Luna pointed her cheeks. "You are blushing, Eve", she teased.
The bell rang, cutting off the remaining chatter. "Okay, Zoey..., Luna, see you tomorrow," Evangeline said while grabbing her bag.
"Okay.... Don't forget to tell us tomorrow, 'What was that something?' " Zoey said with a wink.
Evangeline rolled her eyes again but couldn't help a smile. She texted Aaron: I'm leaving. If you have time, come to the hallway.
Aaron replied almost immediately: Okay.
She put her phone into her bag and glanced around the room. Nate was gone. She grabbed her bag from a desk and left the classroom. Zoey and Luna trailed behind her.
"Finally, my friend Eve got some butterflies in her stomach," Zoey teased as they reached the hallway.
Luna chimed in, "About time! I was starting to think she was immune to handsome guys."
Evangeline just shook her head hearing music, a smirk playing on her lips, and she glanced walking towards the hallway, students rushing towards their homes, their voices silent in music.
The sunlight warmly reflected Nate's face. he stood on the seventh-floor balcony, a slight breeze rustling his hair. From the height, He could see the entire campus below, the red-brick buildings, the pond at the center, and the distant sounds of students laughing and shouting. But his attention was focused on Evangeline.
She appear from the college building, her head held high. She carries a confident walk, her heels clicking against the walkway.
Two men in dark suits stood beside a black sedan, their eyes scanning the crowd with an almost predatory. Evangeline approached them, a small, genuine smile playing on her lips. She spoke briefly to one of the men, then turned to Aaron, who was coming to her, his sports uniform a splash of color against the sunlight.
So, that's Aaron..., Nate thought, his gaze fixed on him. He looked… comfortable around her. Too comfortable. Evangeline smiled at Aaron, a genuine smile. Is he just a friend? Or something more? He glanced at the bodyguards.
"You have a practice today?" Eve asked while glancing at him from top to bottom.
"Yup," he smiled warmly, his eyes crumpling at the corners.
"Okay, call me tonight," Evangeline said to Aaron, her voice calm.
"Of course, Evangeline. I'll be waiting," Aaron replied, his enthusiasm evident. He waved his hands before heading off in the opposite direction.
Nate's phone buzzed continuously in his pocket. He pulled it out.
"How was your day, Nate? Anything interesting?" his assistant asked with curiosity on the phone.
Nate's gaze flicked back down to Evangeline before he answered. "It was good. By the way, why didn't you tell me Kim was coming here?" He questioned, clearly upset.
"Your dad appointed him, Nate."
"He's here for your safety and to handle business matters. If the Winter family finds out about you, Kim is the backup. He knows everything," the assistant encouraged.
"Wait... What? Do you think I'm going to mess up Dad's plan?" his eyes narrowed.
"I mean..." His assistant opened his mouth, but Nate interrupted, "That's not happening!" His tone shifted to one of fury.
"Relax, Nate. Kim's on your side. He's here to help, not interfere. Trust me, he's a great asset. Don't confuse your mind." he reassured him gently with his words
"Fine. But this makes me disappointed," Nate replied, his irritation with his father's decision evident.
"Don't worry, Kim's got your back," he iterated. "Treat him like a friend; you need a good friend sometimes."
At that moment, Kim interrupted their conversation and signaled Nate to leave. Nate nodded to him to wait and, before ending the call, said, "Fine. Whatever Dad says it has some meaning."
"That's my boy," he encouraged him.
"Okay, Nick, I have to go," he ended the call, and both left the college building.
The car door automatically closed with a soft sound as Evangeline settled into the plush leather seat. The familiar scent of lavender car spray freshener enveloped her as her bodyguards took their positions.
"How was your day, ma'am? Did everything go smoothly?" Michael asked, his usual formality replaced with a more relaxed tone.
"Did anyone cause trouble, ma'am?" Christopher, one of her bodyguards, asked.
Evangeline rolled her eyes, and her head fell back against the seat. "Uh... Are you serious?"
"Um.... Do I look like I'm in my forties or fifties? No, right?"
"Please stop with the formal tone. It's exhausting every time. Just call me Eve or Evangeline."
Christopher straightened slightly. "Apologies, ma'am...sorry, Evangeline," he corrected himself quickly. "We were assigned two weeks ago. If you'd prefer, we can adjust our tone moving forward."
A small smile twitched on her lips. "Thank you, Chris. I appreciate it. You two seem to catch on quickly. The last team didn't..." Her voice carried a hint of something darker, leaving the unspoken story hanging in the air, "One day, I will share about them."
Christopher and Michael exchanged puzzled glances; their confusion was evident. "What had the previous bodyguards done wrong?"
The rest of the ride continued in contemplative silence, and Evangeline in the back seat watched the city blur past her window, her mind elsewhere.
After arriving home, "We reached home," Micheal said, standing outside the car. Evangeline came out of the car and walked, humming a cheerful song tune, pausing at the front door when she noticed it was ajar. Her brows furrowed, the quiet evening suddenly felt heavy with unease.
She paused and turned to them, her eyes wide. "Guys, the doors are already open."
