Chapter 7: The idea of our world

The drive back from the park was a slow, agonizing crawl through silver fog. It pressed against the windows, thick and suffocating, like the night was trying to trap everything we’d just said inside the truck.

Noah’s hand rested on the gear shift, but his eyes were a thousand miles away.

Meanwhile, I was unraveling.

My face burned as the moment replayed in my head over and over..the crying, the shaking, the way I had completely broken down in his arms.

God.

I actually cried on him.

I let out a small, strangled sound, dragging a hand over my face.

“I just cried on your favorite hoodie,” I muttered, half in disbelief. “Like… fully cried. There’s definitely tear stains. And..” I paused, mortified. “....drool. Oh my God!”

For a second, something softened in Noah’s expression.

“Then you’re definitely washing it,” he said quietly.

A weak breath escaped me ,a  soft laugh, but not long enough

Because the moment didn’t stay light.

It couldn’t.. We hadn’t discussed about “HER”

“I talked to her, Isla.”

Everything inside me stilled.

The air shifted.

The silence deepened into something heavy enough to feel.

I clutched my jacket tighter. “And?”

Noah let out a dry, hollow laugh, shaking his head slightly.

“She didn’t panic. Didn’t scream. Didn’t even get angry.” His jaw tightened. “She just… recalculated.”

“Recalculated?” I echoed.

That word landed harder than it should have. In my world, a recalculation meant fixing an error. In Madison’s, it meant repositioning the pieces until she couldn't lose.

“She reminded me that the West State scouts are coming on Thursday. Said if anyone saw what happened at the lake, people would talk.” His grip on the wheel tightened. “She reminded me that my"fame ", the one she helped build, depends on us looking like a unit.”

The words settled like weight in my chest.

Senior Week.

Scouts.

Reputation.

Of course.

“She said if I ever have the thought of leaving her,” he added, quieter now, “her world would fall apart.” She said she loved me ..isla

Something twisted painfully inside me.

It made sense.

Of course it did.

This wasn’t just about feelings anymore. It was about control, survival, if she was with the quarterback.. She had all the fame she needed to build her own reputation. Senior Week had just begun and it was far too early for rumors.

We pulled into the driveway. The house was glowing, a warm beacon of lavender-scented safety that felt more like an interrogation room tonight.

“Wash the hoodie, Isla,” Noah said softly as he killed the engine and took off the hoodie  . His voice was back to the Noah that always yelled for me to do my laundry , but he still looked puzzled “Before Mom sees the... evidence.”

“I will,” I whispered, clutching the hoodie .

We walked inside, trying to be ghosts. We tried to slip through the seams of the foyer, but Elena was a light-sleeper when it came to the two of us. She was a silhouette in the kitchen, framed by the pale yellow glow of the stove.

“You're late,” she said. Her voice wasn't angry, but it was strained. She walked into the foyer, her eyes scanning us with a practiced precision.

Her brow furrowed, but she didn't ask, not yet ..

“Isla, honey, you look exhausted,” she said instead, her gaze softening. “Good thing I have a pick-me-up for you. It arrived this afternoon.”

She walked to the pantry and pulled out a long, white garment bag.

“I know you didn't think I’d forget the most important part of the week,” she said, her smile returning, though it remained hovering on the surface.

She handed me a  bag.. “ Don’t open it yet till you have someone to take you to the dance .

"I haven't even thought about a date, Elena," I said, my voice trembling.

"You don't need a date to be the most beautiful girl in the room, Isla," Elena said . She turned her gaze to Noah. "And you? I assume you’ve seen Madison’s dress?

Because tomorrow the Senior year week starts. Regionals, the Scouting Showcase, and the Homecoming gala, It’s the most important seven days of your lives. I need you both at your best." She paused, the kettle on the stove beginning to hiss, a  sharp, shrill sound that matched the tension in my chest.

"But before I send you off to prepare for the final week and best week of senior year, let’s have hot cocoa and kindly discuss what happened tonight..." Elena looked between us, her expression calm but her eyes demanding the truth. “What do you think?”

The air felt suffocating.

“ What happened at that lake?”

The Next Morning

Sleep didn’t come.

