06 - The Girlfriend

last update Date de publication: 2026-04-08 19:01:50

Kassidy's POV

I still couldn't wrap my head around the fact that Eli's girlfriend was moving in. He had such audacity! Had he forgotten that he'd had sex with me just last night? How was I supposed to deal with this crushing guilt?!

I sat on my bare mattress and turned that sentence over in my head a few times, trying to make it feel less insane than it was.

And now, I was going to be housemates with his girlfriend.

I pressed both hands flat against my face.

I had been so caught up in the heat of the argument last night, so desperate to stop feeling small, that I hadn't stopped to think about any of it. Not the girl in the kitchen, nor Nova, or the fact that Eli Deering was clearly the kind of man I should stay away from.

I was such an idiot.

A soft knock at my door made me yank my hands off my face.

"Kassidy?" It was Nova. "I just wanted to check that you have everything you need in here. Eli mentioned that the room was a little bare when you moved in."

I opened the door. She was standing in the hallway with a genuine smile on her face, and I felt so deeply ashamed of myself that I almost couldn't look at her directly.

"I'm fine," I replied. "Thank you, Nova."

"Are you sure? I brought extra towels from the car, I always overpack them." She chuckled and held out two folded towels. "Take them, seriously, I have more than I need."

I took them because refusing twice in one evening felt rude. "That's really kind of you."

"Of course." She nodded her head. "You're pre-law, right? Eli mentioned it."

"He did?"

"Just that there was a new housemate starting pre-law. It's a brutal track, honestly. My roommate back in Wisconsin was pre-law, and she never slept."

Before I could respond, Eli appeared at the end of the hallway. His eyes went from Nova to me, and a look of alarm flashed across his face. Was he scared that I'd tell Nova the truth about what happened last night?

"Nova." He called her name lightly. "Come see what Marcus did to the living room."

"Oh, I'm sure it's terrible." She laughed and turned back to me. "Come and find us when you're less busy, okay?"

She went down the hallway toward Eli. As she passed him, he glanced back at me over her shoulder, and from the look on his face, I knew he meant to say, "Stay away from her."

I smiled just as quietly back at him. I'll go wherever I damn well please.

His lips curled in annoyance. Then they were gone. I shut my door, changed out of my wet clothes, dried my hair with one of Nova's towels, and sat on my bare mattress because I still hadn't gotten new sheets. I stared at the ceiling for a long time. Outside my window, the rain had slowed to a drizzle.

I opened my laptop and forced myself to look at the lecture notes from today's classes. Pre-law was not going to study itself, and if I fell behind in the first week, I would never catch up. Again, I was not about to let Eli Deering dismantle my life.

By the time evening arrived, I was hungry enough that my stomach had started making its feelings very known. I hadn't eaten a single thing all day. I picked up my phone and ordered a large Domino's pizza, because it was the only thing I could afford right now.

The living room was occupied by the time I drifted out to wait for my order. Marcus and Devon were sprawled on the larger sofa, arguing about something on the television. Jay was stretched across the armchair with his eyes half closed. Celeste was sitting rigidly at the far end of the room, and her legs were crossed.

"I'm just saying that if Jay is going to snore like a dying animal every single night, I am requesting a room transfer. I have not slept properly in three days!" Celeste announced to the room.

"You don't even share a room with Jay," Devon pointed out.

"The walls are thin, Devon."

"She's on the other side of the hall," Marcus said to no one in particular.

"The walls," Celeste repeated, enunciating each word, "are thin."

I found an empty chair and sat down quietly. So Celeste lived here too. Of course, she did!

Nova came in from the kitchen carrying a small bowl and settled next to Eli on the other sofa. Marcus immediately shuffled over to make space for her, like it were a reflex.

"Someone should please tell him about the snoring thing," Celeste sounded desperate.

Nova quickly said, "I actually didn't notice any snoring."

Celeste glared at her. "You've been here for three hours."

"Doesn't matter," Replied Nova coldly.

The temperature in the room dropped half a degree. I didn't miss the terrible, subtle look both ladies gave each other. From what I've gathered in the few hours that I've known Nova, I knew she was nice, but Celeste... Well...

The conversation moved around me, and I sat in it quietly, catching pieces. Nova was at Lawrence in Wisconsin, studying communications. If I was not mistaken, the university costs more per year than most people make in three years. Nova came from old money, apparently.

I also caught the news that she and Eli had been together on and off for two years. Nova talked easily, laughed at the right moments, remembered people's names, and used them. Old money, absolutely.

"Oh, Kassidy." Nova turned to me suddenly. "Do you want to try some? It's pinchos, my mother packed them."

"I already ordered pizza. But thank you."

"Domino's on day two of college," Eli said from across the room without actually looking at me. "Bold financial decision."

The room laughed lightly. I smiled too, because what else was I going to do? Only Eli and I knew what that sentence actually meant.

Twenty minutes later, my order arrived, and I walked to the front door and collected it. The box was warm in my hands, and it smelled incredible. I had not eaten since yesterday, and I was very close to crying with relief.

I said goodnight to the room without looking at Eli, and went upstairs.

Setting the box on my dresser, I stepped into my bathroom and took a long shower. By the time I stepped out, I was wrapped in a towel and already thinking about the pizza waiting on my desk, and whether I should eat it in bed or at the desk.

But when I pushed open the bathroom door and walked into my room, Eli was there.

Eli Deering was in my room.

I tightened the towel around myself and said nothing. Neither did he!

