Chapter 3

ผู้เขียน: Gummy
Back underground, my partner, Arthur Lowe, hurried over the moment he saw me, worry written across his face.

"Naomi, what are you doing down here? Isn't Susan on shift today? Your body can't take this. You need to rest." He grabbed my arm, already pulling me toward the exit. "Come on, I'll take you back up."

I laughed, hollow. "Captain's orders. Susan wanted to go watch the northern lights, so I'm covering her night shift."

Arthur's face darkened. "Is she here to work or here on vacation? And you're in this state and he still—is he blind, or does he only have eyes for Susan?"

I caught his arm and shook my head. "Forget it. He's completely convinced Susan's too delicate and made himself her personal knight. He's not going to listen to you."

Arthur slammed his fist into the wall. "What about your rotation home? Has he set a date yet?"

My throat tightened. "That went to Susan too."

His jaw dropped. I'd already pushed myself past my limit, and everything went black.

When I came to, only my teammates were around me. I lowered my eyes to hide my disappointment. "Where is he?"

One of them rolled their eyes, annoyed on my behalf. "Worry about yourself for once. Forget that heartless man." He pulled up a recording and played it. Carl's voice, ice-cold, came through the speaker.

"The wind's too strong up top. Susan can't handle it, so I need to stay with her. Tell Naomi to stop being so difficult—she's fine."

My hands fisted around the sheets until my knuckles went white. "Arthur. Bring me a pen and paper."

That was when Carl walked in with Susan trailing behind him.

"See, she's completely fine," he said. "Just like Susan said."

Arthur rounded on him, furious. "Do you not see how swollen her limbs are? Do you not see how pale she's gone?"

Susan's eyes flicked back and forth, and she cut in before Arthur could say more. "Naomi's probably just on her period. Some swelling is totally normal then. Don't worry, I'll go make you some ginger tea in a bit." Then she added, with a knowing little smile, "Arthur is a man, after all—he wouldn't really understand a woman's body. Something this personal really isn't his place to help with."

Carl's eyes went cold, like the suggestion had planted a seed of doubt. "Naomi!"

I looked at him without a flicker of emotion, took the pen and paper from Arthur's hand, and wrote out a divorce agreement without hesitation.

The moment Carl saw those words, his expression twisted. He snatched the paper and tore it to shreds.

"Susan was right. You—"

I cut him off. "Susan says, Susan says. There's no room in your head for anyone but Susan. So tell me, aren't I doing you a favor by setting you free?"

His face went dark. Susan burst into sudden tears.

"Naomi, I only ever thought of the captain as an older brother! Are you accusing me of coming between you two?"

She fled the room in tears, and Carl's expression shifted before he chased after her.

"Naomi, I'll deal with you when I get back," he said, then shot Arthur a sharp look. "I'm not agreeing to a divorce."

Once they were both gone, I broke into a coughing fit so violent it felt like my chest was tearing apart. Arthur looked at me, full of sympathy. "Naomi."

I shook my spinning head and forced a reassuring smile. "I'm fine. Just tired. I want to rest." I lay down and closed my eyes.

After Arthur left, I opened them again and stared blankly at the ceiling.

As the helicopter climbed into the sky, something in Carl hollowed out completely."Naomi, come back!" he screamed, his face twisted. "You can't leave with him! You're my wife—if you need treatment, I'm the one who should be taking you! Why would you rather turn to a stranger than stay by my side?"The question was never going to get an answer. He stood there, watching the helicopter shrink into the distance, as if Naomi had vanished from his life entirely. In ten years together, this was the first time she'd ever actually left him.Carl couldn't wrap his head around it. While he stood there frozen, Susan couldn't help pushing at him."Captain, hurry up and put in my request to go home. I've only got two weeks after this infection. I don't want to die. Please, save me."Carl's eyes drifted to her face, slowly coming into focus. "I remember now. This is all because of you."Susan blinked. "What do you mean, because of me?""Captain, just call Derek already!"Instead, Carl explod

