IN MIRA'S UNIVERSE

Alexa was slowly losing it.

She had done everything, read every spell book, casted every tracking spell, yet…

She was always on edge, everyone walked on eggshells around her. It'd always been that way, but this time was heightened. An act as simple as breathing could get you executed, and your entire family too.

Alexa's powers were slowly leaving her. The more she tried to find them, the more she was drained. Everyday came with the reminder that she had to do something, but she didn't know what.

“I can't let them win.” were the only thoughts running through her head.

The wind howled outside, heavily, like it could feel the immense weight Alexa held on her shoulders.

Suddenly, she rose to her feet, her movements startling the guards around. “Strap the chariots.” She ordered.

One guard was stupid enough to speak. “Where to, Luna?”

Alexa shot him a glare, eyes glowing like the shade of blood. “Do not question me when I give a command.” The words rushed out of her mouth

“Do you know how to lie?”Mira stared blankly at Theresa. “What?”Theresa paced slowly around her, her boots silent against the damp earth.“Today,” she said, “you learn how to lie to the world.”Mira raised a brow. “Are we sure lie is the word to use?”Theresa stopped. “Illusions are lies wrapped in belief. You don’t just trick the eye, you convince reality to bend.”Mira exhaled. “Sounds... complicated.”“It is,” Theresa said. “But you’re not here for easy, are you?”Mira shook her head. “What do I do?”Theresa lifted her hand, and instantly, the field around them shifted. Trees twisted into towering statues, the sky turning violet. Mira gasped as the ground beneath her shimmered into marble.“Whoa!” She'd never get used to how quickly Theresa could bend reality.Theresa smirked. “That’s a basic illusion. Visual only. I'm not controlling weight, scent, sound or skin, just what you see.”Mira turned in a slow circle. “It feels real.”“That’s what I want you to feel.” Theresa stepped

“Do you know how to create illusions?”Mira took Theresa's hand, helping herself to rise from the dirt. She'd been lying there for approximately ten minutes, and she was surprised that Theresa let her. They'd been at it for hours, since sunrise. It was a little past noon, and Mira was exhausted.“I’ve never tried.” She responded, panting. Her legs didn't feel like hers, almost like they'd become aliens who had their own brains.Theresa nodded. “You didn't say no. I like that.”Mira stood still, chest rising and falling, unsure of what to say.Theresa looked at her, her eyes arching, then furrowing almost at the same time. “You’re exhausted. Yet, you won't say it. Why?”Mira met her eyes for the first time in hours. The sun was glistening high above them, and beads of sweat were dripping from her forehead, to her chin, to the collar of the shirt she had on. Despite that, there was a glint of determination in her eyes.“There's no room for tiredness, is there?” She replied.Theresa star

Mira instantly froze into place. “What are you doing here?” She blurted out, her voice harsher than she intended. He took one step forward, his face falling under the ray of the moonlight. Mira met his eyes, and her throat ran dry.“I just happened to be here.” He said casually.“How long have you been watching?” Mira probed further. He shrugged. “Long enough to know you've overworked yourself. You won't have any energy left for tomorrow if you keep up, and mother doesn't like excuses after giving a clear instruction.” Thane explained.Mira ran her hand through her hair, a heavy sigh escaping her throat.“Walk with me,” He said, voice softer. She glanced at him, hesitant at first, then she let her shoulders fall. “Fine!”The duo strode through the field, the distance between them light. The moon shone brightly, illuminating the path ahead of them.“So…” Thane began. “You're nocturnal or what?”Mira glanced at him. “No. I'm not nocturnal.” A chuckle escaped her lips despite herself. “I

NARRATOR'S POVTheresa stood tall in the center of the field, her silky hair catching the moonlight like a blade. Mira shifted uneasily beside her, the damp grass soaking into her boots.“First,” Theresa said, her voice sharp. “You don’t summon a portal with your hands. You summon it with your will.”Mira blinked. “My will?”“Yes. The power is yours. You control it and not the other way round. You summon a portal with your intention, your focus, your refusal to let reality stay as it is.” Theresa turned to face her fully. “Close your eyes.”Mira hesitated. Her thoughts were spiralling, her mind reeling.“Now.”She obeyed.Theresa continued. “Picture the place you want to go. Don't picture it vaguely, or like a dream or memory. I want you to picture it like you're there. Feel the air of that place, smell it, hear it. Let it consume you.”Mira inhaled slowly, trying to conjure the image of her universe, of her pack. She thought about the comfortable library she had spent a greater part

For what felt like eternity, but was actually just a minute, my heart stopped. My eyes zeroed in on Luca, standing frozen by the door, and I barely knew what to expect.Did he hear the things Theresa had said about his mother?“Hey son,” Theresa's voice broke through the silence. I turned to her, noticing that she was a bit stiff too. “Where are the rest of your friends?”She was avoiding the topic.Luca glanced at me, then back at her. “They'll be here any minute. I was already on my way here.” he said.Theresa nodded, a little too eagerly. I knew she was thinking the same thing as I was. Luca didn't hear her.Or maybe he did.“All good, then. Guess that gives you a little extra time with your girl.” She glanced at me, her eyes twinkling like they hadn't just held an unrecognizable emotion moments ago. “I’ll leave you two.”She found it easy to switch emotions, I couldn't help but wonder if that's how she actually felt everytime the look in her eyes changed.“I still need water,” I
