Chapter 1

Author: Anonymous
My family had just gone bankrupt when Asher wasted no time in bringing his first love home. He slid a divorce agreement in front of me.

"I'm going to make Cora my official wife five days from now. I've let her down for too many years, so I can't disappoint her anymore. If you behave, I'll let you stay in this house and live alongside her."

My family had just gone bankrupt, and he was already this impatient. He couldn't even wait one more day.

I looked at him calmly. His gaze was cold, and the way he looked at me was as if I were a stranger.

Even after five years of marriage, I was still unable to win him over in the slightest.

Feeling flustered, I lowered my head and forced my hand to stop trembling as I grabbed a pen to sign the agreement.

"Alright…"

I wouldn't be staying here for much longer anyway. So, whoever Asher wanted to be with in the future no longer had anything to do with me.

His eyebrows arched, seemingly surprised to find how decisive I was. He picked up the agreement and glanced at it to ensure that I hadn't made a mistake before standing up.

"Good. I'll take you to the courthouse to finalize this when I'm free."

With that, he walked off without a backward glance, which was expected—he had never been one to waste words on me.

When Asher was no longer in view, I took my phone out to book a southbound flight for five days later. Once the divorce was finalized, we'd be officially over, and we'd go our separate ways.

Five years ago, I had attended Dad's company's annual gala. That was when I fell in love at first sight with Asher Ziegler—the man Dad had personally guided.

The very next day, Asher got my number from Dad. Not even half a year later, we were married, as if that were the most natural thing in the world.

I had believed that fate had brought us together.

That was, until Cora Singer posted her own wedding photo online.

That day, Asher got completely wasted from drinking.

Worried that he would feel unwell, I ended the toasts early and brought him back to our marital home. However, I had just barely dragged him to the bed when he suddenly shoved me away, and I crashed hard into the table behind me.

The vase on it toppled over and shattered beside me. My heart leaped into my throat, and I didn't dare move.

The usually gentle Asher glared at me with bloodshot eyes as he roared, "I hate you, Maddison Gruber! If you hadn't fallen for me… If your father hadn't given me a way out of hell, leaving me no choice but to listen to him… How else would I have been forced into marrying you while watching Cora marry someone else instead?"

His glare was so cold that it was as if he were staring at an enemy.

So, the sweet romance that I thought we shared had been a lie. I drew in a deep breath, but no matter what I did, I couldn't seem to exhale it out.

After staring at each other for a long time, I eventually burst into tears under his gaze.

Asher let out a cold scoff and staggered a little as he got to his feet. He then threw the towel I had just used to wipe his face at me.

"Do you think I care? I'm going to divorce you and find Cora instead."

His eyes were glassy, and his cheeks were flushed. He was clearly very drunk. Otherwise, he wouldn't have said those words.

With a trembling voice, I choked out, "You're drunk. We'll talk when you're sober."

He ignored me and stumbled out of the room.

Deflated, I plopped down onto the floor and cried my heart out. When I grew tired of crying, I climbed into bed and fell asleep.

The next morning, the moment I opened the door, our eyes met. We both looked away simultaneously.

Asher never mentioned divorce again, and I, too, pretended that he hadn't said anything.

I shoved my sense of unease down and told myself that everything would be okay. Cora was married now, and one day, I'd win him over.

A few days later, Cora came to my house to see me. This time, she looked a little uneasy, and the resentment in her eyes had disappeared, leaving behind only emptiness. She said that she only knew Asher and me in Jigsville. Now that Asher refused to speak to her, she could only brazenly come to me instead.I figured that she wanted to vent. She told me that for the past year, Asher had constantly ignored her. Now, she finally understood the suffering I had gone through, as she had been facing the long nights alone as well.As she spoke, she broke down into heavy sobs. "I hate him. He was the one who insisted on bringing me here to Jigsville. He was adamant that he'd divorce you and marry me. He said that he would give me a good life."Now he just says he doesn't love me anymore and leaves me all alone. He's already abandoned me twice. But I don't have anyone else to depend on but him.""Then try treating him as a tool to help you live a better life," I said to Cora. Cora blin