Susan's expression shifted from fury to sheer panic."Then what do I do? What happens to someone who's infected?"Carl gulped. "If it's left untreated, you'd be dead within two weeks."Panicked, Susan grabbed Carl's arm without a thought for who was watching. "Captain, I want to go home. Can you get me on another flight? Ask Derek to come pick me up right away. I don't want to die! Please, save me!"Carl didn't even spare her a glance, his eyes catching on me instead. His jaw dropped. "Naomi! What happened to you? How did you age this much in three days? Your hair's gone white!"I looked at him, almost amused. "I guess the complications must have sped things up."He froze, then reached out and grabbed a few strands of my hair. "The complications did this? Why didn't you tell me?"I laughed, louder this time. "Was it that I didn't tell you, or that you just didn't believe me?"He choked on the words, his voice shaking. "You could've told me more than once! If you'd said it again

My body felt like it had been filled with lead, too heavy to move."Don't worry," I said. "I'll think about what's best for the base."Carl nodded, satisfied. "Good." His gaze drifted to Susan, and only then did it seem to occur to him to ask, "Why are you back?"She stiffened for a beat before wrapping herself around his arm, pouting. "Can't a girl miss you halfway through a flight?"Carl glanced at me and pulled his arm away, embarrassed. "Not now. Let's be serious."Before Susan could spin another excuse, I cut in with a cold smile. "Leaving your post without authorization means ten days on mining duty underground. That's the rule. You're not planning on playing favorites again, are you? Even if I let it slide, do you think anyone else would? Do you think the Institute would?"Susan's face fell. "Why should I have to go dig in a mine? What's wrong with just not wanting to leave?"At the mention of the Institute, Carl's fingers curled. He raised his voice to stop her. "Susan,

Arthur and I exchanged a glance, and I shook my head at Carl. "Nothing important."His face darkened anyway. "Naomi, are you still upset with me over giving Susan the rotation instead of you? I already explained this—we're a team, and I have to prioritize whoever's weaker. Just hold on a little longer. I'll make sure you go next time, all right?"I stared him down. "I don't have a next time to wait for.""Still with this act," he snapped, impatient.I choked back my frustration and changed course instead. "Forget it. I won't make this difficult for you. Do whatever you want.""Really?" He studied me for a long moment, and once he was satisfied I wasn't being sarcastic, his shoulders relaxed and the smile came back. "Good, I'm glad you're not upset with me. Eat up. We'll head back to base once you're done."I'd meant to refuse, but the words changed direction on their way out, and I took the porridge from him and drank it down instead. The healthier I stayed, the better the odds f

I searched everywhere for my phone before finally grabbing it off the nightstand and scrolling through my contacts. It took a while to dig up a number I hadn't dialed in ten years, but I finally found it and called, my hands shaking with emotion."Gabe, does the offer you made me ten years ago still stand? To join your research team?" I asked the moment he picked up. "I need to get home. Can you help me?"There was a long silence on the other end, like he hadn't expected the call at all. I couldn't wait him out. "Well? Say something!"Gabe Malone led a rival research team. He was talented in his own right and came from a wealthy, well-connected family, which was exactly why he'd been assigned to stay stationed back home instead of out in the field. He'd tried to recruit me more than once, even offering a generous salary despite knowing I was Carl's wife. But back then, I'd been foolish, blinded by love, and I'd turned him down flat to follow Carl out to the Arctic instead.Ten ye

"Naomi! Naomi, what's wrong?""Wake up! Don't scare me like this!"Voices clamored around me from every direction. Irritated, I snapped, "Shut up, stop talking!" and jolted awake at the sound of my own voice.Carl, who'd been glaring daggers at me not long ago, leaned in with obvious relief. "Naomi, you're awake. You scared the hell out of me. I really thought something had happened to you."Disoriented, I glanced around the room. Arthur explained, his eyes rimmed red, "This is the hospital closest to the base. You collapsed and scared everyone, so we brought you here."I tried to speak, and my throat felt like it had been sliced with a blade. "Where's the plane?"The relief drained from Arthur's face. He held his breath and shot Carl a furious look. "It already left. With Susan on it."A wave of disappointment washed over me, tangled up with something that felt almost like resignation, like I'd known it would go this way all along. "Oh," I said flatly, and let my head drop. "
