Chapter 40 – Contemplation

When Conrad woke up, Alice was sleeping soundly next to him. Her snoozing sound was adorable to hear. Also, she’s holding his hand, careful not to touch him in her sleep.

When he tried to move, he scrunched up his face from the pain that assaulted him. He lightly panted, which caused her to wake.

“You awake? Do you need anything?” She swiftly sat up and looked at him.

His throat was parched, though. Instead of speaking, he only managed a dry cough.

“I’ll get you water.” She scrambled off the bed and returned with a glass.

He grimaced as she propped him up on some pillows.

“Sorry. Is it too painful?”

He shook his head before drinking. He’s not used to this level of pain but he was prepared for it.

“How are you?” His words amused her.

“Better than you.” Her tone of reply made him smile.

They stared at each other for a while before she aske
