Chapter 6

Author: Zoe bear
“Reid… have you ever thought about starting your own company?”

It was nearly midnight when I asked, my voice low, but the question hung in the air like smoke. That was how Row was born—a single word whispered between two ambitious minds, one hungry for redemption, the other for success. A storm was quietly brewing beneath the surface of the business world, and it started with that name.

I transferred every penny I had saved from years of treating others—rogues, pack members, enemies alike—straight into Reid’s hands. Then I stared at my now pathetic bank balance. Single digits. Not even enough for a cab ride.

In my past life, I built Snow Moon Pack’s prestige with my own two hands—my skills, my healing, my connections. All of it had gone to them. And in the end, they’d let me die. Never again.

This time, I’d use those same assets to burn their empire to the ground.

But even with a master plan in motion, sleep didn’t come easy. Every time I closed my eyes, I saw Avery shoving poison down my throat, Lilith sneering at my suffering, and Kane—my fated mate—clutching my lifeless body as if his grief could reverse time.

I jolted upright, heart pounding, lungs tight.

I didn’t want to be alone.

So, I did something insane—I climbed over Kane’s courtyard wall in the dead of night and slipped into his bed like I belonged there.

As I nestled under the covers, his scent wrapped around me—crisp lime mixed with cold pine and something deeply comforting, like home I never had. He stirred but did not wake up. Instead, his arm instinctively pulled me close. The heat of his scars brushed against my cheek, and I melted into him.

For the first time in days, I fell asleep without nightmares.

---

When Kane woke the next morning, he was already warm—and not from the blanket.

His gaze drifted down to see me nestling against his chest, my golden curls spilling across his shoulder, my lips barely parted in sleep. Sunlight caught the tips of my lashes, casting shadows on my cheekbones.

Kane swallowed hard. Heat flushed through him, fast and wild.

He reached out to push me away but hesitated—his fingers instead brushing against my cheek, lingering far too long before gliding toward my lips. Just as his fingertips grazed them, I stirred.

“Mmm… don’t rub my head,” I mumbled groggily, “You’ll make me bald.”

Caught.

Kane yanked his hand away like he had been burned. His voice came out gruff. “Your room is next door.”

I sat up slowly, hair tousled, voice still thick with sleep. “We are already married. You want me to sleep alone forever?” I tilted my head, watching him squirm. “Are you rejecting me?”

He avoided my gaze, jaw clenched. “There is no emotional foundation between us. This… isn’t right.”

I leaned in, undeterred. “We are fated mates. Destiny already made the choice for us. The rest—we build.”

I was bluffing. My cheeks were on fire, and my heart would not stop pounding, but being in his arms had helped me sleep. I could not admit how much I needed that.

Then he said it—his voice dead serious.

“So, if we’re fated… does that mean it’s only natural for me to do what fated mates usually do in bed?”

My breath caught.

His gaze dropped pointedly to the tented sheet between us. I blinked. Heat exploded across my face.

“W-Wait,” I stammered, “Can that even… I mean, you… your legs…”

Kane looked like he wanted to sink into the mattress. “I may be injured, but I’m not dead below the waist.”

I clamped my hand over my face. “I mean, I didn’t check! How would I know—”

“Do you want to?” he challenged, half amused, half annoyed.

“Nope! I’m good!” I squeaked and scrambled out of bed. “I’m going downstairs! Take your time handling your… situation!”

Before I shut the door, I glanced back and caught a glimpse of his bandaged arm.

“Hope he doesn’t hurt the other one,” I thought, cheeks burning.

---

Downstairs, the table was already set and breakfast was waiting. The milk was still warm, and yet no one was around. Zack really was some kind of ghost butler. I wondered how Kane managed living here alone. Didn’t he get lonely?

I bit into a piece of toast just as the elevator hummed.

Zack.

I looked up at him, freshly changed and descending like royalty.

“You’re fast,” I blurted, then instantly regretted it.

His jaw tightened. “I am not.”

The double meaning hit me square in the face. I choked on my toast, eyes darting to the blanket covering his lap.

Flushed, I grabbed my milk and chugged it like it was holy water. “I have plans today! Busy, busy! Bye!”

I bolted out of the villa, toast in mouth, practically diving into the nearest cab.

I wasn’t just escaping him—I had a mission. Alpha Norman of the Moon Pack was in the hospital.

A critical business partner of the Snow Moon Pack.

Time to shake things up.