Or maybe it did,but not in a way that mattered. The hot cocoa had felt like a peace offering, but the conversation had been a minefield. We had given Elena just enough  "disagreement," and "stressful night" to satisfy her, but the silence between Noah and me as we went to our separate rooms was louder than any confession.

This morning, my desk was covered in scribbles. Half-finished equations. Rewritten formulas. Proofs that started strong and collapsed halfway through.

I stared at the page in front of me.

\lim_{x \to \infty} \frac{1}{x} = 0

It was simple. Obvious.

And yet my pen hovered like I didn’t trust it.

“Focus”,i mumbled to myself .

Numbers made sense. Numbers didn’t lie. Numbers didn’t change depending on who was watching.

So why couldn’t I hold onto them?

I dropped the pen, exhaling sharply.

Maybe Dani was right.

Maybe I was trying to solve too many variables at once.

The truck ride to school was quieter than the night before but not easier.

Noah tapped the steering wheel lightly, like he was trying to keep rhythm with a song that wasn’t playing.

“Regionals today,” he said after a while.

“Yeah.”

“You’re going to win.”

I shook my head. “I don’t need to win. I just need the top three.”

He glanced at me briefly. “You always say that.”

“Because it’s true.”

We pulled into the school parking lot.

For a moment, neither of us moved. “Good luck, Izzy-Bee,” he said quietly.

The nickname hit harder than it should have.

“Yeah thanks Quarterback”, I said, opening the door before the silence could stretch any further. “You too.”

“Okay,” Dani said the second she saw me, adjusting her glasses. “Based on your face alone, I can conclude two things.”

I blinked. “Good morning to you too.”

“You didn’t sleep,” she continued, ticking it off like a checklist. “And your emotional state is currently… unstable. I’d say borderline chaotic, but still within functional limits.”

Despite everything, a small smile tugged at my lips.

“Is that your official diagnosis?”

“Yes,” she said seriously. “You’re operating like a system with too many unknown variables and no clear constraints.”

I leaned against the wall.

“Feels accurate.”

Dani studied me more closely now, her expression shifting.

“And,” she added slowly, “there’s something else.”

I stiffened.

“What do you mean?”

“You and Noah,” she said. “Your vectors are… off. You’re not moving in sync anymore.”

My chest tightened.

“It’s nothing,” I said quickly. “Just stress.”

Dani didn’t look convinced.

But she let it go.

“For now,” she muttered.

The doors to the competition hall opened, and the noise hit instantly, low murmurs, shuffling papers, the quiet tension of students who knew this wasn’t just another test.

This was it.

Regionals.

The one that determined rankings. Scholarships. Recognition.

Who mattered.Something i just needed.

I took a breath, stepping inside.

For a moment, everything else faded.

No Noah. No Madison.

No whispers.

Just numbers.

Just logic.

Just something I could still control.

Or at least…something I hoped I could.

  • Before We Were US   Chapter 24: The distance between us

Noah’s pov The first week in Atlanta was the hardest, healing was a relentless cycle; lift your arm, hold it , drop it … a continuous cycle, again and again .At first, I hated every single second of it.I’d spent my entire youth lifting heavy, running sprints until my lungs burned, and throwing forty-yard spirals on the money. Now? My physical therapist, a sharp woman named Karen who didn't take an ounce of my attitude, had me sitting on a foam bench trying to lift a two-pound rubber ball using only my right shoulder. My arm wouldn't even budge. It just trembled, locked in place like the signal had been completely cut off from my brain. It was embarrassing. It made my chest burn with a frustration that made me want to kick the equipment across the room."You're fighting it, Noah," Karen said one Tuesday morning, setting her clipboard down after watching me strain until my face turned red."It's two pounds, Karen," I grunted, my teeth clenched so tight my jaw hurt. "I used to bench

