Chapter 2

Author: Oliver
By the time I finished the purification and walked out, Kael was gone.

I thought he'd at least wait for me to wake up. But when I got to the door, I saw Lysandra had posted on the pack feed.

She was wearing Kael's jacket, sitting in his car, a bag of roasted fruit from the night market spread in front of her.

[The purification ritual was so boring. Good thing someone took me to the night market to unwind.]

I stared at that photo for a long time. Then I almost laughed.

Kael had a serious thing about cleanliness. Once I'd tracked a single leaf into the car and he wiped the seat down three times.

But Lysandra had roasted fruit crumbs all over the place, and he acted like he couldn't see a thing.

I didn't confront him. I just liked the post, then called the Elder in charge of Moon Vows.

"The date we reserved for Kael and me. Cancel it."

The Elder was clearly taken aback. "Haven't you two been preparing for a long time? What happened..."

I said quietly: "It's not needed anymore. I don't want to go through with it."

I left the healing cottage alone. I didn't wait for Kael to come back.

It was deep into the night when he finally pushed the door open. The cold coming off him filled the whole room.

"Ella, what is this? I looked everywhere for you at the healing cottage. You didn't even leave a word!"

"And you liked Lysandra's post? What are you trying to do?"

I looked at him. Suddenly I just felt tired.

The whole night I'd been in pain, and he never once asked me anything like this.

Lysandra trailed in behind him, speaking up softly on my behalf. "Kael, don't blame Ella. She just finished the purification. She's probably not feeling great."

"Oh, and I still need to register at the Elder Council tomorrow. You said you'd go with me, remember?"

Kael's face eased up right away.

The two of them started quietly planning tomorrow's schedule. They didn't even notice I'd already turned around and gone back to the bedroom.

The next morning, I woke up to a bowl of warm porridge on the table and a few pieces of the honey cake I used to love as a kid.

Kael was standing beside it, making a rare effort at patience. "I lined up before sunrise at the shop in the East District. Try it. It's still your favorite place."

I looked at the food. I didn't reach for it.

There was a time I'd waited an entire winter just to get honey cake from that shop.

Kael always said he was too busy to take me.

But he drove out of his way every single morning to bring some to Lysandra.

When exactly I'd stopped loving the taste, I couldn't even remember.

"About last night. I can explain."

"We just stayed up too late talking in the living room and fell asleep. Nothing happened."

Kael sat down next to me. He seemed to finally sense that something was off. He reached out to touch my shoulder.

I pulled away instinctively.

Underneath his familiar cold scent, there was still a trace of Lysandra's moon orchid perfume.

My stomach flipped. Even breathing felt unbearable.

I turned and ran to the bathroom, scrubbing the spot he'd touched over and over until my skin was raw and burning red.

Kael stiffened, then frowned. "She just borrowed my jacket last night. Is that really worth getting this worked up over?"

"Lysandra is way more normal than you. Sometimes I genuinely think you're unhinged."

"Your mother was the same way after that rogue marked her. Scrubbing herself over and over in the bathtub like she'd lost her mind. You picked that up perfectly."

My hands stopped mid-scrub. The water hammered against the sink basin, loud and sharp.

Back then, after my mother was forcibly marked by a rogue, my father dissolved their mate bond on the spot.

That night, my mother lay in the bathtub and cut her wrists. She grabbed my hand with the last of her strength and told me never to trust a word a man says.

I shook my head back then. I told her Kael was different. That he was good to me.

But hearing those words come out of his mouth now, I suddenly realized that all men are pretty much the same.

He didn't notice anything wrong with me. He just kept going.

"You always overthink things. Lysandra just awakened. She needs someone looking out for her. How is that not normal?"

I suddenly remembered all the times I'd made excuses for him.

I told myself he just had too much responsibility. Told myself Lysandra just needed help. I even told myself that once the Moon Vow was done, everything would change.

But that priority list had already given me the answer.

I looked up at him. Calm. "If she needs you that badly, then stay with her."

The irritation on Kael's face slowly froze.

I took a deep breath and said the words that had been coming for far too long.

"Kael, I'm not doing the Moon Vow."

"We're done."

Kael's feet stopped dead.He clearly didn't expect me to say that. Not in that voice. Not that calmly."Ella, over something this petty? You really had to say something that cruel?""Or is this about the money? If that's it, I can pay you back. All of it."He transferred a million on the spot.My phone buzzed. The deposit notification glared up at me.He looked down at me, that familiar hint of charity in his tone. "Enough?"The next second, I swung my hand and slapped him across the face as hard as I could. The wind went quiet. Nothing left but the sound of waves hitting the shore and my heart hammering in my chest.Kael ran his tongue along the inside of his cheek. The red mark bloomed across his face. He didn't lose his temper. He just looked at me, heavy and still."Or is it something else? Just say it. Whatever it is, I'll give you a proper answer. Then we move on."His voice was light. Casual. Like all I had to do was name the hurt, and he'd smooth it over with a few soft words.

