Chapter 6

Author: A Little Cutie
“I don’t want to play this game anymore.”

I picked up the bank card from the floor, stood up, and grabbed my suitcase. Then, I stepped right over the IOU slips scattered across the ground—the last things that proved there had ever been any connection between Hudson and me.

For a moment, Hudson looked stunned. When he saw my hand resting on the doorknob, he snapped out of it and quickly stepped forward to stop me.

“Soph, don’t be mad. Couples argue all the time. I just didn’t think before I spoke…”

I twisted the handle, opened the door, and walked out, never looking back.

At the hotel front desk, I took out my bank card to pay, but the receptionist informed me that my balance was insufficient. Embarrassed, I apologized and then used the twenty thousand dollars the overseas company had sent me as a travel allowance to cover the bill.

After tossing my luggage into the hotel room, I checked my bank account history. That was when I realized the money in my card had been gone for a long time. The transaction records showed payments to couples’ restaurants, romantic hotel suites, and luxury brand counters. Hudson had never spent money with me at any couple’s places, nor had he ever bought me gifts. It didn’t take much thinking to know who he had spent that money with.

Just then, the HR manager sent me a message.

[Sophie, if you’re in a hurry, see Mr. Hudson yourself tomorrow morning to get his signature.]

I replied with a simple okay. That night, I slept well.

Early the next morning, as I passed by the HR department, I saw Hudson’s tall figure standing there.

The HR manager was busy processing Lara’s onboarding paperwork while flattering her enthusiastically.

“Ms. Lara, Mr. Hudson treats you so well! The two of you are such a perfect match!”

Lara looked pleased with herself. Hanging prominently on her chest was a badge that read Vice President.

“Hudson, you’re making me dive straight into the company as a vice president. Won’t people say I got the job through connections? If I remember correctly, Sophie has been with you for seven years, and she’s only a manager of a department.”

Hudson didn’t care at all. He casually tucked a loose strand of hair behind Lara’s ear.

“You’re my wife. Who would dare gossip? Or… are you saying you don’t want to rely on my connections?”

The two of them looked exactly like a loving newlywed couple.

Since I had run into Hudson anyway, I figured it would save me another trip. So, I handed him my resignation letter.

“Mr. Hudson, please sign this.”

Hudson’s eyes lit up the moment he saw me. He slowly took the letter from my hand. After glancing over it, he let out a disappointed, mocking laugh.

“Resigning? Trying to act all proud, are you? Don’t forget your grandma’s poor health. With all her medical conditions, how long do you think your little bit of savings will last? You’ll be starving in no time.”

Lara smirked. “That’s right, Sophie. Don’t let a moment of stubborn pride affect your grandmother’s health.”

The HR manager, who had no idea what was going on, added, “But, Mr. Hudson, Sophie’s grandmother has passed on. She took a leave of absence from me just recently.”

Hudson froze. His fingers gripping my resignation letter were trembling slightly. He looked at my calm expression, and suddenly, guilt flashed in his eyes.

“You… Why didn’t you tell me?”

Seeing his evasive gaze, I suddenly remembered years ago, back when Hudson would chop firewood and cook for my grandma. His handsome face would be smudged black with soot, yet he would grin at me with bright white teeth, laughing happily.

Then, I remembered my grandma, tears in her eyes before she died, holding my hand as she said, “Sweetheart, I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have pushed you and Hudson to be together back then…”

With the piercing pain still lingering in my chest, I replied coldly, “Mr. Hudson, it was a private matter. Do I have to report it to you as well?”

Lara frowned and was about to scold me when Hudson suddenly grabbed my wrist and pulled me out of the HR department. His grip was so tight that my wrist turned red, and I could feel him trembling. Only when I hissed in pain did he abruptly let go.

He placed the resignation letter back into my palm, and for once, his tone softened.

Graham’s dark eyes were hard to read. In a calm, even tone, he issued a threat, “Hudson, do you really think it’s that easy to bring me down? If you don’t want the company anymore, stay here. I’ll find someone else to run it.”At his words, Lara panicked. She grabbed Hudson’s sleeve, pleading, “Hudson, look at how long this has gone on. It’s time to go back. Sophie isn’t worth all this!”Hudson hesitated, his eyes flicking toward me, but he straightened his back and said firmly, “If you won’t give it to me, then I don’t want the family inheritance. I just want to be with Soph! Soph isn’t like my mother. She won’t look down on me, whether I’m rich or poor!”That sentence hit a nerve in Graham’s heart. Years ago, he had misjudged someone, a gold-digger he like, only to be betrayed. She had cheated on him and even poisoned him and his son, nearly committing a double murder. For the first time, I saw the usually composed and elegant Graham show a ferocious expression. He sneered. “Fi

