They didn’t take me back to the courtyard.

They took me to a cell.

Not a dungeon—at least not officially. But it might as well have been.

Stone walls. Iron door. A single narrow window high above that let in a thin strip of daylight that never stayed long enough to matter.

I stood in the center of the room, arms folded tightly around myself.

Waiting.

For what, I didn’t know.

The silence pressed against my ears until it felt like it had weight.

Then the door opened.

I didn’t turn immediately.

I already knew who it was.

The air changed before footsteps even followed.

Alpha Kael Draven entered without announcement, without escort, without hesitation.

Just him.

The door closed behind him.

Click.

The sound felt final.

My stomach tightened.

“I didn’t do anything wrong,” I said immediately, turning to face him. My voice came out sharper than I intended. Fear always disguised itself as anger when it had nowhere to go.

Kael didn’t respond right away.

He studied me instead.

Not like a prisoner.

Not like an omega.

Like a problem he hadn’t solved yet.

“You are not here for punishment,” he said finally.

“That doesn’t make this feel any better,” I replied.

A faint pause.

Then: “It is not meant to.”

That answer irritated me more than I expected.

I stepped forward before I could stop myself. “Then why am I here?”

Kael’s gaze dropped—briefly—to my arm.

The mark.

It had been quiet since the hall.

Too quiet.

Like something holding its breath.

“You were unstable in the courtyard,” he said. “I needed you contained.”

“Contained,” I repeated slowly. “So I’m a threat now?”

His eyes lifted back to mine.

“You are unknown,” he corrected.

“That’s worse,” I muttered.

Silence stretched again.

But this time it wasn’t empty.

It was heavy.

Charged.

Something between us pressed tighter than before—like an invisible thread pulling in both directions at once.

I hated that I could feel it so clearly now.

I hated even more that part of me didn’t want it to stop.

Kael moved deeper into the room.

The space was small enough that it immediately felt smaller with him inside it.

“I need to see it again,” he said.

My body went rigid.

“See what?”

“The mark.”

My hand instinctively went to my sleeve.

“No.”

The word came out fast.

Sharp.

Instant.

Kael didn’t react to the refusal. He simply stopped moving.

“You do not understand what it is,” he said.

“Then explain it,” I shot back.

A pause.

Then he said something I didn’t expect.

“I cannot.”

That made me freeze.

Even Kael Draven had limits.

Even he didn’t have answers.

My voice lowered. “So you dragged me here… for something you don’t understand?”

His jaw tightened slightly.

“I did not drag you here,” he corrected. “The bond did.”

My chest tightened.

That word again.

Bond.

I exhaled slowly, forcing myself to stay steady. “If there’s a bond, then why does it feel like pain instead of… whatever it’s supposed to feel like?”

Kael’s eyes darkened slightly at that.

A flicker of something passed through them—something restrained, tightly controlled.

“It is not complete,” he said.

“Great,” I muttered. “So I’m incomplete and trapped. Perfect situation.”

A faint tension moved through him at my tone.

But he didn’t react outwardly.

Instead, he took another step closer.

I didn’t step back.

I refused.

That seemed to irritate him more than fear would have.

“You are resisting it,” he said.

“Of course I am,” I replied. “Why wouldn’t I resist something that drags me into a cell and calls me unstable?”

His gaze sharpened.

“It is not dragging you,” he said. “It is responding to you.”

I laughed once, humorlessly. “That makes it sound even worse.”

Kael stopped in front of me.

Close.

Too close.

I could see the faint tension in his jaw now. The restraint in his posture. The way his control wasn’t as effortless as it looked from a distance.

“You feel it,” he said quietly.

My breath caught.

I hated that he was right.

But I didn’t answer.

That was answer enough.

A long silence followed.

Then Kael lifted his hand slightly.

Not touching me.

Just near.

Hesitation.

Something I didn’t think I would ever see from him.

“I need to confirm something,” he said.

My throat tightened. “Confirm what?”

His gaze flicked to my arm again.

“The mark is reacting to proximity,” he said.

My stomach dropped.

“No,” I said immediately. “No, don’t—”

Too late.