Three months passed in the blink of an eye. After leaving the pack, my life turned out to be far more peaceful than I'd imagined.Shadow Pack gave me a new position. And something I'd never had before: freedom.I didn't have to sit around guarding a spot on a priority list that always ranked below Lysandra. I didn't have to wait for whatever scraps of time Kael felt like throwing my way. He'd transferred the frozen funds back into my account a while ago, with a short message: [I know you were set up. When are you coming back?]I stared at that line for a long time. But the ache I expected to feel never came.A late apology and a late realization are the same thing. Neither one can make a scar disappear. One calm afternoon, my phone buzzed. The Moon Vow officiant was calling."Miss Ella, we still need your confirmation on a few final details for your gown. We need to arrange for the silversmith to set the moonstones."I blinked. "Didn't I cancel the Moon Vow a long time ago?"The person

Kael stared at his phone. Something inside his head cracked apart.Ella hadn't just blocked his number. She'd severed their mind-link completely. That was supposed to be impossible. No matter how bad their fights had gotten, she had never once cut off their mind-link."How..."He refused to accept it. He tried calling again. No answer.A second time. Nothing. He swallowed down the panic rising in his chest and sent a message: [What happened earlier was a misunderstanding. I already know the truth. You don't need to shut yourself away. We can talk this through.]Silence.Lysandra stood beside him. A flicker of satisfaction crossed her eyes. But she quickly dropped her gaze and put on a worried face. "She must be really upset. Why don't I go with you tonight to find her?""I'll apologize to her myself. She's always been soft-hearted. I'm sure she'll forgive me."Kael didn't answer. For the first time, something inside him felt completely beyond his control.Because he knew Ella too well.

Kael sat in the council hall while Lysandra walked him through the pack affairs she'd taken over. She talked for a long time. He didn't hear a single word.Lysandra noticed him drifting and stopped. "Are you still thinking about Ella?"Kael didn't deny it. Just gave a low, quiet sound. He couldn't stop seeing the look in Ella's eyes right before she left. That terrifying calm."Did I actually get it wrong?""Would she really betray the pack?"He finally said it out loud. "She handled pack business for me for years. She never once leaked a single secret. Why would she suddenly hand classified intel to outsiders now?"Lysandra's fingers tightened for just a second. Then she put on a hurt expression."I don't want to believe she'd turn into that kind of person either. Maybe... she just couldn't accept me taking her place."Kael frowned. "That's not your fault. You were just trying to prove yourself."Before the words had fully settled, heavy footsteps echoed from outside the hall.Three j

The next day, I walked into the assembly hall as planned, ready to hand in my transfer request in person. The second I stepped through the doors, I felt the room shift. Several Elders who handled pack affairs were standing on either side, their eyes sliding away from mine, like they were looking at someone who'd already been found guilty.Kael sat on the high stone seat. His face was ice.Lysandra was standing right beside him. Eyes slightly red, like she'd been wronged. The moment she saw me, she rushed over and grabbed my wrist. Her voice was dripping with hurt."Ella, we've known each other for so long. How could you leak pack secrets to another tribe just because I took over your duties?""If you were unhappy, you could have just told me. I would have stepped down. Why would you do something that breaks pack law?"I yanked my hand free, brows knotted. "What the hell are you talking about? When did I touch your project files?""Last night, the border defense maps and the herb contra

Kael went still for a second, like he genuinely hadn't expected me to say it.But the shock passed fast. He scoffed. Pure contempt."Ella, what game are you playing now? This is just a new trick to force me into bonding, isn't it?"He leaned against the doorframe. "There's been a lot going on at the borders lately. I don't have time for this nonsense.""We'll talk about the Moon Vow when I've handled everything."I looked at him and almost laughed. He was busy, all right. Busy taking Lysandra to the Moon Forest for training. Busy bringing her to power trials. He even personally inspected the residence the Elder Council was setting up for her.And me, the woman who was supposed to be his mate, now had to wait until he was done dealing with Lysandra's business just to get a few words in.When he saw I'd gone quiet, Kael took it as surrender. His tone softened a little. "Good. Let's leave it here.""I have a border patrol tomorrow. I'll drop Lysandra off at the Elder Council on the way."
