Chapter One

Kale growled, low and guttural, as he shoved open the door to his chamber. His body trembled with tension, barely containing the force building within.

The time had come again. The moon was high, and with it came the surge, the natural frenzy that gripped every fiber of his being and refused to let go.

His blood pulsed with primal heat. This wasn’t a curse. This was who he was.

A demon.

And tonight, the hunger inside him screamed louder than ever.

His vision swam with shadows as his pupils dilated, distorting the world around him. He stumbled into the darkness of the room, reaching blindly for the bed to ground himself. But instead of fabric, his fingers brushed soft, warm skin. A body. A person.

He snarled, his face twisting into a scowl, lips pulled back as he loomed over her.

“Who are you?” he demanded, voice ragged, distorted by the demon rising in his throat.

The girl flinched, her bound limbs twitching beneath the sheets. She tried to sit up, but the blindfold over her eyes left her helpless. Her voice quivered as she pleaded.

“Please… let me go.”

Kale didn’t answer. He tore through the ropes binding her wrists and ankles with ease, the strands falling apart like paper in a flame. Then he climbed onto the bed, looming over her trembling form. His muscles quaked, aching with the need to release. She had to be the one they prepared for him

who else would be in his room during the frenzy?

She whimpered beneath him, thrashing as panic gripped her. Her voice cracked with fear, her breath stuttering as she cried out. But Kale ignored her pleas. He had done this before. Many times. The frenzy demanded a vessel. A release. Human girls were often sacrificed to quell the demon within him, if only for a night.

But this one was different.

His hands pinned her easily, ignoring her fight. As her scent rose to his nose, something shifted. He stared down at her throat, delicate, vulnerable, pulsing with life. The frenzy narrowed his vision until her neck was the only clear thing in the room.

A deep growl rumbled from his chest as his eyes blazed a searing crimson. Dark veins writhed up from his collarbones, spreading across his face like lightning scars. His skin burned with the fever of the change.

Katrina screamed louder now, jerking her head side to side, her voice trembling with horror.

She couldn’t see him, but she could feel his weight pressing her down, his hands like iron against her skin. Her blindfold grew damp with tears.

Kale’s lips hovered near her throat. His breath was hot, ragged. He parted his lips, fangs gleaming in the dark. The demon within him roared for blood.

But just as his mouth touched her skin an invisible force surged between them.

A jolt, violent and unearthly, struck through his body. His head snapped back with a gasp.

He growled louder, but it was not the sound of hunger now it was confusion, disorientation. The frenzy paused. Something wasn’t right.

Katrina trembled beneath him, sobbing harder now, the monstrous sound of his voice breaking what little hope she had left. She thought she would die at the hands of some beast but instead, nothing happened.

Kale’s hands were still on her, but he didn’t bite.

The crimson glow in his eyes dimmed slightly, though the dark veins remained. His chest heaved as he tried to make sense of what had just occurred. The insatiable heat that usually consumed him this time of the month… was fading. Being replaced by something else.

He looked down at her, truly looked and for the first time in five centuries, he felt… curious.

This had never happened before.

Kale inhaled deeply. Her scent struck him like a wave. Soft. Sweet. Unlike any other human he had encountered.

There was no bitterness of fear or iron of blood in it. It was… soothing. Addictive.

He let go of one wrist, holding her gently now, not wanting to break her now. His head dipped lower, brushing the edge of her shoulder, and he breathed her in again.

The more he took in, the calmer he became. The pressure in his chest loosened. His claws retracted. His heartbeat slowed.

The dark veins slowly faded back beneath his skin. His crimson eyes softened into a deep, glowing forest green.

He exhaled, shaken by the calm overtaking his senses. It was like nothing he’d ever felt during the frenzy. For the first time, the storm had not taken him over.

Reaching for the blindfold, he slowly pulled it away from her eyes.

Katrina tensed, expecting pain, humiliation, death. But as the cloth was lifted, she hesitated. She blinked into the dim light, lashes fluttering. And then she saw him.

Not a beast.

A man.

A breathtakingly beautiful man with fierce, glowing eyes and sculpted features. Her fear didn’t vanish, but it stilled long enough for confusion to rise in its place.

He stared at her like she was some ancient relic a mystery he couldn’t decipher.

“Looks like you’re going to survive tonight" he murmured, voice low and hypnotic.

The words washed over her like a song, blurring at the edges. Before she could fully process them, his lips claimed hers.

It was not rough, not violent it was possessive. Wild. Magnetic. Her breath caught in her throat as his kiss deepened.

Her arms rose as though under a spell, wrapping around him. She gave in without resistance, her body surrendering in an unspoken invitation.

The door creaked open three hours, Richard, Kale’s assistant, stepped inside. His eyes widened in disbelief.

Kale… was in bed. With a woman. Not covered in blood. Not unhinged. Just there.

Richard stared, stunned.

“I thought she ran off with the money” he muttered, more to himself than anyone else.

Kale stirred, eyes opening slowly. He sat up, calm, collected unchanged.

“Are you alright?” Richard asked, eyeing the girl beneath the covers.

Kale nodded. “I am. But she’s not.”

He had gone too far. Even without the frenzy in full, she was only human. She couldn’t withstand what he was. Not completely.

“Take care of her,” he ordered, rising from the bed. As he stood, a new set of clothes shimmered into existence over his frame. Richard blinked again, still struggling to grasp what he was seeing.

“Where did you find her? How much did she ask for?”

Kale froze.

He turned slowly, voice low, dangerous.

“You didn’t prepare her?”

Richard’s face paled. “No, I thought she wasn’t supposed to...”

Kale turned his head, eyes narrowing. He looked back at the girl in the bed, tangled in sheets, trembling in sleep.

“If you didn’t send her… how the hell did she end up in my room?”

His voice had dropped to a growl, something dark coiling beneath his words.

Richard stepped back instinctively.

Kale’s eyes glowed again but this time, it wasn’t frenzy.