  • Before We Were US   Chapter 23: New beginnings

Noah’s pov I’d never been to Atlanta before.Dad kept both hands on the steering wheel as traffic crawled toward downtown, while I sat staring out the passenger window, trying not to think about why we were here. There were cars everywhere.Six lanes.Honking.Buildings so tall they blocked half the sky.It didn’t feel anything like Pine Ridge. It was the first time since the night at Sunset Bay that the reality actually settled heavily in my gut. I was out of Pine Ridge. For the first time since graduation, it hit me that home was hours behind us.I kept rubbing my thumb against the edge of my brace,I’d spent enough of my life in training rooms, locker lines, and ice baths to know what sterile walls looked like. I was just terrified of the answers waiting inside them. With football, I always had a plan. Learn the playbook; it meant that if you executed the assignment and read the coverage, you knew exactly where you were going to land on the field, trust your teammates and read the d

  • Before We Were US   Chapter 22: Home

The streets were almost empty by the time we left Sunset Bay.The heater hummed softly inside Shane’s car as the tires rolled over the quiet roads back towards the house. Dani had somehow managed to curl herself against the window in the back seat, her eyes half-closed despite insisting twenty minutes ago that she wasn’t tired.“Liar,” Shane muttered with a smile, glancing at her through the rearview mirror.“I heard that,” Dani mumbled without opening her eyes.“No, you didn't.”“I did.”“You were asleep.”“I was resting.”A laugh escaped me before I could stop it.The sound filled the car, light and effortless, and Noah turned his head toward me almost immediately.“What?” I asked. He shook his head.“Nothing.”His lips tugged into the smallest smile.“I just love hearing you laugh.”Heat rushed to my cheeks,I looked out the window before he could notice, but my fingers subconsciously tightened around the edges of his suit jacket. It was still draped over my shoulders, smelling fai

  • Before We Were US   Chapter 21: The first place I’d look

Noah’s POVNeither of us knew how to react, what to say, or what to do next. The words I’d just bleedingly confessed hung in the freezing air between us.The ocean filled the silence, waves rolling rhythmically onto the shore before dissolving into a hiss of white foam and retreating back into the night. I stood perfectly still, barely daring to breathe, my shoes slowly sinking into the damp sand. The biting coastal wind swept across the open bay, but right now, I couldn't feel the cold.My right hand was still locked in its brace against my chest, but my left hand remained at the nape of her neck, my fingers tangled slightly in her hair. Her small hands were still pressed flat against my shirt. I knew she could feel it,my heart hammering an erratic, frantic rhythm against her palms, beating so hard it felt like it was echoing out loud into the empty night. For months, maybe even years, if I was being completely honest with myself, I’d imagined telling Isla I loved her. I had run throu

  • Before We Were US   Chapter 20: One word at a time

Isla’s POV“The biggest mistake I ever made was pretending you were just my best friend.”The words settled between us, for a moment, the only thing I could hear was the ocean. The waves rolled in, crashing softly against the shore before retreating back into the darkness, as if the world hadn’t just completely shifted beneath my feet.I stared at Noah. His chest rose and fell unevenly. His hair was a wild mess from the wind. His tie hung loose around his neck, he looked exhausted and maybe “scared”.“I…” I swallowed, but my throat felt impossibly tight, choked . “I don’t know what to say.”He smiled, “You don’t have to say anything.”“No.” I shook my head, “You don’t get to do that.”His smile completely disappeared,so I took a closer look . “You don’t get to show up here in the middle of the night…” My voice trailed off, fighting the roar of the gale. A single tear burned through my cheek. “…say something I’ve wanted to hear for years, and then expect me to just stay silent.”Noah

  • Before We Were US   Chapter 19: Sunset Bay

Isla’s pov As the city lights disappeared behind me , the road became quiet. There was only one place left in the world I wanted to go to .Sunset Bay.It was the beach Mom used to take me to when I was little. Growing up, whenever Mom had a bad day at work, or had too much on her mind, she’d drive us out there with a bag of snacks and a big fuzzy blanket. We’d sit near the old wooden jetty for hours, watching the horizon until the sky turned purple.“Isla, love,” she’d always say, her fingers gently combing through my hair while I ate the snacks , “the beach has a way of making everything feel a little lighter.”Back then, I never understood what she meant. I was too young to understand that the vastness of the ocean could make human problems look beautifully small by comparison.Tonight, I think I finally did.The cab rolled to a stop near the gravel turnout at the beach entrance. I pulled a few folded bills from the pocket of my gown, handing them through the partition to the d