  • Best Friend’s Brother Shouldn’t Know How I Taste    30 - Can I

Kassidy's POVI sat through the rest of that evening with a smile nailed to my face. That might have been one of the hardest thing I had done since moving to Minnesota. It was all I could do not to cross the room and shut Richard Deering up with my fist. This man talked and talked, and everyone else on the room laughed, nodded and hung on every word he said. All I could do was sit down there, watching him hold court. I couldn't help but feel a cold and ugly thimg move around in my stomach. Something I couldn't name out loud. There was a deep and persistent wrongness that showed up every time he was near. It had always been that way, even before I understood why. How could I forget what he did to me?I didn't like him in a room. I didn't like him near people I cared about, and I especially didn't like the way he looked at things. He acted like everything in his line of sight was up for his taking.Every time Richard said something harsh to Eli, I felt it in my own chest. He did it so s

  • Best Friend’s Brother Shouldn’t Know How I Taste    29 - The evening

Eli's POVBefore I saw my father, I heard his voice. How could I ever miss it? I would pick that grating voice out of a crowd of a thousand people.I sprang up from my seat, ignoring Devon's curious questions, and made for the front door. I was already feeling a mixture of anger and dread. When I got there, my father had Kassidy's hand in his, and he was pressing a kiss against her fingers."Kassidy Townsend," he greeted in that oily voice of his. "It's been a while, dear."Kassidy looked like she wanted to throw up. I stepped forward. "Dad."He looked up at me, and the warmth he had directed at Kassidy cooled by about ten degrees. "Oh. Eli." He released her hand and straightened up, looking me over the way he always did, slowly, as though he was taking inventory and finding me lacking. "You look rough. The season just started, and you already look like this?""Good to see you too," I replied sarcastically. "I can see you have missed me."He smiled at that, but the smile was devoid o

  • Best Friend’s Brother Shouldn’t Know How I Taste    28 - August Dinner

Kassidy's POVI got home at seven fifteen that day, still in my Sal's uniform. The house was already full of voices when I pushed through the front door. The voices were coming from the kitchen, and something was cooking as well.Nova appeared from the kitchen doorway before I had even taken off my shoes. In my head, I was already bracing for some kind of verbal lash from her, but to my surprise, there was a wide smile on her face."Kassidy!" She opened her arms slightly, like she was receiving an august guest. "You made it! Come in, come in, we were just sitting down."Every single thing about what she was doing felt wrong. I couldn't have explained it to anyone who hadn't spent enough time around Nova to know the difference, but I knew. The warmth was like oil on the surface of water."Are you hungry?" She asked. "I was just about to serve the food.""Yeah, but I just need to run upstairs first," I replied. "I've been on shift all day, I want to shower and change quickly.""Of course

  • Best Friend’s Brother Shouldn’t Know How I Taste    27 - Every Single Time

Kassidy's POV When Monday rolled around, I walked into my Evidence and Proof class, the second of the day, sinking into one of the chairs by the walls.Simone, the girl from my Constitutional Law class dropped into the seat on my left with her bag hitting the floor loudly. Her afro was slightly flattened on one side like she had been lying down until very recently."Good morning, Kas!" She chirped. "Great day, isn't it? I didn't see you at Tort Law class.""That's because I had to dash into work quickly." I pursed my lips apologetically. "But I managed to do the reading.""Great!" She looked at my coffee. "Is that still warm?""Barely." I muttered."Tragic." She pulled out her notebook. "Did you do the reading?""Most of it." I replied. "I fell asleep on page forty.""Page forty?" She stared at me. "I made it to page twelve. Girl, you're a genius and then some."Bree appeared on my right, considerably more composed, her blonde curls falling in ringlets around her face and her laptop

  • Best Friend’s Brother Shouldn’t Know How I Taste    26 - Captain and Teammate

Kassidy's POV"Today drained me." I sighed as I pushed through the front door at half past five that same day. I had a plastic bag in one hand and my work bag on my shoulder. My feet and my lower back hurt, and I had spent the last forty minutes of my shift running between four tables because my coworker had called in sick. I had done it without complaining, mostly because I needed the extra cash, but I was paying for it now in every muscle below my waist. The plastic bag had everything I needed for a proper chicken and vegetable soup, a pack of chicken thighs, two carrots, a stick of celery, a can of chicken broth and a small bag of egg noodles. I had been thinking about this meal since Tuesday—I was sick of cereal and pizza, or crackers slathered with peanut butter at eleven at night. I needed a real meal that would last me two days if I portioned it right, while also cost me less than fifteen dollars.I was already planning the cooking in my head as I walked down the hallway toward

  • Best Friend’s Brother Shouldn’t Know How I Taste    25 - Opposite Footsteps

Kassidy's POVThe morning after the party, I woke up to the sound of breathing that wasn't mine. Thank God I wasn't too drunk from the party, because my brain immediately registered danger. Who the hell was in the room with me?Swiftly, I turned over and looked down at the floor beside my bed, and there was Eli Deering. He was shirtless and flat on his back on my hardwood floor with the spare blanket pulled up to his chin, mouth slightly open, completely and deeply asleep.I sat up slowly, my mouth agape at the fact that this grown man had chosen my floor over every other available option in this house. Then I got out of bed, stood over him, and shook his shoulder. He stirred, frowned, and then his eyes opened. He looked at the ceiling first, then at the window, and finally up at me standing over him in my pyjamas with my arms folded."Morning, Townsend." He greeted me, as if waking up in my room was perfectly normal."What are you doing in my room, Eli?"He pushed himself up onto hi