“Soph, I’ve divorced Lara. The news just hasn’t come out yet. Don’t avoid me.”His head pounded from the emotional ups and downs, and he closed his eyes tightly. However, his hands still gripped mine like he was afraid I’d run away.I couldn’t help but laugh and asked, “Hudson, is marriage all a joke to you?”Then, I gently placed his hands under the blanket.Seeing his panicked expression, I added, “I’ll get the doctor.”Only then did he relax, looking at me with a pitiful, puppy-like gaze. However, I didn’t go to the doctor. After leaving the ward, I immediately contacted Lara. The moment she picked up, her voice was sharp. “Sophie, are you calling just to show off? Don’t think that just because Hudson’s intrigued by your little games, you can be his wife. Dream on!”How ironic. Did she really think everyone was going after the position of his wife like she was?I calmly said, “Hudson got into an accident. Come and get him.”Only then did I fetch the doctor. The doctor repo

His resistance had been utterly powerless in front of Graham, and I knew I would never see Hudson again.Turning away, I passed through the gate and boarded the plane bound overseas. Inside my suitcase, I carried my grandma’s ashes. Looking at the city where I had lived for over thirty years, I waved goodbye.Gently touching the suitcase, I thought I could hear my grandma’s voice saying, “Wherever my granddaughter is, that’s where I’ll be.”After landing, the new company’s HR manager greeted me warmly and arranged a prime plot for my grandma’s burial. The female CEO, Ada Simmons, went even further by offering me a seven-figure annual salary. She had built her success step by step, earning a stellar reputation in the industry. She looked at me and smiled knowingly. “Sophie, when I saw you at that event three years ago, I knew you’d join my team one day.”I nodded and threw myself completely into my work.It was half a year later before I saw Hudson again. He walked out of the conf

[I’m coming for you right now! Stay where you are. Don’t move. Just wait for me!]I felt a mix of confusion and irritation. Without thinking too much, I tapped out a message. [Hudson, we’re over.]Then, I blocked him.At the airport, I waited a little longer before the boarding announcement echoed through the terminal. The plane was crowded, and I dragged my suitcase along, standing in line behind everyone.Just as I was about to pass through the gate, a sudden gasp came from behind. Instinctively, I turned toward where everyone’s eyes were fixed. Then, a tall figure lifted me off my feet.Hudson held me tight. My shoulder blades ached from the strength of his grip. He was breathing heavily, clearly in a rush. When he looked at me, he was smiling broadly.“Soph, let’s run away together!”His face was flushed from running, and his suit was creased. Despite the winter chill, he radiated energy, his features still sharp and handsome. Yet, for some reason, now that he was holding

His chest heaved as he waited for them to move on. Then, finally, he called out to me. “Hey, young lady, come over here. It won’t take more than a few minutes.”Since my resignation had been finalized, and I didn’t feel like defying him, I followed him into the conference room. Hudson and Lara came in behind me.Hudson’s face lit up with anticipation. “Dad, are you… Uh–”However, before he could finish, Graham kicked him squarely in the knee. Hudson collapsed to the floor immediately. I heard a sharp thud. Hudson clutched his knee, his face drained of color, cold sweat pouring down, but he didn’t dare utter a word of protest.Graham, meanwhile, berated him, “Hudson, have you gone mad? Not long ago, you cried and begged me, threatening to take your own life, just so that Lara would return to marry you! Now that she’s married to you, as you wished, you’re involved with someone else? You’re playing both sides!”He shoved Hudson slightly and continued, “Apologize to Lara and promise n

At those words, everyone in the room went even paler. After all, in their minds, I had always been the shameless woman clinging to Hudson, a relentless nuisance.I let out a sarcastic laugh. “Mr. Hudson, quit joking. The one you registered your marriage with is Ms. Lara. How do you expect her to feel with you saying that?”Lara’s face looked awful by then, and strangely, I felt a rush of satisfaction. Before this, it had always been me watching Lara flaunt herself in front of me, filling me with indignation. Now, finally, she was tasting a bit of that same humiliation.Hudson’s expression also soured, but he forced a smile. “Sophie, even if you leave me, where will you go? You’re over thirty years old. What company would hire you? Or… have you found another man?”I glanced at the office clock. With all that commotion, it was already eleven. If this argument dragged on, I’d miss my flight. So, I laid down my final ultimatum.“Mr. Hudson, I originally wanted a clean break, but if yo
