a little more time, and I will find something, I promise.” I told him. “Eve!” Evans came out of the café calling my name. Evans. As much as I hated him, right now, he was the only one who could help me. “I have to go, Tones, I will get the money we need.” I told my brother and ended th
Maeve “Why haven’t you signed this? What are you playing at?” I yelled at him. I was much too stressed out right now to be dealing with this bastard too. I expected our marriage to already be a done deal. We didn’t live together, never did the ceremony so it was supposed to be easy for us to divorce. He was supposed to submit the papers to the court a month ago. I was the fool for trusting him to do things right. “Calm down, Eve.” “Don’t fucking tell me to calm down! Sign this right now because I am taking it to the court with me!” I fired at him. He sat back as if I didn’t just ask him to do something. I can’t believe I believed him when he said he had business for me. I never learn. “I can’t sign that. If I sign it and send it to the court then we will both lose out on a sweet business deal.” I glared at him. “What are you talking about?” I asked him. “If you just calm down, I will explain. I was going to sign this. I have just been busy and thankfully so.” I
Maeve“Mom,” My voice broke as I listened to my mom sob.“Melody has been moved to the hospice. The doctor said if she doesn’t get the surgery, she won’t make it past this week.” My heart broke even more and tears welled up in my eyes.Melody, my baby sister. She has been sick for a while now and I have done everything to help but each time we think she is out of the woods, she relapses. So far, she has had five surgeries and was scheduled to get another but finding a donor has been harder than before.Every penny I have made aside from what I used for my wedding preparation has gone into making sure my baby sister stayed alive. Her insurance couldn’t cover half of what she needed so I had to pay for a lot of things upfront. My other siblings did the best they could too.“Mom, calm down. Are Harmony and Tones there?” I asked for my other siblings.“Tones has gone to speak with the doctor about our options and Mony is at college.” She sobbed. I got out of bed, suddenly feeling guil
MaeveMy God. His beautiful lips were rolling. Moving. Kissing me in the slowest, most sensuous way possible. His hand slides upward. Ever so gently it cradled my face, barely touching me as I gasped softly into his mouth.Even the voice of reasoning calling me and giving me a million and one reasons why this was a bad idea couldn’t stop me.I was kissing him back in an instant.Titling my head to one side, as his tongue slipped past my lips and began eagerly exploring my mouth. His body was pure, unadulterated heat. I could feel the heat radiating outward as he all but pressed himself against me, stopping only to take one of my trembling hands and reposition it on one of his hips.Hmmm…Our kiss became a full make-out session as we went at each other hungrily. It was as if we had been starving for each other all our lives. No words were exchanged. Nothing really needed to be said when our tongues tangled and soft moans of pleasure escaped from my mouth. Our tongues swirled together
Maeve“Hey, gorgeous.” I gasped at his voice. Damn, I didn’t think men still had such husky and bedroom voices. He called me gorgeous. My face heated up when he flashed a smile at me.Even the dim light couldn't hide the hint of a dimple on both his cheeks. Before I could react or say anything, he dragged me with him.I didn’t know what to say or what to do so I just let him pull me with him.Instead of continuing in the direction of the exit, he pulled me with him through a secret door.I knew I should say something. I knew I shouldn’t blindly follow a stranger out of the club but it seemed that my senses took a break when he touched me.Did I forget to mention that my body was tingling even though he was only holding my hand?I couldn’t remember the last time someone had such an effect on me.My gorgeous stranger pulled me through a series of stairs and soon, we were out in the open night and that’s when I realized we were at the rooftop.“Sorry that I dragged you here, I asked for
