The figure didn’t answer, but her eyes glowed, fierce and full of sorrow.

"The book gives," she said, voice distant like a forgotten song, "but it also takes. Every power has a cost. Choose your path wisely, Mira. Not all victories come clean."

Before I could reach her, the vision shattered. I gasped, falling back into myself, the clearing around me spinning.

I was drenched in sweat. The book lay closed beside me, still glowing softly. I should have been afraid. But I wasn't. Instead, I was furious.

"If you're going to show me something, show me everything," I hissed.

I opened the book again, determination clawing through my veins. This time, it showed me how to call to the earth.

Not in words, but in feeling. My veins hummed with raw energy. I could sense the roots under the soil, the whisper of stone, the heaviness of the world waiting to answer. I stood and extended a hand, closing my eyes.

Rise.

The ground trembled slightly beneath my feet. Dirt shifted. A small rock near my boots

MIRA'S POVI opened my eyes to see Theresa staring at me, disbelief flashing through her eyes, along with shock and more fear. She wasn't the only one staring.I swallowed, although the lump in my throat wouldn't budge. I'd said it, and everyone had heard it. There was no going back now.“What did you say?” Theresa asked, her voice shaky.“I said…” I looked around, then back to the wounded man. “I can heal him.”“What makes you think that, child? We haven't had any healing…”“I know, I know. But there's very little I can't do.” Deep breath, Mira! “I’m stronger than I know.”Theresa stared at me for what felt like forever. It was obvious she was trying to make a decision. Was my uncertain declaration worth a trial? Was she ready to take that risk?Eventually, she let out a sigh. “Mira, you know how risky this is. If you fail…”I cut her short. “I won't fail.”Everyone's attention was on me now, and I wanted to run and hide, or maybe disappear into the ground. But I dared not. My battle

For the first time since Mira had shown up here, she saw the carefully mastered mask fall off Theresa's face. There was no hiding the fear that crawled its way into her eyes.“No! No, no!” She exclaimed, rushing forward. The brown envelope fell out of her hand, but she was too shaken to even notice.Mira, however, picked it up. She joined Theresa by the wounded man's side, fear already wrapping its cold hands around around her poor heart.“How did this happen?” Theresa demanded, her voice shaky with apprehension. One of the soldiers who brought him in was the one to respond. “One of the attackers kept swinging his sword blindly, like he was possessed or something. We tried to bring him down, and we did, but his sword had already stabbed one of us.”Theresa shook her head, muttering another ‘no!’. Pressing her palms over the wound, she said, “This is more than just a flesh wound.” Blood spilled out, staining her skin, but she didn't mind. “You were supposed to stay close to me.”“Why i

They didn't have to wait long. The barrier broke through, like a scissors running through a linen. The attackers stormed in, cries loud, the sound of their boots stomping the ground louder.Mira drew out her blades, her hands shaky but eyes determined. The attackers weren't shadow warriors. They were real men in mismatched armors. They weren't even many, but something about them felt… wrong.Even Theresa and Thane noticed.“They’re not shadows.” He exclaimed. “How the fuck did they break the barrier?”“We’ll figure that out later, son.” Theresa said. “Let's get this done and over with.”For a moment, Mira thought she heard relief in Theresa's voice. She too was relieved. If there was nothing hidden behind this attack, then, the chances that they would win were high. That was a good thing. She couldn't afford to lose anyone else.“You're right.” Thane said. “Let’s beat their asses.”The defenders surged forward, their own war cry echoing through the entire field. Firelit arrows flew th

We’re under attack!Mira blinked, disoriented. “What? Who?”“Don’t know yet,” Theresa snapped. “But they’re breaching the barrier is. Get up. Now!”Mira threw off the blanket, adrenaline surging. The dream still clung to her skin like sweat. She grabbed her gear, her voice hoarse. “Is it Alexa?”Theresa didn’t answer.Of course, it had to be Alexa. As Mira trotted after Alexa with heavy limbs, her heart twisted. Her mind was being plagued by a memory she thought she'd gotten over. She was starting to realize that she wasn't over a lot of things she thought she was.Breaching the barrier… The last time she'd heard those words was the day she lost the woman who'd been like a second mother to her. Also the day little Cara's life was cut short. She'd come to dread war since that day, but she could never really escape it, could she? She had lost everything. It scared the shit out of her that maybe history was about to repeat itself.Outside, the sound of explosions echoed through the valle

Being rejected by a mate sucks, but the thing is, Thane never really did reject me. While I was utterly heartbroken, I didn't feel the pain that comes from a severed bond. But even that hurts in a way. I didn't lose him, but I couldn't have him either. He let me go, and we've been worlds apart. I hated to admit it, and I'd tried to bury it as deep as I could, but the bond between Thane and I is actually still there.I glanced at alternate Thane beside me. Our eyes met, and all of my senses were instantly clouded by memories of him.His eyes… his scent… his hair… his body… oh Moon! This isn't good.I swallowed, a huge lump forming in my throat that made breathing hard to do. “What… what do you mean manipulated?”“Alexa has the power to enter one's mind and make you do things you don't want to do. While that doesn't justify what I did, or what he did, the problem wasn't us. It was her.” Thane explained. My breath caught in my throat, a tight knot curling in the deepest parts of my stoma

A knot in my stomach tightened out of nowhere. I'd heard those words too many times, and I hated the way it made me feel.Thane's eyes met mine, slight regret flashing through his eyes from his words.“I just mean I don't like the energy he carries. Not him in person. I don't even know him. I bet he's a nice guy.” He explained.“He is.” I concurred.Thane nodded. “Thought so. I meant no harm with my words, Mira.”But I knew he meant more than what he was saying. I didn't want to probe further. This topic of Luca made me furious and heartbroken all at once. I trusted him, more than I cared to admit, and that scared the shit out of me.“So you're not going to ask what our unfinished business is?” Thane's voice broke through my thoughts.I buried the questions swirling in my head at the back at my mind, and decided to focus on the man in front of me. He was a good distraction.“I was going to ask eventually.” I said. “What is it?”He smiled, a glint of mischief flashing through his eyes
