Chapter 4

Author: A Little Cutie
The tip of the ears of that usually arrogant man suddenly turned red. Lara naturally slipped her arm through his and smiled sweetly.

The crowd immediately began to cheer.

“Come on, the mood is perfect now! Why don’t you two kiss?”

Hudson froze for a moment, and Lara quickly tried to smooth things over.

“Let’s not take things too far. Hudson here is a little shy–”

Before she could finish speaking, Hudson suddenly cupped her face and lowered his head, giving her a deep, affectionate kiss. It was brief—just a touch before they parted.

Hudson hadn’t even closed his eyes. He stared at Lara the entire time, trying to carve that moment into his memories. He looked so happy and content, as if that one kiss alone was enough for him.

The next second, worried that Lara might misunderstand, his ears flushed red. He forced himself to sound calm.

“I… I lost my balance.” Before Lara could say anything, he hurriedly added, “It’s late. We should head home. If I’m any later, my dad will start talking about family rules again.”

In this world, there was nothing rarer than the small bit of sincerity from a former playboy. Love was a touch and yet not a touch.

He and I were only a dozen meters apart. The cold wind whipped against my body, grinding the heart that had shattered into pieces into even finer dust. Hudson was walking with his head down when he suddenly bumped straight into me. The moment he looked up and saw my face, his eyes widened.

“Sorry, I–”

I cut him off. “It’s fine.”

Then, I turned and walked away, pulling out my phone to open a ride-hailing app.

Behind me, I heard confused voices from the crowd.

“Hey, she looks familiar. Hudson, isn’t that the gold digger who begged you for money during your engagement party?”

“Did she just try to steal something from you? You should check your wallet!”

Hudson said nothing to refute their slander.

By the time I got home, I pulled out my phone and paid for the ride. Just then, a notification popped up.

“Your booking for the international flight from Ocean City to Hosten has been confirmed. The departure time will be 3:00 p.m. tomorrow.”

I took a screenshot and sent it to the HR representative from the overseas company who had been coordinating with me.

Before I could say anything, the HR representative replied excitedly, “Sophie, I’ve been looking forward to this! We’ll be ready to welcome you tomorrow!”

My expression softened. If I couldn’t have love, then I could at least pursue my career.

After that, I picked up the suitcase I had packed and headed for the door. I didn’t want to stay in this house for even a second longer. However, just as I opened the door, I ran straight into Hudson.

He frowned and slammed the door shut with a loud bang. In a low voice, he asked, “Sophie, where are you going?”

Lara, who was following behind him, spoke in a falsely concerned tone. “Sophie, please don’t misunderstand. Hudson and I are just good friends. He only did it so as not to embarrass me tonight. Please don’t fight because of me… and don’t run away.”

I couldn’t be bothered to listen any longer. Calmly, I said, “Hudson, let’s break up.”

Hudson had been about to scold me for being jealous, but my words froze him for a second. Then, his eyes widened in shock.

“Break up? Just because Lara and I put on a little show together, you want to break up with me? Sophie, do you want a wedding or not?” he said, all choked up.

In his mind, he probably still believed I was madly in love with him, and that was why he was using the wedding to threaten me. In the past, I would have lowered myself for him because of that and begged him to stay with me forever. Now, I simply sneered.

“Hudson, you and I have nothing to do with each other anymore. What wedding would we be having?”

“Nothing to do with each other?” A layer of frost spread across Hudson’s face, and he said in a low voice, “That’s not what you said a month ago when you accepted my proposal. You said your dream was to marry me. And the ring you’re wearing–”

As he spoke, he frowned and began rummaging through drawers and cabinets, clearly trying to find the ring so he could throw it in my face.

Graham’s dark eyes were hard to read. In a calm, even tone, he issued a threat, “Hudson, do you really think it’s that easy to bring me down? If you don’t want the company anymore, stay here. I’ll find someone else to run it.”At his words, Lara panicked. She grabbed Hudson’s sleeve, pleading, “Hudson, look at how long this has gone on. It’s time to go back. Sophie isn’t worth all this!”Hudson hesitated, his eyes flicking toward me, but he straightened his back and said firmly, “If you won’t give it to me, then I don’t want the family inheritance. I just want to be with Soph! Soph isn’t like my mother. She won’t look down on me, whether I’m rich or poor!”That sentence hit a nerve in Graham’s heart. Years ago, he had misjudged someone, a gold-digger he like, only to be betrayed. She had cheated on him and even poisoned him and his son, nearly committing a double murder. For the first time, I saw the usually composed and elegant Graham show a ferocious expression. He sneered. “Fi