A week later.Nate's wearing a seatbelt, and his grip tightened on the steering wheel with a car engine roar, eyes on the rearview. " Do you think she's doing well?" he asked.Victoria, perched in the passenger seat, adjusted her makeup and glanced at her mirror. "Um! I think so," she said. I don't like her friends. They are emitting bad vibes. Remember how awful Zoey was?"Nate nodded, his focus on the road, " Yeah... I've seen that Eve's friends, all smiles and jokes, seemed normal enough at first. But on that trip, they completely ignored her." He said, his voice low and thoughtful. "But something is bothering me. Aaron's sudden change in behavior raises doubts. His eyes are always telling something." He stopped his car at the traffic signal. "Have you noticed Aaron's reaction? When he saw that image,"Victoria narrowed her eyes and nodded in agreement. "Yeah, he didn't get shocked after seeing his best friend's photo." Nate, chewing the gum, "Yeah... it seems he knows something a
Evangeline's breath hitched, her eyes were red, and under the waterline, purple veins that were slightly popping out with tears, her neck veins were visible, due to suffocation. The tension increased in the room, and then the door burst open.Chris and Michael stood near the doorway; their faces etched with concern as they took in Evangeline's distress. Both rushed towards her. "Eve! What... where is the inhaler?" Chris asked, grabbing her hands.Nate became a whirlwind of motion, tossing dresses aside in his frantic search. Finally, his eyes landed on the White tube. "Found it...." he shouted, his voice filled with relief as he grabbed and rushed towards Evangeline. She held the inhaler with her trembling hands, intake slowly. Within a few minutes, her torn breaths softened like regular breath.A collective sigh of relief filled the room as the tension began to fade. "Thank God," Chris exhaled, his shoulders relaxing against the wall.Victoria pulled Evangeline into a tight hug, tea
Evangeline walked onto the balcony and stretched her body. "What were you guys talking about?" she asked, settling into a chair. After her presence, tension hung in the air between Victoria and Nate.Victoria, with a forced, casual smile, a little too quickly, offered, "Uh! Nothing much. Just debating whether this downpour means we should ditch our hiking plans.""Hmm. I think it's good, I am already tired of watching fake people around me," Evangeline agreed, twisting her messy long hair into a quick bun. Her gaze then softened as she noticed Nate's withdrawn demeanor. "Nate, you seem a little off. Everything alright?" she asked with genuine concern.Nate offered a tight nod. "Yeah... just... yeah."Evangeline's attention shifted to her phone and, scrolling through the IG posts, suddenly stopped, her eyebrows arched in disbelief. "What the hell?" she murmured, thrusting the screen towards Victoria and Nate. "It's a picture... of me and Nate?""Hmm, I just posted. " Victoria interrupt
"Who might be?" Aaron thought. He walked to the washroom absently, splashed cold tap water on his face, watching his disappointment and regret reflected in the mirror. "I hope everything is solved soon," he said, wiping his wet face with a towel and opening the door.Aaron's eyes widened in shock. "Uh! Lee," he whispered, before another word came out of his mouth. Liam punched him in the face hard and slapped him.Aaron didn't react or defend himself. He stood silently watching the floor in guilt. Liam, his hand still raised back for another punch, watched Aaron's broken expression and the blood trickling from the corner of his lip. He signed, and slowly he lowered his hand down. "Just hit me harder, Lee.... I deserve this...." Aaron grabbed Liam's hand and slapped it against his cheek. "Please hit me...." he begged, his words slurring, broken into crying.Liam's eyes furrowed in confusion; his rage reduced to concern. "Hey, Aaron, what happened?" he asked, gently lifting Aaron's chi
In the evening, the sunset bled across the endless beach in golden color, the cold breeze whispered with wave sounds making the party perfect. Down the shore, the staff were preparing barbeque and fruit salads, the scent of grilled seafood mingling with cold air, and another side, different types of drinks were being poured into glasses.Chris was relaxed wearing casual pants and a white shirt, holding a streamed cup, watching the sunset. "Eve, are you okay?" he asked, watching Evangeline's swollen face. He is sipping his coffee slowly. "Sorry, we both bailed on you so suddenly last night."Evangeline offered him a strained smile on her face, "It's completely fine, Chris. You too human right?" The laughter sound echoed behind them, interrupting their conversation. Both of them turned, glancing at who it was. Her eyes were red, flickering with disappointment as she saw Aaron and Zoey chasing each other playfully near the water's edge. She quickly averted her gaze, focusing on the beach.
Aaron hesitated, then blurted out, "Um! Can I propose to you tomorrow... at the beach?""Huh!" Zoey's surprised by his words, her eyebrows shooting up."Yes, " Aaron continued, "I've been thinking. If I propose to you, maybe... maybe Eve will finally open up about her feelings. right?" He said as he watched Zoey's excitement on her face.He is a pure idiot. Anyway, it's beneficial to me, Zoey wondered as she nodded her head." Okay... that might actually be the best idea. Don't worry, Aaron," she murmured, and hugged him gently at the back of his shoulder, the victory smirk replaced on her lips.At the same time, Liam entered Aaron's bedroom, his eyes widening at the unexpected scene. "What the hell?" he murmured, looking at Aaron and Zoey in disbelief expression on his face The tension in the room peaked. "I think I have to go, it's already 3 am." Zoey offered a casual wave at them, "Bye, Liam, Bye, Aaron."The moment the door clicked shut behind her, Liam grabbed Aaron's shirt, his
