Matthias' POV

I started the conversation.

"Explain how rogues could have appeared in your pack.”

One of the maids brought in some tea. I didn't take it, not because I didn't welcome it, I simply wasn't thirsty at the moment.

Silas was the one that spoke.

“For the past six months, we have been investigating this, Crane. But unfortunately we have made little headway. You see, the reason we sought an alliance with you is because we have been targeted from the beginning.”

My brows furrowed but I di

Matthias' POVThe discussions lasted until dawn broke.Charles had left halfway to handle several matters. As I stood to leave, Silas escorted me to the gates, where Kael waited with a car, having sent off the rest of our guards to handle matters.“You know,” Silas muttered. “I feel that I am getting too old for this. I had hoped to wait until things were more stable before handing over.”It wasn't difficult to hear the despair in his voice.“Silas,” I said with a sigh. “Have you gotten yourself checked medically?”My question was not sudden. In fact I had waited until only he and I were in earshot (minus Kael, who I trusted), before I asked.Silas paused, tuning to me.His smile was saddened.“I am not sick, Matthias. I am merely old.”“You were a warrior, Silas,” I cut him off. “You are one of the reasons that the outskirts of the city are as safe as they are now. Back when everything was in chaos, though we have not fought side by side, I am aware of your singular strength and w

I caught it, and began to untie the string that bound them together, while listening. “They are anonymous, handwritten, and aimed at causing trouble for us. We assumed they were simply pranks at first. But things began to escalate over a month ago. Several of our guards reported sightings at our border gates, and several more

“That is already being handled,” I stated, signalling for silence while also recalling that this very same person speaking up, had, upon seeing the number of guards I took with me, muttered under his breath that we were small in number.I didn't need to explain, I only needed to win.I split them up into three groups: one with me through the forest.I took the lead, and cut through the forest like a knife, each step accompanied by speed and stealth. It was the shortest path to the group of rogues that surrounded the Greyhound pack.I caught the first one. Without even giving him a chance to raise an alarm, I silenced him with a swipe of my hands, which had half-shifted into claws that would easily slice through flesh. The more we took down and the closer we got to the center of the pack, the louder the sounds of whimpering and low, threatening growls got.By the time we had taken down the fifth rogue on our end, the second and third groups emerged. Each had been sent to fight their

Matthias’ POVFucking hell, this was a disaster.Dominic’s home was currently filled with overheard discussions, the sounds of sobbing and it gave me a damn headache.A growl left my lips and I longed for a run through the forest. But I also felt the exhaustion of the day, from the activities all morning to the uproariously exciting engagement banquet tonight.Kael walked a step behind me as I left the house. He was truly foolish, I thought, pressing two fingers to my temple and massaging it while we walked.“What’s the status of the party crasher?” I asked.Kael began to give a report, succinct and collected, “He is currently still in custody. I have ordered a full-scale investigation to verify his identity.” He paused then added, “I do however think it will not yield any further information we don’t already know.”I understood, and I also agreed. For that man to come to the party was one thing, but if he didn’t have enough evidence or didn't stand on the moral high ground, he would

Dominic tried to speak, “Father, this concerns the reputation of our family. If we do not-” “You mean, it concerns YOUR reputation, Dominic.” Matthias cut his son short. “You made your decision, and I have not pushed back on it. You and Vivienne Ashford will get married. There is no turning back. But asking Keira to take the blame and try to brush things aside is not an option. You will not dare bring her into this.” Dominic’s lips curled, and I could see it, the bitterness.Vivienne let out a broken, harsh sound, and was about to press the knife to her throat again when suddenly, someone moved past in a flash. The knife clattered to the ground, and two guards held onto Vivienne who began to wail louder. Cordelia panicked. She turned to me and knelt, KNELT, clasping her hands together. It was a trembling show of piety, of penance and of pleading. Something I had never expected, but was wholly unsurprised at. Cordelia knew how to put

Keira’s POV The fun was over. I leaned closer to his side, my hand curling over his large bicep. “So, what did you think?” I asked, my tone a little teasing. But he didn't respond. In fact he seemed to not hear me at all, as if I had been just air. The silence stretched for five more seconds before I felt a lump in my throat. So he WAS angry. From my vantage point I could see the guests slowly exiting the hall, a few only left, discussing the events of tonight Ike they were entertainment and not the wreckages of someone's life. I felt a stirring of guilt, just a little. Had I really gone too far, after all? Just when I thought nothing else would happen, I heard frantic, fast footsteps bounding towards us. “Alpha,” a man in a suit rushed to us. He bowed, stopping just short of Matthias. The man looked familiar; was he not one of Dominic's aides? “Alpha, something’s happening. Please Master Dominic demands your presence.” The man gasped, keeping his head bowed. Thank the G