“Soph, I’ve divorced Lara. The news just hasn’t come out yet. Don’t avoid me.”His head pounded from the emotional ups and downs, and he closed his eyes tightly. However, his hands still gripped mine like he was afraid I’d run away.I couldn’t help but laugh and asked, “Hudson, is marriage all a joke to you?”Then, I gently placed his hands under the blanket.Seeing his panicked expression, I added, “I’ll get the doctor.”Only then did he relax, looking at me with a pitiful, puppy-like gaze. However, I didn’t go to the doctor. After leaving the ward, I immediately contacted Lara. The moment she picked up, her voice was sharp. “Sophie, are you calling just to show off? Don’t think that just because Hudson’s intrigued by your little games, you can be his wife. Dream on!”How ironic. Did she really think everyone was going after the position of his wife like she was?I calmly said, “Hudson got into an accident. Come and get him.”Only then did I fetch the doctor. The doctor repo

His resistance had been utterly powerless in front of Graham, and I knew I would never see Hudson again.Turning away, I passed through the gate and boarded the plane bound overseas. Inside my suitcase, I carried my grandma’s ashes. Looking at the city where I had lived for over thirty years, I waved goodbye.Gently touching the suitcase, I thought I could hear my grandma’s voice saying, “Wherever my granddaughter is, that’s where I’ll be.”After landing, the new company’s HR manager greeted me warmly and arranged a prime plot for my grandma’s burial. The female CEO, Ada Simmons, went even further by offering me a seven-figure annual salary. She had built her success step by step, earning a stellar reputation in the industry. She looked at me and smiled knowingly. “Sophie, when I saw you at that event three years ago, I knew you’d join my team one day.”I nodded and threw myself completely into my work.It was half a year later before I saw Hudson again. He walked out of the conf

[I’m coming for you right now! Stay where you are. Don’t move. Just wait for me!]I felt a mix of confusion and irritation. Without thinking too much, I tapped out a message. [Hudson, we’re over.]Then, I blocked him.At the airport, I waited a little longer before the boarding announcement echoed through the terminal. The plane was crowded, and I dragged my suitcase along, standing in line behind everyone.Just as I was about to pass through the gate, a sudden gasp came from behind. Instinctively, I turned toward where everyone’s eyes were fixed. Then, a tall figure lifted me off my feet.Hudson held me tight. My shoulder blades ached from the strength of his grip. He was breathing heavily, clearly in a rush. When he looked at me, he was smiling broadly.“Soph, let’s run away together!”His face was flushed from running, and his suit was creased. Despite the winter chill, he radiated energy, his features still sharp and handsome. Yet, for some reason, now that he was holding

His chest heaved as he waited for them to move on. Then, finally, he called out to me. “Hey, young lady, come over here. It won’t take more than a few minutes.”Since my resignation had been finalized, and I didn’t feel like defying him, I followed him into the conference room. Hudson and Lara came in behind me.Hudson’s face lit up with anticipation. “Dad, are you… Uh–”However, before he could finish, Graham kicked him squarely in the knee. Hudson collapsed to the floor immediately. I heard a sharp thud. Hudson clutched his knee, his face drained of color, cold sweat pouring down, but he didn’t dare utter a word of protest.Graham, meanwhile, berated him, “Hudson, have you gone mad? Not long ago, you cried and begged me, threatening to take your own life, just so that Lara would return to marry you! Now that she’s married to you, as you wished, you’re involved with someone else? You’re playing both sides!”He shoved Hudson slightly and continued, “Apologize to Lara and promise n

At those words, everyone in the room went even paler. After all, in their minds, I had always been the shameless woman clinging to Hudson, a relentless nuisance.I let out a sarcastic laugh. “Mr. Hudson, quit joking. The one you registered your marriage with is Ms. Lara. How do you expect her to feel with you saying that?”Lara’s face looked awful by then, and strangely, I felt a rush of satisfaction. Before this, it had always been me watching Lara flaunt herself in front of me, filling me with indignation. Now, finally, she was tasting a bit of that same humiliation.Hudson’s expression also soured, but he forced a smile. “Sophie, even if you leave me, where will you go? You’re over thirty years old. What company would hire you? Or… have you found another man?”I glanced at the office clock. With all that commotion, it was already eleven. If this argument dragged on, I’d miss my flight. So, I laid down my final ultimatum.“Mr. Hudson, I originally wanted a clean break, but if yo
