“Ezra… What have I done?” Louelita’s voice was hoarse from crying, her throat raw from the sobs she had been holding in for hours. Her hands trembled as she clutched Ezra’s arm, her nails digging into his skin as though anchoring herself to him would stop the world from crashing down around her.

Ezra, unfazed by the panic in her voice, simply cupped her face with both hands, his thumbs gently wiping the tears that streamed down her cheeks. His sharp blue eyes, usually cold and calculating, softened as he looked at her.

“You did what was right, Vita Mia.” His voice was steady, full of certainty. “And now, it’s my turn to take care of everything.”

Louelita shook her head, fresh tears spilling onto his fingers. “But… but Ezra, you don’t understand! I didn’t just expose corrupt politicians in the Philippines—I handed over files that could bring down entire governments! Illegal arms trades, human trafficking routes, drug syndicates… I connected the dots, and now those bastards know I’m the

“She’s my mom! She’s my mom! Please, she’s my mom!” Louie’s voice cracked, trembling with tears that refused to stop. His small arms clutched Mayumi Lagros with a desperate strength, as if holding her would somehow make her his mother and make everything okay. His tiny fingers dug into her clothes, clutching her tightly, refusing to loosen even as Ezra tried to pry him away.Ezra’s face was tight with frustration. He gently but firmly removed Louie’s arms from around Mayumi’s waist, but the child’s grip was relentless. Louie’s sobs grew louder, muffling any words Ezra tried to say. “Louie, listen to me.” Ezra’s voice was strained and worn out. “She’s not your mother. You have to let go now.”But Louie only tightened his hold, burying his face into Mayumi’s skirt, crying harder. His small body shook with each sob. Ezra’s patience snapped. His voice rose, sharp and exhausted. “Louie! Stop it! I told you! She is not your mother!”Louie’s crying turned into wails, tears streaming down

The tension was there as Ezra’s footsteps echoed softly against the marble floor of his private villa. The morning sun cast long shadows through the tall windows, illuminating the sleek modern decor that contrasted sharply with the chaos inside his mind. “Are you sure about this?” Ezra’s voice was low, almost a whisper, but edged with a hint of concern. The assistant hesitated for a moment before responding, “Yes, sir. The first candidate is waiting in the other room. She seems... promising.”Ezra nodded, though his mind wasn’t entirely convinced. He took a deep breath, feeling a strange sense of relief today—an emotion he couldn't quite grasp. Maybe it was the quiet that settled over the villa now. Maybe it was knowing that Louie was still peacefully asleep, unaware of the storm brewing inside his father’s mind. He sank into his chair, tall and commanding, the kind of presence that made people tremble if they weren’t careful. Without a word, he waved to his assistant to bring the

“Louie, stop hiding behind the curtains! I swear, one more prank, and I’ll—” Ezra’s voice echoed with frustration as he stared at his mischievous son with a mixture of exasperation and affection. Louie’s wide, innocent eyes sparkled with mischief as he peeked out from behind the heavy velvet drapes, clutching a handful of colorful socks he had just pulled out of the laundry basket. “You’re just mad because you can’t catch me, Dad!” Louie giggled, his voice high and clear, a wide grin stretching across his face.Ezra took a deep breath, feeling the familiar tightness tighten in his chest. “Louie, I’ve told you a hundred times—no more pranks. It’s not funny anymore. It’s making everyone leave, including the nannies, and I don’t want that.”Louie’s grin faltered just a little. “But I’m just playing. They always run away before I even do anything bad.” His eyes twinkled with innocence, but Ezra knew better. Louie’s mischief was a shield—an act of defiance, perhaps, or a way to keep himse

“Stop, Louie! Don’t touch that!” Ezra Velleotti’s voice thundered through the lavish hall, sharp and commanding. His eyes flashed with frustration as he hurried toward his four-year-old son, who was already reaching for a fragile antique vase perched precariously on a side table. Louie, with his tiny fingers grasping the porcelain, looked up at his father with a mischievous grin. “But I wanna see if it’s heavy,” he said innocently, tilting his head, eyes sparkling with defiance.Ezra’s jaw clenched tight, his fists clenching at his sides. “You don’t touch what you’re told not to. Do you understand?” His voice was low, dangerous. Louie pouted, then crossed his arms defiantly. “It’s not heavy. I can carry it!”Ezra’s breath hitched. That stubborn streak—exactly like his wife’s. Louelita had always been stubborn, full of life, unafraid of testing limits. Now, watching Louie test his patience made Ezra’s chest hurt. He stepped forward quickly, snagging the vase out of Louie’s grip befo

“Tell me again,” Ezra hissed, voice low and dangerous, as he leaned close to Robert Bistado's battered face. “How many times did you steal from us?”Robert groaned, blood trickling from the corner of his mouth. His eyes, swollen and bruised, flickered with a mixture of fear and defiance. “I... I don’t know what you’re talking about,” he rasped, voice trembling.Ezra’s fist clenched tightly around the man's collar. “You’re lying,” he growled, the anger bubbling beneath his skin. “You’ve crossed too many lines, Robert. You've betrayed the Velleotti Mafia, and that’s a mistake you won’t live to regret.”The room was silent except for Robert’s ragged breathing and the faint drip of blood onto the cold stone floor. Ezra’s eyes gleamed with a savage hunger, a darkness that had grown over months of pain and loss.“Your betrayal cost me everything,” Ezra said softly, almost whispering. “I lost Louelita. My wife. My reason for breathing. And now, I’m going to make sure you suffer just as much-

“I miss her too, Papa,” Louie said, his small hand clutching Ezra's fingers tightly. The child’s big brown eyes mirrored the pain that had become a permanent fixture in Ezra’s heart. They stood at the grave, a mound of earth adorned with wilting flowers, remnants of a love that had once bloomed. Ezra knelt, his knees sinking into the cool grass, feeling the sharpness of the moment prick at him. “I know, champ. I know,” he murmured, his voice thick with emotion. “But… we have to be strong, right? For her.”“But it’s not fair,” Louie said, his voice rising in frustration. “Why did she have to leave us? Why can’t she just come back?”Every time Louie asked those questions, it felt like a knife twisting in Ezra's gut. He hated the helplessness that enveloped them, the unanswered questions that danced in the back of his mind like ghosts refusing to fade. “Life isn’t always fair,” Ezra replied, forcing a calmness that he didn’t truly feel. “Sometimes, bad things happen to the best people.”
