01 - Bastard next door

Kassidy's POV"Are you inside yet?"I looked up at the house from where I was standing on the front door, and took a deep breath. My duffel bag slumped against my leg, and my fingers were so cold I could barely feel them."Not yet," I told Piper as I clenched my fist against the phone pressed to my ear. I tilted my head back and looked at the house properly. It was a nice house — wide and warm-toned. Exactly the kind of place I could never afford on my own, which was the entire reason I was standing on its front door in the first place. My dad had made his position very clear the morning I showed him my college admission letter. He'd pushed it back across the kitchen table without looking at me, which was somehow worse than if he'd argued. So here I was in Minnesota. Five hundred miles from home, two hundred dollars to my name, about to walk through the door of a man who, if given the choice, would probably have let me freeze out here all night.I lifted my head and caught a moveme

02 - Party Downstairs

Kassidy's POVEli Deering could go straight to hell. That was what I told myself, anyway, as I pulled my black dress over my hips and stepped back to look at myself in the mirror. I needed to believe it.The alternative was sitting alone in that room, stewing in the particular kind of smallness that Eli Deering had always been very good at making me feel. I threw a white sweatshirt over the dress, spritzed some perfume on my neck, and walked out of my room into his party, without a single shred of guilt. Why did that fuckface get to determine what I should or shouldn't do? He wasn't my father, he wasn't my keeper, and he certainly wasn't anyone I had to answer to. I had moved five hundred miles from Wisconsin and unpacked my entire life into a neutral-walled bedroom. I had earned a party. The noise was so loud before I even reached the bottom of the stairs. Music was thumping through the walls, and there were people everywhere, older students filling every corner of the house with red

03 - After Party Effect

Kassidy's POVWhen I woke up the next morning, the first thing I did was grin at the ceiling like an idiot. For about thirty seconds, I felt so warm, boneless, and stupidly happy, replaying the previous night in a loop that my brain seemed very committed to.Eli Deering had kissed me. Eli Deering had stayed in my room. Eli FUCKING Deering, who had spent the better part of four years looking at me with nothing but disgust, had...I sat up. Oh, my God!Swiftly, I turned around and realised that the other side of the bed was empty. He had been gone long enough for the sheets to lose his warmth entirely. Which meant that he had made a deliberate, early exit, and that particular detail punctured my giddiness just a little. Then I looked down at the sheets, and my face went completely hot."Oh no." I whispered. There was a large, wet spot, unmistakably mine, right in the middle of the mattress. I stared at it for a full three seconds before the embarrassment came upon me. I covered my face

04 - Pretty Regrets

Kassidy's POVI left the house that morning without even eating my cereal. I needed air and distance and to be somewhere that wasn't that house. Quietly, I grabbed my bag, pushed my feet into my sneakers, and walked out the front door before anyone could say anything else to me.Other college freshmen were already outside, waiting for the bus, which I appreciated. The crowd around kept me from doing something embarrassing, like crying on a public street on my first full day as a college student.Terrible mistake, that was what he had called it. Not just last night, but me, by extension. My presence in his house and my presence in his life was a terrible mistake he had to live next door to.I was so furious that my hands were shaking a little as I pushed through the campus gates thirty minutes later. But the anger was nothing compared to the heartbreak I felt.Classes did not help.I had three of them back to back: Introduction to Legal Studies, English Composition, and a general Poli

05 - That Was The Problem

Kassidy's POVThe rain started at four forty-seven in the evening. I had no umbrella, and I had no rain jacket. All I brought was a tote bag with a notebook in it that I absolutely could not afford to replace. The bus stop was a seven-minute walk from the campus gates. I was already having the worst day of my life, and I didn't want to add to that by walking in the rain. So I sat by the window and watched the rain come down in sheets.I used the waiting time productively, or tried to. I applied for three jobs; one on campus and two off campus, in the hope that I'll get a positive response from them. My phone rang. I fished it out of my pocket, feeling both dread and relief upon seeing Piper's name. Has her brother told her anything? "Hey." I tried to sound normal as I picked up the call."You don't sound okay," Piper said immediately."I'm fine.""Kas, did something happen?""Piper, I'm fine, it's just been a long day." I sighed. "I just want to get home and take a long bath.""How