I could feign ignorance the first time Asher asked me for a divorce because I had loved him then. But the second time, I was truly heartbroken, and that was when I made up my mind to divorce him. "Aren't things better now? Both times, you said you wanted to divorce me because you wanted to marry Cora, and I've already agreed to it. So, why are you coming back to me now?" I asked.Asher's eyes were a little red, and he opened his mouth, unsure of how to start. "I came to get back together with you. I didn't marry Cora. We didn't even go through with the wedding. That home is still waiting for you to go back to."I shook my head and said, "This is my home now. I don't have any others. If there's nothing else, please leave."Asher started crying, refusing to leave. I didn't want to pay any more attention to him, so I turned and returned to my own room.Later, I heard from Mom that when they came home, Asher was still sitting in the living room. Even after they forced him out, he

Cora sped home as well, thinking that something had happened to Asher. When she saw the panic on his face, she couldn't help but ask, "What's wrong?"Looking solemn, he ignored her, turned to grab his keys, and dashed outside. Cora stumbled after him, crying out, "Asher, don't leave me behind again…"But Asher simply floored the gas pedal, and the car sped down the road so fast that the scenery on both sides was a blur. When he reached the airport, he rushed to find me using the flight information his assistant had just looked up, but the plane had already taken off. He was still a step too late. His heart pounded loudly in his chest, and it felt like he was completely drained of energy as he staggered forward a few steps. After a beat, he suddenly covered his face with both hands and started weeping, his tears flowing uncontrollably. Everyone stared at him in shock. He wanted to just leave everything behind and catch a flight after me, but there were too many things her

An hour later, I reunited with my parents at the airport. They already knew that Asher and I had divorced, and so they sighed when they saw me, their eyes red-rimmed."If I had known this, I wouldn't have let you marry him in the first place," Dad said.I had no right to complain, since I was the one who rejected all the wealthy heirs in Jigsville and chose Asher, who had nothing. The flight south was long. After we landed, we took a taxi to the hotel where we would be staying temporarily. I had assumed that I wouldn't be able to stand it here, but to my surprise, I started to fall in love with the place by the second day. I kept my parents company as we explored the city for a few days, and I used the money from the jewelry I sold to buy an apartment. It was situated in the city center and featured a large balcony with a stunning view. Mom and I planted some of our favorite flowers on the balcony. After setting aside enough money for food and other expenses, I gave the rest to

Asher's expression was stormy the whole ride to the courthouse. There weren't many people there that day, and we were issued the divorce certificates in less than 30 minutes.Once he got hold of his copy, he immediately took off, not even offering me a ride back. Given that he was about to marry the love of his life the next day, his actions made sense. From the chefs to the maids, everyone in the house was busy. They would usually greet me when they saw me, but that day, they only gave me a polite nod before scurrying off. I returned to my room and finished packing the last of my things. There wasn't much stuff left. I had already sold off everything that could be turned into cash, and the bits and pieces left only took up two suitcases. While no one paid any attention to me, I quickly wheeled the suitcases outside. When I departed the next day, I only needed to carry a backpack. There was still some time left, so I sent my parents a message telling them that I would also be

With nothing else to do, I sold a few more of Dad's wedding gifts for cash. Asher hadn't paid any attention to me for the entire day, but he stepped into my room once again."Your father doesn't need to go to prison, but he'll need to pay a huge fine, and he's been kicked out of the company. He can't stay in Jigsville any longer. He plans on heading south. Your mother is going with him. "But look at you. You're still able to enjoy the good life alongside me right now," he said while standing before me, his expression unreadable. I nodded. With Dad's money, I could've had my pick of men in Jigsville before. Even if I hadn't married him, I would've still been living the good life right now. When I didn't respond to him, he pulled out a ring and slammed it onto the table in front of me. "You lied to me. You sold it," he said through gritted teeth, seemingly furious.Nonchalantly, I responded, "It's mine. I wanted to sell it, so I did. It's of no concern to you."Asher's brows
