Chapter 4

작가: Gummy
Arthur brought me breakfast, but my throat could barely manage to swallow.

"Arthur, come with me to get an urn. I don't have many days left. When it happens, take my ashes home for me."

"Naomi..." He held my gaze for a long moment, then nodded anyway.

At the supply depot, Carl and Susan were both there. She pointed at me, wide-eyed.

"Naomi, are you and Arthur out here on a date?"

Carl glared at me and yanked me toward him hard enough to bruise my arm. Susan reached over and turned the urn over in her hands.

"Is this a gift from Arthur? The pattern's so distinctive—he really put thought into it."

The base was too far from any city for real deliveries; only the occasional traveling vendor passed through, and none of them sold urns. I'd bought the nicest box I could find as a stand-in.

Carl stared at me, waiting for an explanation.

"Everyone deserves to go home in the end. When I die, I want this to carry my ashes back."

His brow furrowed. "Stop using death to threaten me."

I didn't bother explaining anymore. "I don't expect you to believe me."

I turned to Arthur instead. "Let's head back."

Susan covered her mouth, stifling a laugh. "Naomi, your imagination is really something. That box is way too delicate to hold ashes—it's basically a makeup case." Her voice dropped, sly. "I get that you're jealous the captain looks out for me, but you shouldn't keep piling pressure on him like this in front of everyone. What are people supposed to think of him?"

Carl snatched the box from my hands and smashed it to the ground. "Enough, Naomi! How long are you going to keep this up? Susan's frail as she is, and she's never once made a scene like this. You're built like an ox—can't you stop embarrassing me?"

I picked the box back up, brushed off the dust, and looked him dead in the eye. "I'm embarrassing you? The entire base knows I can barely stand anymore. Are you really that oblivious, or are you just choosing not to see it? Why don't you go ask the team doctor yourself?"

He went quiet for a second before finally reaching for his phone. Susan tugged at his sleeve.

"Captain, the doctor is Naomi's close friend. Can we really trust whatever she says?"

He hesitated, then put the phone away and walked past me, his shoulder slamming into mine hard enough to stagger me. He didn't seem to notice—his face was pure disgust.

"Naomi, you'll stop at nothing to win this placement over Susan. If I didn't already know your body could handle this, you'd have almost had me fooled. Go home and think about what you've done. You're not to leave your room until Susan's flight home."

Arthur tried to speak up for me. I just squeezed his arm and answered flatly, "Fine."

A week passed. My complications only got worse. I couldn't walk without a wheelchair anymore, and even squinting, I could barely make out shapes through the blur.

I called Carl.

"Carl, sign the divorce papers. I don't want to be buried next to you when I die."

"How long are you going to keep up this act? I'm sick of it too, you know. Do you really think a strong, healthy woman like you can compete for sympathy against someone as delicate as Susan?"

He let out a long breath. "I'll make sure you get the next rotation home, all right? Are you satisfied now? Just stop making scenes."

The phone slipped from my hand.

Arthur couldn't take it anymore. Without a word, he hoisted me onto his back. "We're done counting on Carl. Let's find the liaison. He'll get you home."

I nodded, half-conscious.

We finally made it to the liaison's door, only to hear Carl's voice again from inside.

"Derek, don't believe a word Naomi tells you if she comes to see you. I know exactly what shape she's in—there's nothing actually wrong with her. I don't understand why she keeps trying to compete with Susan like this. Does she have no compassion at all?"

My heart stopped. My chest clenched like a fist had closed around it.

"Arthur," I whispered, "take my ashes home. That's my last wish."

I went limp and slid off his back, my eyes falling shut. Something must have made Carl turn around—his pupils shrank, and he came running, stumbling over his own feet.

As the helicopter climbed into the sky, something in Carl hollowed out completely."Naomi, come back!" he screamed, his face twisted. "You can't leave with him! You're my wife—if you need treatment, I'm the one who should be taking you! Why would you rather turn to a stranger than stay by my side?"The question was never going to get an answer. He stood there, watching the helicopter shrink into the distance, as if Naomi had vanished from his life entirely. In ten years together, this was the first time she'd ever actually left him.Carl couldn't wrap his head around it. While he stood there frozen, Susan couldn't help pushing at him."Captain, hurry up and put in my request to go home. I've only got two weeks after this infection. I don't want to die. Please, save me."Carl's eyes drifted to her face, slowly coming into focus. "I remember now. This is all because of you."Susan blinked. "What do you mean, because of me?""Captain, just call Derek already!"Instead, Carl explod