06 - The Girlfriend

Kassidy's POVI still couldn't wrap my head around the fact that Eli's girlfriend was moving in. He had such audacity! Had he forgotten that he'd had sex with me just last night? How was I supposed to deal with this crushing guilt?!I sat on my bare mattress and turned that sentence over in my head a few times, trying to make it feel less insane than it was.And now, I was going to be housemates with his girlfriend.I pressed both hands flat against my face.I had been so caught up in the heat of the argument last night, so desperate to stop feeling small, that I hadn't stopped to think about any of it. Not the girl in the kitchen, nor Nova, or the fact that Eli Deering was clearly the kind of man I should stay away from.I was such an idiot.A soft knock at my door made me yank my hands off my face."Kassidy?" It was Nova. "I just wanted to check that you have everything you need in here. Eli mentioned that the room was a little bare when you moved in."I opened the door. She was stan

07 - Like She's The Only Person In The Room

Kassidy's POVEli was standing in the middle of the room with his arms crossed, like he'd been pacing before he heard the bathroom door. His arms were crossed, and his jaw clenched. I rolled my eyes as soon as I got over the shock. I snapped. "What the hell are you doing in my room?"He didn't say anything immediately, but his eyes dropped to my feet before he stared back at my face."Relax."What the hell? The word got on my nerves. He shouldn't be here. He shouldn't be seen here. How could I relax when he was right there? "I asked you a question," I said. "You should not be here. This is the only place I can be where you're not."He grunted, staring at me closely. "We need to talk.""So you thought breaking into my room was the appropriate way to initiate that conversation?""The door was unlocked, so I just walked in." He said it as though it made everything better. How was he so relaxed about this?I pulled my towel tighter around myself and suddenly had a very vivid mental ima

08 - One Less Thing To Worry About

Kassidy's POVFive days since Nova arrived, and I had gotten very good at disappearing. I timed my mornings around Eli's schedule, which I had figured out by the third day. He was out of the kitchen by seven fifteen, so I came down at seven thirty. If I heard Nova's voice anywhere on the ground floor, I went back upstairs and waited. It was exhausting and slightly pathetic, but it was working for me.I had been eating once a day, buying the cheapest takeout I could find every other day, and quietly taking whatever nobody would notice was gone from the kitchen. A handful of crackers. A banana nobody was going to eat. I told myself it was temporary. Just until the part-time job came through.Unfortunately, I’d also run out of tampons. I sat on the edge of my mattress and stared at my empty bag for a long moment. Then, with the taste of shame in my mouth, I got up, walked down the hallway, and stood in front of the door that Eli shared with Nova. I knocked and stood there, praying with e

09 - Thin Walls

Kassidy's POVLast night was wild, or should I say crazy and unbelievable. I had been in bed for maybe an hour, drifting toward sleep, when I heard a thud followed by a loud moan from the room next door, and then another quickly after the first. I could recognize that voice even in my worst nightmare. It was Nova. Her voice was low at first, something I could bear, but then, out of nowhere, it became louder. "Faster, Eli," Nova moaned loudly. "Yes, baby,"I lay there and stared at the ceiling. When I couldn't take it anymore, I tried putting a pillow over my head to block out the sound, but it did nothing. I never realized how thin the walls in this house were until tonight. Why couldn't they quiet down? I had an interview at the pizza place in the morning, and I needed all the sleep I could get.I tried my earphones. I found a playlist and turned the volume up until my ears ached. But I could still hear it underneath the music, or maybe I was just imagining it by that point, but e

10 - Is Trouble

Kassidy's POVI pushed through the door of Sal's Pizza, feeling much better for the first time in days, and the first thing I saw was Luca Reynolds sitting in a black car directly across the street. He spotted me at the same time and raised a hand in a wave. As if this was completely normal.I crossed the street and stopped at his window. "What are you doing here?""Waiting for you." He replied simply."How did you know my interview was this morning?""You mentioned it, remember?" He replied."I mentioned I had an interview, but I didn't tell you where or when."He grinned. "Let's just say I know people at Sal's."I stared at him incredulously. I wasn't sure what bothered me more, the fact that he had shown up or the fact that he looked so unbothered about showing up. I had deliberately not told him the details for exactly this reason. I didn't need some guy tailing me around campus like a lost puppy."And how did it go?" he asked.I weighed my options, decided that withholding the in