Justin sat at the flimsy table outside the convenience store, spreading the test paper out in front of him. His cocky expression faltered the second he read the first question.Blank. Completely blank. He blinked, squinting harder—nope, still didn’t make sense.“You’ve already done this test,” he muttered, his tone cold, like I’d somehow cheated.I shrugged. “I only answered the first three questions. You’ve got the rest. Unless... you’re saying you can’t handle them?” I paused, then added sweetly, “I can always ask the director to print a new one.”Checkmate. I’d blocked every excuse he could make.He clenched his jaw so tight I could almost hear his teeth grind. “I never said I wouldn’t do it.”The comment section on the livestream lit up:“Is Mia seriously doubting Justin’s intelligence? She’s just an art school student!”“She got 715 on the entrance exam—she has every right!”“715? Big deal. That’s not genius-level.”“Mia’s just targeting Justin again. So annoying!”“Let’s not pret

"I’m going to ask Justin to tutor me!" Nydia blurted, already halfway down the path before her grandmother could even shout after her.In my earpiece, the director’s voice chimed in with forced enthusiasm."Follow her, Mia. Don’t miss this drama."Of course, he wanted fireworks—the golden boy idol vs. the disgraced heiress. All for a tutoring gig.I sighed and followed the old woman, already predicting how this mess would unfold. When we got to the convenience store, a gruff, bald man—mid-50s, beady eyes—was sizing up Justin and Lilith like they were tools he might use or toss."You two want to work together? Fine," he said, pointing at Justin. "The guy can haul gas, water, and rice. The girl stays here with me—minds the counter, cleans, and helps in the warehouse."His gaze lingered on Lilith a beat too long.Lilith stiffened instantly, her grip on Justin’s arm tightening.“I don’t want to be separated from my brother," she whispered, her voice shaking. The thought of being trapped in

Nydia crossed her arms and shouted; her voice shrills with teenage indignation.“If you trick my grandma again, Mia, I swear I’ll call the cops!”The old woman’s eyes widened. Her cane shot up faster than expected for her age.“How dare you!” she barked, aiming it squarely at her granddaughter’s backside.Nydia ducked. “Grandma! I’m your actual granddaughter! Why are you defending a con artist?”The old woman pointed her cane like a sword.“What con artist? Mia didn’t even take a penny from me!”Nydia froze, clearly expecting the opposite. Her voice softened, but only slightly.“She didn’t... take anything?”“Exactly! Now apologize!”“I won’t!” Nydia’s pride was ironclad. Mia was someone her idol hated, and she wasn’t about to grovel to her.I folded my arms, growing annoyed. Seriously? All this over a box of dry corn cakes?“I only took some snacks—barely five dollars’ worth. Call me, broke, fine. But I’m not a freeloader,” I said evenly. The grandma’s face wrinkled with concern.“You

The director stood in front of the cast, clipboard in hand and a mischievous smile tugging at his lips. “Alright, folks. Time to hand out your wages from your last shift. Step forward when your name is called.”“Duke, $200. Comment: Your look fits the role of a sanitation worker perfectly.”Duke grinned, flaunting his cash. “Told y’all. Like fine wine—I get better with age!”“Giselle, $100. Comment: Worked three days, lazed two. Most of the time, you were panting like you’d run a marathon.”“Excuse me!” Giselle huffed. “Have you seen me? I’m not built for cardio!”“Justin, $0. Comment: Letting fans do your work doesn’t count.”Justin’s jaw clenched. He never asked them to help—those fans just showed up with brooms and devotion. Still, it didn’t matter now. Zero dollars spoke louder than his pride.“Lilith, $50. Comment: Didn’t complete assigned tasks.”Her eyes welled up, and she turned away. How was it her fault she got injured? Who even wrote these comments?“Josephson, $50. Comment:

“No way. Mia’s too much of a coward to take down an attacker. She wouldn’t even stay in the haunted house!”“Get real. Just because she swapped rooms with Justin doesn’t mean she’s scared of ghosts. That’s not the same as being afraid of dying.”“Mia’s a badass! She literally ambushed a knife-wielding maniac. Queen behavior.”“I’m sold. I need her X account ASAP—someone drop the link!”“Gill just tagged her! New account, barely any followers—everyone go follow her now!”“Welcome to the Mia fandom! You won’t regret investing in her.”I scrolled through the comments, stunned. My X account—newly created by Gill without telling me—was blowing up. One post, one contract, and now I have two hundred thousand followers. Every few seconds, that number climbed.Meanwhile, Justin stood frozen, staring at the surveillance footage like he was seeing it for the first time. And maybe he was. From a third-person perspective, the video was brutal: me slipping behind the assailant, catching him off guar

Why did she save him?Of all people… Why him?Justin’s mind spun with questions, but none came with answers. Guilt gnawed at him like rust. She should’ve hated him—after everything. And yet, she’d thrown herself into danger for him. Why?He wanted to ask her. Needed to. But the words felt foreign on his tongue. So instead, he said nothing. Pretended it never happened. Pretended he hadn’t watched her bleed for him.But now, seeing her dragged through the mud online—because of him—made him sick. They twisted the knife wound she earned protecting him into something scandalous and vile.He parted his lips, about to speak, to tell the truth—RING.The director’s phone cut through the tension like a blade. He answered, nodded slowly, then exhaled.“Alright. The issue’s been clarified. Let’s resume filming today’s episode.”Josephson scoffed.“Clarified?” he laughed coldly. “Mia’s scandal is all over the internet. If you let her stay, she’ll tank the entire show.” He stood tall, chin lifted l
