Pushing Him Too Far

The silence that followed was deafening.

Those dark, impenetrable eyes bored into mine, but this time, I refused to look away. My hand trembled where it hung in the air, palm open, demanding the proof of everything he claimed me to be.

“Certificate,” I repeated, my voice steadier, sharper. “Show it to me.”

His jaw ticked once, twice. For a moment, I thought he would reach into his discarded jacket on the chair, pull it out, and finally silence the storm inside me. But he didn’t move.

He sat on his knees, his fists clenching at his sides as though I had asked him for something more impossible than the moon.

My heart dropped. “You can’t, can you?” The whisper escaped before I could stop it. “Because it doesn’t exist.”

His silence was my answer.

A cold laugh bubbled up from somewhere deep in me, sharp and hollow. “Unbelievable. Just when I thought I could trust you, that you're different, you do this?”