Susan's expression shifted from fury to sheer panic."Then what do I do? What happens to someone who's infected?"Carl gulped. "If it's left untreated, you'd be dead within two weeks."Panicked, Susan grabbed Carl's arm without a thought for who was watching. "Captain, I want to go home. Can you get me on another flight? Ask Derek to come pick me up right away. I don't want to die! Please, save me!"Carl didn't even spare her a glance, his eyes catching on me instead. His jaw dropped. "Naomi! What happened to you? How did you age this much in three days? Your hair's gone white!"I looked at him, almost amused. "I guess the complications must have sped things up."He froze, then reached out and grabbed a few strands of my hair. "The complications did this? Why didn't you tell me?"I laughed, louder this time. "Was it that I didn't tell you, or that you just didn't believe me?"He choked on the words, his voice shaking. "You could've told me more than once! If you'd said it again

My body felt like it had been filled with lead, too heavy to move."Don't worry," I said. "I'll think about what's best for the base."Carl nodded, satisfied. "Good." His gaze drifted to Susan, and only then did it seem to occur to him to ask, "Why are you back?"She stiffened for a beat before wrapping herself around his arm, pouting. "Can't a girl miss you halfway through a flight?"Carl glanced at me and pulled his arm away, embarrassed. "Not now. Let's be serious."Before Susan could spin another excuse, I cut in with a cold smile. "Leaving your post without authorization means ten days on mining duty underground. That's the rule. You're not planning on playing favorites again, are you? Even if I let it slide, do you think anyone else would? Do you think the Institute would?"Susan's face fell. "Why should I have to go dig in a mine? What's wrong with just not wanting to leave?"At the mention of the Institute, Carl's fingers curled. He raised his voice to stop her. "Susan,

Arthur and I exchanged a glance, and I shook my head at Carl. "Nothing important."His face darkened anyway. "Naomi, are you still upset with me over giving Susan the rotation instead of you? I already explained this—we're a team, and I have to prioritize whoever's weaker. Just hold on a little longer. I'll make sure you go next time, all right?"I stared him down. "I don't have a next time to wait for.""Still with this act," he snapped, impatient.I choked back my frustration and changed course instead. "Forget it. I won't make this difficult for you. Do whatever you want.""Really?" He studied me for a long moment, and once he was satisfied I wasn't being sarcastic, his shoulders relaxed and the smile came back. "Good, I'm glad you're not upset with me. Eat up. We'll head back to base once you're done."I'd meant to refuse, but the words changed direction on their way out, and I took the porridge from him and drank it down instead. The healthier I stayed, the better the odds f

I searched everywhere for my phone before finally grabbing it off the nightstand and scrolling through my contacts. It took a while to dig up a number I hadn't dialed in ten years, but I finally found it and called, my hands shaking with emotion."Gabe, does the offer you made me ten years ago still stand? To join your research team?" I asked the moment he picked up. "I need to get home. Can you help me?"There was a long silence on the other end, like he hadn't expected the call at all. I couldn't wait him out. "Well? Say something!"Gabe Malone led a rival research team. He was talented in his own right and came from a wealthy, well-connected family, which was exactly why he'd been assigned to stay stationed back home instead of out in the field. He'd tried to recruit me more than once, even offering a generous salary despite knowing I was Carl's wife. But back then, I'd been foolish, blinded by love, and I'd turned him down flat to follow Carl out to the Arctic instead.Ten ye

"Naomi! Naomi, what's wrong?""Wake up! Don't scare me like this!"Voices clamored around me from every direction. Irritated, I snapped, "Shut up, stop talking!" and jolted awake at the sound of my own voice.Carl, who'd been glaring daggers at me not long ago, leaned in with obvious relief. "Naomi, you're awake. You scared the hell out of me. I really thought something had happened to you."Disoriented, I glanced around the room. Arthur explained, his eyes rimmed red, "This is the hospital closest to the base. You collapsed and scared everyone, so we brought you here."I tried to speak, and my throat felt like it had been sliced with a blade. "Where's the plane?"The relief drained from Arthur's face. He held his breath and shot Carl a furious look. "It already left. With Susan on it."A wave of disappointment washed over me, tangled up with something that felt almost like resignation, like I'd known it would go this way all along. "Oh," I said flatly, and let my head drop. "