The moment he closed the distance by half a step—

Pain exploded through my arm.

I gasped, stumbling back instantly, my back hitting the stone wall.

Fire.

It wasn’t just burning—it was writing itself into me. The mark on my skin flared, glowing brighter than before, lines spreading like ink dragged through flesh.

I cried out before I could stop it.

Kael moved instantly.

Not toward me.

Away.

As if the reaction itself were dangerous.

The pain spiked—then suddenly dropped.

Not gone.

Just… controlled again.

My breathing was uneven, sharp, and disoriented.

“What… what is that? ” I whispered.

Kael stared at my arm.

For the first time, something like certainty flickered in his expression.

Then it vanished.

“I was correct,” he said quietly.

“That is not helpful,” I snapped weakly, still catching my breath.

He ignored that.

The silence that followed was different now.

Heavier.

More real.

Because something had just been proven.

And neither of us liked it.

Before I could speak again, the door outside the cell slammed open.

Voices.

Fast. Urgent.

“Alpha!”

A guard appeared in the doorway, breathing hard.

Kael didn’t turn immediately.

“What is it?”

“Border breach,” the guard said quickly. “Rogue wolves. The south perimeter is under attack.”

The air shifted instantly.

The temperature of the room felt like it dropped.

Kael’s attention snapped away from me immediately.

War replaced everything.

But before he left, his eyes returned to me once more.

Sharp.

Measuring.

“Do not move,” he ordered.

I blinked. “Like I have anywhere to go.”

That earned the faintest reaction from him.

Not amusement.

Something closer to acknowledgement.

Then he was gone.

The door shut behind him.

Silence returned.

But it wasn’t empty anymore.

It felt alive.

I stood there for a moment, staring at the closed door.

Then I slowly looked down at my arm.

The mark had dimmed.

But it was still there.

Pulsing faintly.

Like it was waiting.

Like it had awakened.

And I suddenly understood something I didn’t want to understand.

This wasn’t just about Kael.

It was about what I was becoming.

For a heartbeat, no one spoke. The only sound was the distant clash of steel echoing through the ancient halls of the Archive. The hunters had broken through. And they were coming for me.Kael's hand remained firmly on my shoulder, steadying me after the vision. His grip wasn't painful. It was grounding, reminding me that I wasn't facing this alone."Are you alright?" he asked quietly.I nodded, though my knees still felt weak."I'll be fine."He searched my face for a moment, as if trying to decide whether to believe me. Finally, he gave a small nod and turned toward Darius."How long before they reach this chamber?"The Beta listened carefully to the sounds outside."Five minutes. Maybe less."Kael's jaw tightened."We don't have much time."Before anyone could speak again, Malachar stepped forward."You can still avoid this."Kael's eyes narrowed."By handing her over?""No."The Keeper shook his head."By listening."Elarion let out a bitter laugh."You expect us to trust you afte

"So... the Mark Bearer has finally come home."The voice echoed through the darkness.Cold.Calm.Familiar in a way that made my skin crawl. The torches lining the corridor had gone out all at once, leaving only the faint blue glow from the crystal chamber behind us. Long shadows stretched across the stone floor, making it impossible to see who stood at the other end of the hall.Kael stepped in front of me before I could react. His sword was already drawn."Darius," he said quietly."I know."The Beta moved to my left while two Blackridge warriors took my right. "Run!"Kael's voice echoed through the corridor. The ground shook beneath our feet.Dust poured from the cracked ceiling as another deafening roar thundered through the Archive. It wasn't the roar of a wolf.It was deeper.Older.The sound carried anger that had slept for centuries. For one terrifying second, no one moved. Then the glowing red eyes blinked. The creature stepped out of the darkness.I forgot how to breathe. It stood nearly twice Kael's height. Black scales covered its body instead of fur, and long silver horns curved backward from its head. "You're lying."The words left my mouth before I could stop them. The silence inside the Archive grew heavy.Ancient books lined the stone shelves from floor to ceiling, but suddenly they felt like silent witnesses instead of records. The old scholar, Elarion, didn't flinch. He simply looked at me with tired eyes."I wish I were."I shook my head."No."I stepped back from the open book on the table.
